I heard a British victim of the Mumbai attacks on the radio this morning talking about how how he was not given any financial compensation. Today, I made the slightly disturbing discovery that I don't exist. It's been a bit of a shock to me to discover this, as I'm sure you can guess.
I certainly feel that people referring to me as "racial foreigner #1264" would not be pejorative at all. I can also understand that it's necessary to maintain a distinction between me, as a person born ( Read more... ) -

OMG!
I was looking at stuff relating to today's DISMAL Englandbattingcollapse, and discovered that Curtly Ambrose and Ritchie Richardson are in a reggae band together now called The Big Bad Dread and the Baldhead" -how did I not know this before?! I've just discovered Dan Savage's podcast - he's a sex and relationship advice columnist - it's great. Thoroughly recommended. Anyone else have any podcast recommendations? I am sometimes too tired to read on my commute and could use some more to listen to. I prefer longish ones (20 mins plus) but shorter ones are ok too. -

I thought this was an intriguing comment piece. I totally disagree with it, though, and will try to explain why.
I’ve never really been a huge fan of rhetoric - in the sense of long uninterrupted speeches. Being a classicist, I’ve read plenty of what is considered to be superb rhetoric (in the original languages) so I don’t think my dislike of it ( Read more... ) -

I never see anyone eating or drinking on the tube. Is this an unwritten rule? I find it very weird because you see people eating and/or drinking on trains (even commuter trains at rush hour) but never tubes. Not even drinking coffee in the early morning. I never know whether, if I eat or drink on the tube, people will be really annoyed with me.
