I've spent all day reading astronomers' attempting to do history. It's both funny and infuriating. They're so naive! I keep shouting at the articles. It's a good job I'm alone...

I'm back from Rome! I'll do a proper entry, with choice photos, at some point in the near future, but for the moment it will have to suffice for me to say that it was interesting and fun, but bloody hard work and my feet ache like crazy from all the walking/standing all day every day. Also, I have tanned feet for the first time in my life!

We think we should be able to escape today - it looks like the Worcester to Bristol line is open (all the other lines out of Worcester are closed: Oxford, Birmingham, Cardiff). Well, for the whole of this morning the lines between Gloucester and Worcester, and Hereford and Worcester were closed. Late this afternoon the line between Gloucester and Worcester reopened, but the line between Gloucester and Cardiff is now flooded at Lydney and there is an unreliable taxi service that may run to get past the flooding... I don't think this will come as a big surprise to anyone, but I love Rome, the TV show (as well as the city). It's awesome. Yes, it's not wholly accurate, but it's a damned sight better than any other depiction of ancient Rome that I've ever seen - it's gritty and nasty, with a veneer of nice when you look at the rich people.
