Aoi's POV
~~~
Riding along, I decide to quiz our newest arrival.
"So, you work with magic?" I say to get his attention.
"You could say that," he smiles, finally looking my way.
"Well, what would YOU say?" I push.
"I'd say I supervise others who use magic."
"So you really do supervise fairy god people?" Kai asks, eyes wide.
I try not to laugh.
My brother can be a bit naive sometimes.
"Yeah, I do. What do you do?" Miyavi asks back.
"We..ah..don't really have jobs."
Kai looks at me for help.
"We're just a couple of lazy bums," I offer along with a cheeky grin.
"That sounds like fun. Wanna teach me how to be lazy?" Miyavi asks, causing Kai to blush.
Well, that explains why he was being so helpful with splitting us up.
I think he likes my brother.
"Actually, Kai's not lazy at all." I tell him. "He cooks, cleans, takes care of his useless little brother."
"The last being you, I take it." Miyavi smiles back at me.
"Most of the time."
After the laughter dies down, Miyavi turns back to me.
Eyes narrowed, he says, "Ya know, there's talk around the guild of some 'renegade' princes. A couple of brothers in line for their uncle's thrown. You wouldn't know anything about that, would you?"
"Are you saying I look like a prince?" I toss back at him.
Hoping he denies it.
"Actually, you both seem a little too sure of yourselves to be the bums you claim. And then there's your manners. And your clothes."
"What can I say, Kai takes care of all that."
"Explain the manners, then."
And I'm surprised the other man won't let it rest.
"Why the interest?" I counter.
He shrugs, "Just that it'd be a feather in someone's cap if they were to find these two. That's all."
"You mean, like some kind of bonus?"
"More like being owed a huge-ass favor," Miyavi smiles back at me.
"What's the big deal about finding these guys anyway?" Kai asks, not looking at either of us.
"Well, for starters there's a shortage of princes. Especially good ones. I said these two were in line for a throne. That's a big deal right there."
"But surely they weren't the only ones in line? What about the others?"
"Other. Only one. And he's anything but good. There was a bit of a scandal before these two left. It's been mostly sorted out, tho."
"Yeah?" I ask, really curious.
Maybe our cousin got what he deserves.
But if that was the case, then there should've been a major search for us.
We'd have heard something, even as cut off as we were living.
"Well, as far as the guild is concerned. We know the truth, even if no one else does."
"Thes two guys left after a scandal, huh?" I try to seem only mildly interested.
"Yeah. There was a 'mysterious' fire that ended in someone's death. But these two didn't have anything to do with it. Did you?"
"Us? Are you kidding?" Kai laughs, and it sounds forced even to me.
"Yeah. You two ARE the missing princes, aren't you?"
"You're just guessing. There's no proof," Kai finally looks at him.
But Miyavi only smiles.
"Looks like the cat's out of the bag," I say, smiling at my brother.
We find ourself at the gates of a fine manor right before dusk.
"Do you suppose this is the one?" Miyavi asks, turning to us.
"Only one way to find out," I say, dismounting.
I approach the gate, looking around for some kind of call-button.
Finding nothing, I try the gate.
It moves a bit when I push on it.
"Give me a hand," I say, placing both hands firmly on it.
Both of them stand with me.
As I nod, we all shove on the gate.
The hinges screech as they slowly move.
Once they're open enough, we lead the horses thru.
Miyavi first, me bringing up the rear.
As I walk thru, I feel something weird.
"What the hell was that?" I say, trying to brush off the sensation.
"You felt that? I'm surprised," Miyavi looks at Kai. "Did you feel anything?"
Kai shakes his head, "No."
"Ok, be surprised. But tell me what that was."
"What you felt is a spell. I'm guessing it's part of what's keeping the young man here."
"Nice. You felt it, too?" I ask him.
"Yeah, but I'm used to the feeling of magic. Was it like moving thru water or like being covered in webs?"
"A little of both, actually. And I'd like a little warning next time. Think you can do that?" I add, shuddering.
Miyavi chuckles, "I'll try to remember that."
We decide to head to the stables first and take care of the horses before going into the house.
Besides, it'll give us a chance to form some kind of plan.
"The problem with plans," Miyavi says as he fills a bucket with water "is that you tend to tie yourself to it. My idea is just to go in and wing it."
"Really? You don't want to think this thru?" Kai sounds shocked.
But for some reason, I'm not surprised.
It seems to fit with the rest of his persona.
"Well, at least we're going to stick together, right?" Kai says.
"Absolutely. Strength in numbers, ya know," Miyavi replies, flashing a grin.
We make our way to the nearest door, which happens to open into the kitchen.
Slowly, we move thru the room.
It's obvious that whoever lives here keeps everything in it's place.
If it weren't so clean, I'd think it was abandoned.
Moving on to the next room, I see it's just as orderly and clean.
"Whoever lives here's a neat freak, like you," I whisper at Kai.
He just shoots me a glare, continuing on.
We find ourselves in a spacious room.
It looks like a library, complete with comfortable looking chairs in front of a fireplace.
Miyavi scowls, moving closer to one of the chairs.
He motions us to join him, pointing at a specific one.
As I step closer, I realize that there's someone sitting in it.
But before we can get any closer, he stands, stretching his long arms over his head.
I freeze, waiting to see what's going to happen next.
He turns, catching sight of the three of us.
His mouth forms an 'o' of surprise before he takes a step back.
"How did you get in here?" he asks, putting the chair firmly between him and us.
"We walked in the door," Miyavi smiles at him.
"But he said..," he trails off, thinking.
"Who said what?" I ask, staying where I am.
"He said I couldn't leave and no one could help me," he looks at us, clearly confused. "But if that's true, how'd you just walk in?"
"We haven't managed to help you yet. So I'd hold off on that one," Miyavi tells him, stepping a bit closer.
The man scowls, "Who are you, anyway?"
"I'm Miyavi. This is Kai and that's Aoi," he says, pointing to each of us in turn. "Who are you?"
"I'm Uruha," he smiles shyly at us.
"How'd you get here? And why are you being kept prisoner?" Kai asks as we all sit.
