By the time that his co-workers finally appeared, Kai was running late. He stared at the clock, nervously drumming on the counter.

“Are you okay?” D’Marcus asked, sweeping the place up one more time before he headed out. He thought about going home but since Kai was the only person working there until the others showed up, he decided to stay and keep him company.  Besides, he didn’t have anything to do.

“Finally!” Kai said as they walked in. The two brothers Akio and Hajime Yamada, strolled in laughing amongst themselves. The Yamada brothers to say the least, were attached at the hip and inseparable at all times. It wouldn’t have been a problem in fact, it would have been endearing if the two of them weren’t impish trouble makers. They were the prankster types, the ones that got cheap laughs over making a poor unexpecting soul irritated-well, not all of it was unexpected. Anyone who worked at the Moon Lady knew the two boys and what they considered to be a good time.

Akio the older of the two brothers was small, wiry and extremely buff. He had only 2% body fat to his name and his iron arms were littered with tattoos of American pinup girls and half-naked geishas. He had a puglike face that only a mother could love-that or a drunken barmaid and he walked around at all times with a smirk that suggested, that somewhere, someplace some poor fuck had stepped into some ridiculous trap he had constructed. One got the impression that at 5 years old, he got kicks by sticking whoopee cushions on old ladies’ chairs.

Hajime, the younger brother was taller and rounder. What Akio didn’t have in fat, his brother made up for. He had a long rectangle face, rounded off at the edges and an expression of stupefaction. He seemed to be doped up on something at all times. He wasn’t the brightest tool in the shed but he was certainly enthusiastic. He followed his older brother’s plans with gusto certain that no matter what they were, they would be funny in the end.

Kai seeing them walk in felt an overwhelming feeling of happiness that finally he was going to be able to go to band practice and at the same time, he was pissed that they were late. He wanted to ring both of their necks but realizing that he was supposed to be a nice guy here-he wanted very much to impress the Hiranos and that killing them only meant more time wasted, he reasoned against it.

“Alright,” he said. “I have to go. I’m already 40 minutes late.”

“Hey,” D’Marcus cut in.

“Who is this guy?” Akio asked, pointing obnoxiously to the tall foreigner.

“This is D’Marcus. He just got hired today,” Kai said quickly and even more rapidly introduced the brothers.

“Nice to meet you,” D said bowing politely. The Yamadas however returned his kind manner with smug, amused expressions. Evil plans devised themselves in their thick skulls. “Um… I have a car,” he said turning to Kai. “If you need a ride.”

Kai didn’t quite understand him at first.

“If you need a ride to your band mate’s house,” D added.

“OH!” Kai smiled. “That would be great!”

“Alright,” he handed Akio the broom and smiling at him, nodded at Kai telling him that he was completely ready to go. “Goodbye,” he said to the brothers. Again, they didn’t reply.

“Don’t worry about them,” Kai said. “Let’s go.”

Walking out into the cold night, Kai wrapping his arms tightly around himself said “Don’t befriend those two. They are pranksters.”

“Pranksters?” D’Marcus walked up to his car and unlocked the doors. “You can go in,” D said to him.

Quickly, Kai slipped in. Sitting in the car, he still trembled from the aftereffects of the cold.

D’Marcus sitting in the driver’s seat, put the key in the ignition. “I’ll keep mind to stay away from them. So where at?”

With arms still wrapped tightly around him, Kai told him the address. Seeing the look of confusion on D’s face, he gave him instructions on how to get there.

“Oh….okay,” D nodded and started driving. “Are you cold?” he asked, quickly looking over at him.

“Yeah…I wish it would get warmer out.”

D reached over and turned the heat on. Kai cutely scooted forward and lifting his hands up hovered over the heating fan as if he were near a fire. “Colddddddd” he said.

“Here,” D stopping at a red light, reached over into the backseat and grabbing a large, thick black sweater handing it to Kai. “You’ll be really cold when you go home tonight,” he said, with his eyes glued on the road.

