Chapter 4:
“Yo!”
“Hey, Aiba-chan! Nice to see you visiting me finally!” Nino said pouting at his best friend.
“Gomen” Aiba grinned at the hospitalized boy sheepishly. “But I bought you flowers…” he said holding out the bouquet in his hands toward Nino.
“And what should I do with a bunch of weed?” the other boy kept complaining though he was happy actually.
“I knew you’ll say that…” Aiba said grinning. “That’s why I brought this too..! Jyaaan!”
“The new Mario Kart!” Nino squealed delighted. “You’re forgiven” he said grinning when he got the game in his greedy paws.
Aiba just laughed at him and while Nino was busy with his present he climbed and made himself snug at the end of Nino’s hospital bed. Nino put away his present on the bedside table a few minutes later and looked at his visitor.
“So, did you choose your dancers already?” he asked grinning.
The smile faded on Aiba’s lips at the question.
“They did, yesterday. Ossan chose Osaka Stadium for the concert so we’ll leave at the end of the week to start location check, rehearsals and promotion…” Aiba said with the hints of anger and disgust in his voice.
“Hey, what’s wrong? It’s your debut concert! Don’t you want it?” Nino asked gently.
“No!” Aiba snapped at Nino obvious anger burning in his other way soft brown eyes, scaring Nino. “Gomen…” he whispered lowering his head when he saw Nino’s frightened face. “It’s just… when I thought you’ll be there too I thought… it might not be that bad…” Aiba admitted embarrassed.
“Masaki… Exams are coming up, I have to study…” Nino started automatically - which wasn’t unexpected after all those voice messages from his uncle - but when he caught Aiba almost breaking down crying. “But there’s no way I’d miss your debut concert! I’m your no. 1. fan after all!” he finished smiling at his friend reaching out his uninjured hand to take Aiba’s.
“Usotsuki!” Aiba pouted at him but Nino could see the happy sparks in the other boy’s eyes.
“Okay, maybe not yet… But I will! As soon as I was discharged from this prison called hospital” Nino said grumpy and pouted.
He reached his purpose cause Aiba laughed happily at him.
“And I want to hear you playing the saxophone too!” Nino added grinning.
Aiba’s eyes widened at the mention of saxophone.
“Yabai! I forgot!”
“You forgot what?” Nino asked frowning.
“I have a rehearsal. Saxophone…” Aiba said with panic painted all over his face.
“Then what are you still doing here? Go!” Nino said practically kicking Aiba off of his bed. “Hayaku! I won’t forgive you if you give a shitty performance at the concert” Nino said pouting angrily and tried to fold his arms over his chest but that was almost impossible with the cast on his left arm.
“Haaii! Dai ichi fan-san!” Aiba mock-saluted to Nino before run out of the room…
Sighing Nino leant back to the pillows. He wished Aiba would’ve stayed with him. It was boring to stay in the same room, lying in the same bed for three consecutive days. Alone. And he couldn’t even play his DS with his broken wrist. Also he had no visitors so far just Aiba today…
Two more days before he could go home…
“And my head’s killing me…” he muttered pouting and with closed eyes he rubbed his temple hoping that will ease the pain there. “Kaeritai…”
“Nino-kun?”
Nino’s thoughts and silent agonizing was bothered by the all too familiar voice ringing from the doorway. The boy looked up almost shocked at his visitor, his hand falling back to his lap.
“Oh…chan…” he whispered not believing the sight in front of him.
“Are you feeling well? Should I call for the doctor?” the dance instructor asked concerned, misunderstanding the boy’s pale face and weak voice.
“No! I’m… fine just… headache…” Nino waved his hand.
Now that Ohno was here he couldn’t care less about the pounding in his temple. He didn’t want Ohno to leave. Not even for calling a doctor or nurse to get him painkillers.
“Are you sure?” Ohno asked still obviously worried and sneaked closer to the boy.
“Yeah… but… can you… stay with me?... Just a little…” he asked and wanted to kick himself hard for sounding so weak even to his own ears.
The soft smile - that Nino loved so much - appeared on Ohno’s lips at the boy’s request. He pulled a chair to the bed and just like the day when Nino got injured he took the boy’s right hand into his.
“I was worried about you, Nino-kun” Ohno confessed with smiling softly yet slightly sheepishly.
“Really? You did?” Nino asked with hopeful sparks in his eyes before he could stop himself from doing so.
“Of course I did! I’m worried about your future carrier!” the dance instructor said seriously.
