I've wanted to post these photos side by side for a while. The first photo I found on a website that a friend circulated, and was taken as part of a series of postcards of Leopoldville, as Kinshasa was known before the country's independence from Belgium in 1960.

Went to Chain of Rocks Bridge as well. I didn't figure that we'd go there, so I didn't look anything up ahead of time. As it turned out, they were having Eagle Days there so we headed out. Didn't see any eagles (at least not there other than the stuffed one in one display and a live one in another display) but we did walk across the bridge. ( Read more... )

Here is Eads Bridge in St Louis, completed in 1874 and still in use today. It was the first major bridge to use steel and cantilevered construction and was the first bridge to span the Mississippi in St Louis. The first picture was taken ca1901.

This is probably the best one that I took. It's at 8th and Locust in downtown St Louis looking at the northeast corner. The picture came from a collection of photos by J R Eike taken between 1914 and 1917.

I just got back from a trip to St Louis to meet up with some friends. One of the things we did was to take some pictures for then_now. We got a good many of our pictures from here and most of what we used were downtown. Unfortunately, a good many of them have nothing that remotely resembles anything from the original picture. This is part of the first First Baptist Church, they now own half of downtown! Many buildings, many parking garages... :)

The opposite corner of Monroe and Laura St. This is standing right next to the library. This is Snyder Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church. Although it's not a church anymore, it still there, and they have bands play in there sometimes. It's still a gorgeous building.

But not my last! I am SOOO glad to have found this community, it's given me the perfect "project" and got me started taking pictures again. I live in Jacksonville, FL- and work downtown so this first batch I'm going to be sending in over the week is going to be downtown.
