I heard someone talking on the stairs as I was going into my flat about dates for Hermione and Ron's wedding. Are we supposed to bring a date? Why didn't anyone bother to tell me? The wedding's in less than a week! That's not enough time to ask someone properly! And anyways, now they'll know that I'm an idiot and that it was a last minute date!

I never knew dates were mandatory for weddings.

Neither did I! Well, but also, if everyone else has a date, it doesn't have to be mandatory for me to look like a fool.

Someone was talking about dates, though, like they're required!

I'm sure that people are just attempting not to look like they're doomed to loneliness by turning up to a wedding with a date. Like validating themselves in the wake of Spotty and Bushhead's holy matrimony, or something.

I mean, why be ashamed of being unattached?

Dates are most definitely not required. In fact, it's probably better to attend without one--that way, at the reception, you can dance with anyone and everyone without repercussion.

That's what I'm telling myself doing.

See! It's a valid strategy, isn't it, and it's more fun than worrying about a less-than-thrilled date.

Well, quite. And you don't have to ask someone to go with you when you might not like them much, or who might get the wrong idea, or who might not like it if you want to go talk to random people they don't know. It's genius, really.

I'm not taking a date.

Not that this is a hint for you to ask me, of course.

But... Jimmy! I thought this would be our chance! We could dress in matching robes and confess our everlasting love for each other and steal the spotlight from Ron and Hermione!

Dates aren't a requirement, Dean.

Good to hear, especially since I already have dress robes and it would have been a bother to find someone to ask who has something to match!

Does it take a week to properly say "Are you busy on Saturday night? No? Will you please go to the wedding of Red and Frizzy with me? I'm not trying to pull you, unless you want to be pulled."?

Ron and Hermione, it's really not that hard to remember.
