Tips for Iconmaking by spuzz @ morbid_girls.

A HUGE tutorial which covers pretty much everything in a very detailed way and links to more specific tutorials depending on the subject.

Textures/Brushes Guide by shoqolad @ distractiions

Another long tutorial covering pretty anything you can do with textures and how to combine them with brushes and layer masks. It's great not only to learn new tricks but also to go to for inspiration when you don't know how to work around a tricky image.

I cut my Photoshop teeth on tutorials by awmp at awmpdotnet. What I loved about her tutorials was that they weren't about "how to get this specific coloring" but rather were excellent tours of Photoshop itself, teaching how to use various parts of it. Her series on Pop Art and Grunge taught me how to make graphics from scratch.

She has a unique take on even very basic skills, such as brightening a very dark cap, which she does without using the ubiquitous screen layers. Although she hasn't written new tutorials in a depressingly long time, because she addresses tools rather than icon trends, her tutorials are still as useful today as they were when she was active. I miss her as I'm sure there's much I could learn from her.

oh, thanks for this! When I first started using photoshop, I tried to find a tutorial that showed me more what all the tools do, rather than how to get a specific coloring. thanks! :D:D

Glad someone else can appreciate the tutorials! They're written in the best way possible for me: utilizing the tools while making something like a texture. I find that much more useful than just reading about a tool.

Yes! and I really like the brightening tut you linked. i've been having so much trouble with TVD caps and this is a much better way to brighten them than by using screen layers.

The next tutorial writer I discovered when I started was ohfreckle. In a sea of "tutorials" that were little more than a series of layers and settings, ohfreckle stood apart as explaining why she chose the settings she did and why she chose each tool she did.

I'm at a loss to tell you which are the most amazing because seriously? I just have to flail and say, "ALL OF THEM!" The ones that I refer to over and over and over are, How I Icon, both her wonderful texture guides, and this Supernatural tutorial, which gave me my first hook into figuring out how to color Supernatural caps.

I have her newest tutorial on blending bookmarked to explore again.

I love ohfreckle's tutorials. I've been making icons since 05 and her tutorials are ones I often reference back to time after time. She posted a font guide a while back that I still look at and consider to be one of the tools that really helped improve my text and take it to another level. And of course where would we SPN icon makers be without her Supernatural tuts, am I right? :)

You are so right! No clue where the Supernatural iconning world would be but I, for one, would be out in the weeds. Do you have a link to the font guide? I don't have it in my memories. 0.0

Here it is. Keep in mind it's over 5 years old and just gives the basics, but the tips are still valid and totally useful IMO. :) Best font guide ever!

No matter how many text tuts I read, I still suck at text. And I've read all of those. That is sad.