‘There it goes again…’ Nino held back his sigh but leant back to his pillows with closed eyes, slowly pulling his hand away from Ohno’s with the movement. Ohno’s eyes widened and looked at the boy almost hurt at the loss of the body contact. But Nino didn’t see it. He turned his head away from the older man.
He should’ve known after all these months. Why does he even bother to build up his hope every time he meets Ohno? He should know that Ohno cares for him only as he cared for any other of his juniors. He should’ve known that he’s nothing special to Ohno…
“What’s wrong, Nino-kun? Are you heart somewhere?” Ohno asked concern coloring his voice.
“Betsuni” Nino shrugged and rolling on his side he turned his back to the dance instructor. “Would you be nice enough to leave me alone? Doctor said I have to rest a lot. I wanna sleep” Nino said on a flat tone that sounded anything but sleepy or tired, rather hurt…
Ohno blinked at the boy who held his casted arm close to his chest, curling up in a ball around it as if he’d try to protect himself form something. Or was that somebody? The dance instructor couldn’t help but feel hurt over being ignored by Nino - again. He was obviously doing something very, very wrong if he got this reaction from him. But why? Wasn’t he paying enough attention to him? Didn’t he spend enough time with him while he helped him with his dancing? Didn’t he show how much he cared for him? More than any other junior…
Was that not enough?
Or maybe that was too much…
Ohno had no idea at all and Nino was obviously not in the mood to enlighten him either.
The dance instructor sighed and did as he was told. Left…
It took Ohno 30 minutes to get back to the jimusho.
Jun was at his side as soon as he stepped through the glass doors. It was obvious that the stylist was waiting for him more than impatiently.
“Where the Hell were you? The meeting starts in 5!” he attacked the dance instructor, anger and worry mixed in his eyes. “And why didn’t you answer your damn phone?”
“Gomen” Ohno mumbled simply; his mind still occupied with Nino.
“What’s wrong? Something happened?” he asked as worry washed away the last traced of his anger.
“Uh-huh…” Ohno hummed but Jun highly doubted that he even heard what he was asking.
“Okay, Satoshi-kun, listen to me!” Jun stopped the older man and putting his hand on his shoulder made Ohno to face him. “It’s obvious that something’s bothering you but you to focus now! Okay? You don’t need to enrage Johnny-san” the stylist said looking at Ohno sternly. “We’ll go out later ad talk about whatever your problem is… Okay?”
“Okay…” Ohno mumbled nodding.
Jun was right. He had to focus on his job, on Aiba’s debut concert now. He nodded his head once more for determination before headed toward the meeting room…
“So, care to tell me finally, what’s wrong with you? I doubt I ever saw you this bothered…” ‘or bothered at all…’ Jun added in his thoughts.
They were sitting in the private room of a nearby restaurant and stylist was staring at Ohno with serious eyes. Ohno didn’t want to answer at first so he just kept his gaze on his beer glass so he won’t have to look at Jun in the eye.
But Jun wasn’t known about giving up things that easily. He was determined to know what was bothering his friend and help him if that was possible for him.
“I think… I might have fallen in love with someone…” Ohno mumbled finally after what seemed an eternity of silence, but his gaze still was fixed on his glass.
“People usually know that…” Jun said with tiny hints of sarcasm in his voice.
Ohno said nothing which earned a sigh on Jun’s behalf.
“It’s that boy, right? The one that got injured the other day…” Jun stated instead of asking.
Ohno’s head shot up and looked at the stylist with wide eyes.
“How do you… know it?” he asked stuttering and faint blush rushed to his cheeks.
Jun frowned irritated. People at the jimusho used to think he was some kind of caveman just because his work place was located in the basement and he was there most of the time doing his job! So in their eyes it was impossible for him to be up-to-date on gossips and happenings… This was what pissed Jun off a lot. He knew all the important things around the jimusho, thank you very much!
Though in Ohno’s case, it was slightly different. He had the heart of an artist so most of the time he was oblivious to the people around him. Including what they might think about him…
Jun sighed.
“How would I not know?” he asked back. “You skipped 4 hours of work the other day just because of him!” the stylist said and sounded really, really annoyed.
“So what if I did?” Ohno snapped back which was unusual if it was him.
“What if you did?” Jun repeated his words not believing his ears. “How about you might get fired because of this?”
“I don’t care…” Ohno mumbled shrugging as he sank back into his sulky mode.
“Or did you think about that you’re ten years older? That’s just a boy, a kid! What would you do if it leaks? You can end up in jail!” Jun continued mercilessly.