“Thank you,” Kai smiled and bowing several times with the sweater in his hands, slipped into it. On him, the sweater was humongous. It draped over his skinny form. Bawling up the excess sleeves in his hands, he folded his arms and tapped his foot. “So, D….” he said, trying to make conversation. “Oh, take a right here!” he suddenly shouted, realizing where he was. Once D did so he said “So, tell me about yourself.”

With a shrug, he answered: “I study architecture.”

“Why?”

“I like buildings.”

“Why?”

“Cause they are interesting.”

“Why?” Kai giggled.

“Honestly?”

“Honestly.”

“Um…” D sighed. “Form and Function,” he nodded.

“Huh?”

“They have form-you know they have an appearance. They are beautiful.”

“You like that word,” Kai cut in.

“Huh?”

“Beautiful. You like that word. You use it a lot.”

“Is that a bad thing?” D smiled handsomely, revealing his perfect white teeth.

“As long as you mean it when you say it then,” Kai pausing for effect added quickly and cutely “it’s not bad” with a shake of his head.

“Well,” he replied and looking at him nodded slowly “I mean it.”

“Function because people use them, right?” Kai said getting back to the question.

“Yes. And I don’t know. There is something else about architecture. I think it’s the size you know. There is something intimidating about them.”

“So, architecture is like D then?” Kai joked. The way he was talking about it was reminiscent of what they were talking about earlier.

“Except for the beautiful part,” D laughed.

“Hey! Are you fishing for compliments?!”

D rolled his eyes and smiling added “Well, buildings feel like people so…” he shrugged. “I’m bad at explaining things in Japanese.”

“So why Japanese architecture? Isn’t that what you are studying?”

“I like it because it has its own mindset. You know, ideas? Ways of looking and doing that I wouldn’t think of. So, I guess I like it because it challenges me,” he bit his lip. “Sounds stupid like that, right?” he asked, not completely sure.

“No, not at all,” Kai smiled. “Makes sense…”

“Left here?”

“Mhm.”

The two sat there quiet, thinking about what D said, about changing the way you see things. Kai looked out the window and examined the buildings they passed, really looking at them like he never did before, noticing the shape of the windows, the tips of the ceilings. He had the strange impression that he never even realized before where he was. He just went about his day going to one place to the next on a preordained string, looking at the ground as he walked, blindly moving to the next action. But he never realized where he was. And suddenly all the buildings that would just fly by in a smudge and haze became alive almost, they stood tall above him.

He wondered if places could have memories. If walls, if mortar or brick or paint could have memories. For some reason, he remembered sitting with Ruki looking out at the forest. He said something…something about the forest being alive.

“I can’t unsee it now,” he said with a laugh.

“Huh?”

“I can’t unsee…” Kai laughed. “I mean…um…I mean the buildings. I just ignored them before but you are right. They do feel like people, in a way.”

D smiled at him. “I think we are here,” he said softly, his hollow voice low.

Kai sighing said “Thank you.”

“No problem,’ D replied in English.

“Hey!” Kai suddenly chirped. “Do you hit on girls in English?”

“American girls.”

“Not Japanese.”

“Why? I don’t seem foreign enough?” he laughed.

“ No, girls like it. They think it’s….sexy.”

“English?”

“Yeah,” Kai giggled.

“Should I talk to you in English?” D teased.

Kai slapping his arm playfully, whined “Heyyyyyy with a laugh. “I better get going. I’ll see you later D.” He slipped out of the car quickly.

“Goodbye,” D said in English.

Kai waving goodbye, raised his hands in the air and opening and closing them, turned away with smile.

Uruha began the opening riff of Kurenai, playing it melodically and slowly and as the notes came gently from his guitar, Aoi walked on stage. Several fans who knew who he was cheered, some merely excited by the occasion of a guest musician joined. He smiled and waved to them, acknowledging their applause as if he was a well known star.

The singer, a guy Aoi had never seen before started singing out the lyrics. His voice was rather generic. It would be a bit much to expect him to sing like Toshi.  To his own credit, he at least knew in what key to sing in.

