I have nothing in particular against the city of Boston, but their professional sports franchises winning everything is getting old. They now have won three Superbowls, two World Serieses and an NBA championship in the past seven years. That's better than most metropolitan areas do in a century.

I learned that Barack Obama's great grandfather was named Ralph Waldo Emerson Dunham. How great is that? It's funny how "American" his biography is considering that his detractors try to paint him as an unpatriotic, exotic outsider. It's just that he's American in such a non-apple-pie vein. And I guess that's foreign enough.

California's political schizophrenia can be quite frustrating. It's reputation as a bastion of liberalism obscures the true nature of the state's political temperament.
