2010 - A year in review

1. What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?
Walked in an around the factory floor of the Boeing wide-body factory in Everett WA. That was AWESOME
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't really remember what they were, and I suspect I know what they would have been (mostly living healthier), but I didn't keep them. I'll try next year with renewed vigor -- reposted from last year
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Lots of people! Notably on here punquin, therealocelot and firefly21
4. Did anyone close to you die?
My grandma on my dad's side died a few days after I posted last year's summary at age 95. Nice lady, and was with it until the end
5. What countries did you visit?
Australia, Canada, US, HK
6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
2009's wish for this was a car. We now have Teh Prius, and it's awesome. So I'll say Canadian Permanent Residency
7. What dates from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Jan 28 - We fired 25 people from UBC IT, including 4 of my 5 staff. I now have 7 staff directly reporting to me, and another 7 who I give day to day work to. It's an upside, but it was still a bit of a shock to most people, but not me. I knew it was coming and kept my mouth shut.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Continued success and fun at work
9. What was your biggest failure?
Perhaps it was a personal failing that I wasn't more emotional about all the staff getting fired from work on one day. But for the most part they were dead wood and they had it coming. I say for the most part, as we also had to lose two very sweet admin people. I'm glad to hear they both have found new jobs with UBC.
I also went a bit apeshit at a kid who ran over to clean our windshield. But I felt bad about that - I overreacted in panic + jetlag weirdness. So it's good to know that I can feel remorse.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I've been sick as a dog for the last 4 days, but I'm on the mend now. I've had a cough for the last 3 months too.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Priiiiiiiiiiiiius
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
lizbyrd , for continuing to be awesome.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
So many people in politics *headdesk*
14. Where did most of your money go?
Travel :D
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The Aviation Geek Fest factory floor tour of Boeing was amazing! But it was also really exciting coming back here to Perth to visit people. And going backstage at UBC's end of year concert in April and hanging out with Hey Ocean! and the Barenaked Ladies.
16. What song will always remind you of 2010?
fun. - at least I'm not as sad as I used to be.

i. happier or sadder? Happier I think
ii. thinner or fatter? About the same

In South Perth with Elizabeth's family and my mum. Was nice :D

With the Prius. I also stayed in love with Elizabeth :)

None. Except with a Black Prius

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Nah, don't think so.

I don't think I've read any really :(
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

A Prius :D
29. What did you want and not get?
A Dodge Charger. I was convinced it was not a good idea.
30. What was your favourite film of this year?
I really liked The Kings Speech, but I saw a lot of movies this year, which was good. While Liz was doing nanowrimo meetups, I would go to a nearby cinema and see whatever was on and interesting.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Went out to dinner with Liz at Alfa Greco-Roman. I was 31.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Hmm not sure. I was pretty happy all things considered. Being able to talk to more people on Skype? :D
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
"Hi, I'm a Mac"
34. What kept you sane?
Liz. TV.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Felicia Day is kinda cute. She Tweeted a reply to me once <3
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Internet Censorship. I remain fundamentally opposed to ISPs being required to implement a government run framework for censorship of the internet, regardless of the purposes.
37. Who did you miss?
I miss lots of my friends from Perth, but quite a few of them won't be there if/when we go back. So I miss them as people wherever they are now.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
I continue to meet a fair few nice people here in Vancouver. Co-worker S who started back with us in June is delightfully nutty.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010
Merge at the merge point in a road, not before. It lets more people into the area and reduced backwards congestion.
