“Owen’s getting the equipment ready.” Rose said walking into Jack’s office. She looked around before walking up to Jack.
“So you think you can just go for a wonder in my office?” Jack watched as Rose touched the lamp making it brighter.
“Why have you got bricks missing from your wall?” Rose asked nodding to the black hole behind Jack.
“It’s not some exciting story. An alien shot at it.” Jack returned to the pile of paperwork on his desk.
Rose looked unimpressed, “Not replacing the bricks?”
“Why are we talking about bricks, Rose?”
“I, er,” Rose shifted on her feet, “I don’t want to go through with this.”
“We have no choice.”
“Really? You don’t think there are any good aliens out there?” Rose shifted her balance again.
“Rose, I’m not doing this to get rid of the alien, I’m doing it to save you.”
“Right.”
Jack looked up from his paperwork and pushed back in his chair.
“You really think this is easy for me? I know the risks Rose, I know what can happen. But I also know what could happen if the fog is left in you.”
“Nothing has happened!” Rose moved further forwards to the desk, looking down at Jack.
“Maybe you don’t realise this, but those blank moments that you have, that’s the fog. And that fog has been saying things you don’t know about.”
“What? I haven’t had any blank moments.”
“Ok, let’s go back a bit, Ianto, the archives, what were you talking about?”
“Nothing, we just sat there, he told you he’d found me and we waited for you. We shared a few words; he seemed upset so I gave him a hug. Was that the fog? What did it say to Ianto?”
“How long do you think you were waiting for me?” Jack questioned, ignoring Rose’s puzzled look.
“A few minutes, not long.”
“Wrong, it was at least quarter of an hour.”
“What?” Rose sat down in the chair opposite and rested her arms on Jack’s desk.
“What about at the coffee machine?”
“I watched him make the coffee, he finished it then went into here.”
“Wrong again. Rose, this fog has been saying things to people. You remember at the time and a few minutes after but the fog hides the memories, changes them. Makes you think that there is nothing wrong.”
“I don’t understand, the fog said it wouldn’t do anything to hurt anyone. Oh God, what has it been saying?”
“I don’t think I should tell you that.” Jack gave a small smile before looking back at his paperwork, shuffling forwards in his chair.
“Understandable.” Rose nodded slightly. “But I really think you should tell me.”
Jack looked up, “Rose?”
“Ianto is damaged, Jack. I’m trying to fix him, don’t you think he needs help?”
“I am helping him.” Jack snapped.
“Yeah? By forcing yourself on him? He doesn’t know what to think. You or Lisa, he doesn’t know. He thinks he loves you, Jack.” Rose smiled.
