I'd much rather be friends with Igby than Holden, or whatever his name is.

Mrs. Keller handed out The Catcher In The Rye today for us to start reading. Talk about a let down. I really thought I'd love this book, but the more I read it, the more I hate it. Hopefully, it will get better. I'm so disappointed. Everyone says what an amazing book this is, and I don't even like it. What's wrong with me?

I'm probably just judging ( Read more... )

I didn't really like Catcher in the rye at first neither.. but reading it more and more it's good. but it DOES NOT compare to Perks. not at all, everyone says it does.

the perks of being a wallflower is pretty much my favorite book of all time, so NO BOOK can compare to it. well, besides the virgin suicides.

and i hate the name holden. it makes me think of a door knob or something. >=[

j.d. salinger never wrote books with plots, because life doesnt really have a plot. you have to get into his mindset, he's telling a simple story of a guy fed up with life, who's being told he must choose what he wants to do, and he just likes children so much he wants to catch them and save them from falling. and on the way to the hospital he ends up in he has a whole lot of life happen to him, and you have to look at it as interruptions along the way to whatever your destination. ive often picked up the phone with a burning desire to call someone but couldnt think of anyone to call so i just stood there like a schmuck till i hungup. and theres other stuff i was gonna say but i forgot it all.

I loved that book. Charlie from Perks of Being a Wallflower is cooler though.

Ok, now I just read all of the other comments and have just come to the conclusion you're all idiots. The Catcher in the Rye is a great book, it is the orignal Perks of Being a Wallflower, and without it there would be NO Perks of Being a Wallflower. Read it and learn the roots of a teenage agnst book. Not doing this is like saying you love NoFX but hate the Ramones, or worse yet, dont even know who they are. Read the goddamn book, its GOOD.

i don't know if i like the catcher in the rye yet, but from what i read so far i just don't like it. but like i said, i'm probably judging it too quick. in perks, i really related to a lot of the stuff charlie was saying. in the catcher in the rye, i can't feel any connection with holden, as lame as that may sound. i can't absorb a book if i don't understand the main characters thoughts. i don't know, i'm just rambling. i guess it all depends on how you view life and if you agree with the character or not. people who agree with holden will probably like the book a lot more than someone who doesn't agree or understand him (even though i do agree with him and understand him, but this comment is getting way too confusing so i'll just stop here.)