Aoi walked up to the edge of the stage and blowing a kiss a girl, winked and held his guitar ready to play. When it came time for the rest of the band to join Uruha, the crowd tensed up with anticipation. Throwing his head back and forth playfully, Aoi joined in. Uruha hearing his guitar looked up at him and smiled widely. He was too busy concentrating on his guitar to notice him walk on but hearing the notes screaming out of Aoi’s with enthusiasm, a great wave of joy and excitement flooded Uruha.

Aoi danced playfully to the drum beat, playing up to the crowd. Those who had never seen him before, quickly gave their attention to him. He was by far the most interesting performer on stage. Uruha for all his skill and talent, looked rather awkward up there, hunched over and playing his notes diligently, nodding occasionally. Aoi however had a theatrical quality to him and the fans ate it up. The love though was reciprocal. The more they reached out to him and cheered him on, the more playful and extravagant he became, smirking and winking at them, running to the edges of the small stage.

Aoi started singing along, urging the fans to join in some of which did and started singing the well known song out with all their hearts. When it came time for the guitar solos, Uruha with an amazing skill lead into it. Aoi running up to stand beside him, played the second section of the solo with him in unison. Uruha watching his hands looked up and smiled at him with his cute baby smile.  Aoi radiating with happiness, leaned in and to the delight of the crowd, pecked him on the lips. Before Uruha could even realize what happened, Aoi had already ran over to the right side of the stage and started playing to the fans. Wanting to follow him but knowing how these things worked, Uruha rushed over to the left and started playing.

After several seconds, the two guitarists turned to go back to their side. In the middle, Uruha taking advantage of the situation leaned toward Aoi as they crossed paths and pursed out his lips, indicating to him that he wanted another kiss. The crowd, thrilled cheered insanely loud.

Of course, if the fans wanted it, Aoi was going to give it. At that moment, their pasts didn’t matter. At that moment, the future didn’t matter. There was nothing grave, nothing sad, nothing lost, nothing at risk. He was in Euphoria, basking in the glowing love of the crowd. With a charming smile, he grabbed Uruha’s chin and pecked him cleanly on the lips and like a tease, ran over to the left side of the stage to get ready for the last section of the song, when all the instruments in unison rushed to the end with strength.

Uruha giddy, almost forgot what was supposed to happen next. If he didn’t see Aoi stand there and sink his feet into the ground as if they were getting ready for takeoff, he would have played the wrong thing. He rushed over to the right side of the stage. Concentrate, he told himself as both of them, playing in sync reached the end.

The crowd cheered, clapped and screamed madly. Musically, it was hard to really tell if the cover was good or not but it sure as hell was a good show. They weren’t expecting much and what was given to them was more than they thought. The singer turning to Aoi wanted to introduce him but not knowing his name, quickly glanced at Uruha.

Shyly, Uruha moved toward the microphone and said in a weak and almost inaudible voice “Aoi,” and gestured to him. Blushing, he looked away causing everyone-including Aoi to laugh. Aoi moving over to the microphone that was still in the vocalist’s hand, said in a mock announcer voice “Uruha,” and gestured to him. All the girls in the crowd let out at various volumes and pitches “Awww”s and “aren’t they cute”s. The singer feeling a bit awkward, held the microphone at a distance from himself as Aoi leaning into it, added “The Skilled Ducky.” Of course, that sent ripples of giggling throughout the crowd. “Kawaiiiiii!” someone screamed and Uruha in his embarrassment lifted his hand and covered his blushing face.

He was overwhelmed. Not only with being the center of attention in front of a live crowd but with Aoi who not only kissed him twice but called him Ducky of all things. The way too in which he moved on stage and smiled and dance, the way in which he was looking at him now, grinning out of sheer joy and adrenaline, Uruha felt that he was almost just like the Aoi he used to know, full of life and spontaneous.

“We are La+Rougedeath,” the singer said and lifted his hands in the air, getting things moving. Everyone on stage bowed. Aoi being the most dramatic blew several kisses at the crowd before walking backstage.