“You think I don’t know these?” Ohno’s head shot up once more and stared at his colleague with the hints of anger in his eyes. “Well, for your information, I’m well aware of all those things, thank you very much! How can you think that I’d do anything to him? With all the possibilities, his future just awaits him to become anyone he wanna be, you think I’d do anything to ruin those to him?” Ohno asked insulted. “But I’m sorry for not being able to change these feelings…, not being able to just… throwing them away!”
Jun was truly taken aback by Ohno’s little speech. Not that he’d ever thought that his friend would be a pervert or something, but still he thought he was just lusting after that boy. This wouldn’t be that surprising. All of these boys’ were accepted in to be trained being an eye-candy; to be sold by sweating out sex! And one or two of them were naturals…
Yet Jun had to admit that he was wrong. Ohno wasn’t simply lusting after this boy, oh no, he was truly in love with him; head over hills; when the other’s happiness was the first and last thing in one’s mind…
“Then you know you can’t let this happen…” Jun said softly this time.
“I know…”
Nino had no more visitors till he was discharged after five days in the hospital. He couldn’t say he was surprised by this. Aiba was probably busy with all his rehearsals just as Ohno might be. Also, he highly doubted that the dance instructor would come again after how he treated him the other day. As much as it broke his heart he knew he couldn’t blame anyone just himself…
Oh the day of his discharge Aiba sent him a message that they were heading to Osaka for the concert preparations. Nino smiled softly when he read the text and promised him once more in his answer that he’ll be there with him in time so he won’t have to do it all alone…
The next few weeks Nino spent all his time with studying. Or he tried so. Exams were coming just as he told to Aiba but every time he wanted to focus on the textbooks his attention got distracted. Usually by Aiba and his text of complains about anything and everything. In the remaining time, his own mind distracted him from studying cause Ohno’s face sneaked into his thoughts and he caught himself from time to time that he was thinking about what the dance instructor would do just then…
So he escaped to his last resort and instead of studying he played with his video games all day to keep his mind occupied and he didn’t even cared that smashing the buttons for hours made his still casted wrist ache cause the flashing lights of the TV screen made his head pounding till his mind was too numb to even think and when he just fainted into bed in the middle of the night and fell into dreamless sleep…
“You’re here finally!”
Relief was obvious all over Aiba’s face when he found Nino on the doorstep of his hotel room. He immediately pulled the shorter boy into a tight hug to show Nino how happy he was to see him.
“Okay, okay! You can let go of me, Aiba-chan, I won’t run away!” Nino said laughing into Aiba’s chest as he returned the hug.
“Don’t wanna” Aiba protested pouting. “I missed Nino-chan…”
“I missed you too but actually you’re crashing my hand between us and it hurts…” Nino told him which caused Aiba to let go of him and jump back.
“Gomen”
“It’s okay, you couldn’t know” Nino brushed it off shrugging and walked inside Aiba’s room. “So, everything’s ready for tomorrow?” he asked his friend grinning as he dropped himself onto Aiba’s bed.
“They say so…” Aiba said shrugging as he sat down next to Nino.
It was obvious that he wasn’t interested in the whole debut thing and Nino wondered for the nth time why Aiba was still doing as he was told to? But anytime Nino asked Aiba about it the boy pretended he didn’t hear him or simply started to talk about something completely different stuff.
“All right, I say it as your no. 1 fan, so listen to me! It’ll be your big day tomorrow so go, shower up then sleep!” Nino ordered as a general, pointing at the bathroom door then back to the bed where they were sitting.
“Aye, aye, sir!” Aiba saluted grinning back before headed to the bathroom. “You’ll be here still when I’m finished, right?” he asked turning back with the hints of anxiety in his soft brown eyes.
“Of course I will!”
“And you’ll stay for the night too, right?” Aiba asked again.
“You can bet on that! At least I don’t have to spend money on accommodation” Nino answered grinning.
The soon-to-be idol sighed relieved and entered the bathroom…
Later when both boys were lying on their back in the bed, Nino could see from the corner of his eyes that Aiba was fidgeting the bed sheets with his fingers anxiously. A soft smile appeared on the skinny boy’s lips. It seemed like Aiba did care about the next day after all…
Nino probed himself on his uninjured arm and hovered above Aiba.
“Masaki, don’t worry! You’ll be great! They’ll love you! I promise! And I’ll be in the backstage during the whole time…”
Aiba smiled up at him gratefully and let Nino’s soft caresses in his hair lull him into peaceful sleep.
“You’ll overawe then, big boy…” Nino whispered smiling and kissed Aiba’s nose lightly…
