Chapter 7 Ohno unbuttoned his shirt halfway and pulled it off, carelessly dropping it on the ground. Sighing heavily, he dropped down on his bed. He frowned at the ceiling, as if it were at fault for causing his heart to beat quicker than usual.
He knew it was because of Nino. It was always Nino. Ohno didn't know why, but it was only that younger boy who made Ohno act so differently, that even Sho didn't quite understand that part of him.
When Ohno had picked up the ID card for the first time, he recognized the name as 'that piano kid'. The face caused a different reaction though- a flashback.
Ohno arrived at the Ninomiya house, and he immediately heard guitar playing. It sounded beautiful, with talent, that he couldn't help look for the source. His eyes quickly found the small, round hands strumming the guitar. “Ah!” The voice of the child brought Ohno's eyes to the face, which brightened with delight at his arrival. “Did you like it? The song,” he asked a little shyly, and Ohno nodded quickly. The boy beamed and set his guitar aside; Ohno felt a little disappointed, but he took out his art supplies and began to teach the slight boy what he could.
When Ohno remembered the distant memory, he realized the famous first year pianist also had to have some kind of hidden guitar talent as well. But when it came out that Nino didn't want anyone to find out, Ohno couldn't turn his attention away.
In a way, he had missed the cheerful boy who cried on him. Ohno knew he wasn't going to get to see that Nino again because his actions obviously only pissed the younger boy off, but for some reason he couldn't stop himself. Most of the time, Ohno didn't get himself.
But when Nino started to get flustered around him more and more, it only made Ohno act more. Eventually, his feelings had changed- what had started as some kind of game to Ohno became a desire. He knew he was being selfish; forcing his feelings onto Nino, and even telling him he had to kiss him in order to get an explanation. However, Ohno knew his feelings weren't one-sided. Nino showed so many obvious signs that he liked Ohno too, but Nino was stubborn, and somehow Ohno sort of liked that. For one, Ohno could easily show his 'affection' without worrying about having the feelings exactly returned or rejected.
And now it was almost his birthday. Ohno usually celebrated it with his family, and sometimes friends from school. He didn't think Nino liked him enough yet to actually want to meet him out of school, so he wanted to be with Nino a little more on the day before. Right now, Ohno felt like he didn't need new art or fishing supplies to keep him happy.
Prove or show my love, huh... Ohno closed his eyes, remembering the younger boy's words. Really, Nino could be so cute sometimes. Ohno wanted to. He wanted more than anything else to show his love, but at the same time, he felt a little scared. He didn't want to push too far much too soon; he needed Nino to tell him it was okay, even if not by words because Nino was too shy sometimes.
Ohno smiled and sat up, reaching for his sketchbook (which always somehow managed to stay in reach, wherever he was). He started sketching quickly and skillfully, trying to capture Nino's features perfectly.
In a matter of minutes, Nino's brilliant eyes were at the top of the page, ending with Nino's naked shoulders. Ohno stared at the precious neck, up to the mole on his chin. Ohno swallowed, closing the sketchbook and putting it back into his bag, away from view. He tried his best to ignore the slight demanding urge in his pants. Ohno would have to wait; he was meeting Nino tomorrow after all. He just had to wait a little more.
--
Ohno stood outside Nino's house, shivering a little as the day was colder than usual. He stopped almost immediately when Nino came out and rushed over to him.
“God you don't even tell me you're picking me up or whatever,” Nino muttered angrily as he neared Ohno. “Look, you better have actual plans for today or I'm gonna ditch you.”
“Would you really?” Ohno replied, smiling while the younger boy glared back at him. Nino looked kind of adorable in his casual clothes. “Well you don't have to worry about that.” Ohno took Nino's hand and threaded their fingers together, watching Nino's cheeks grow red with amusement. However, Nino's fingers curled in acceptance, and Ohno squeezed gently.
“I don't know why I'm going out with you today,” Nino sighed. Ohno didn't know either; there wasn't much to like from his actions he thought, but love was a strange feeling.
“Because you love me?” Ohno smirked.
“Fuck that, just go,” Nino replied sharply, his eyes flickering to his house. (He probably didn't want anyone in there seeing them holding hands like a couple, Ohno thought.) Ohno couldn't help notice that Nino hadn't particularly answered his question, but he didn't say anything.
It had taken a little while to get to the destination, but Ohno was glad Nino's patience stayed (although he would have just laughed and brushed it off if Nino started complaining). Nino did grumble a little when Ohno stopped at the entrance to a beach.
“I usually fish here,” Ohno said, pointing to the boats lined up on the shore. “You should see the tan I get during summer,” he chuckled.
“I get seasick,” Nino murmured, a little embarrassed.
“Do you now..” Ohno's current thoughts then were imagining Nino huddling in the corner, his face greener than usual. The sadistic part of Ohno kind of wanted to see that for real.
Nino tightened his grip on Ohno's hand, as if to return him back to reality. Ohno smiled at him and continued on the way. “Oh, that's where I get my fishing supplies,” Ohno pointed out the store not too far away. They walked in silence, but it was comfortable.
At least Ohno thought so. He glanced over at Nino, who looked troubled. Ohno smiled to himself, wondering if it was only him who got Nino flustered so much. He would be quite happy if it was.
Ohno then stopped at an art store.
“Let me guess,” Nino said, “this is where you get your art supplies?” Ohno chuckled and nodded.
“It's a nice place to be in.”
“For artists, you mean.” Ohno raised an eyebrow at Nino. “I mean, I've been here before,” Nino explained, “It's really packed with too many art stuff; it smells funny.”
Ohno laughed. “Then what place would you like?”
“A..game store? I guess,” Nino answered. Ohno hummed and started walking again. Not too long after, they arrived at a bakery.
“My dream,” Ohno said softly, “is to own a bakery.” Nino looked at him curiously.
“I don't know what mine is,” Nino said, “But I think I'll study directing and producing in America..”
Ohno thought it somehow matched Nino. When he started to take a step forward, Nino stayed still and let go of Ohno's hand. Ohno looked back at him; Nino was biting his bottom lip.
“Nino?” Ohno already knew what it was going to be; it was written all over Nino's face.
“You..” Nino started, lowering his eyes. “Do you even care?” Nino blushed, his frown stubbornly staying in place.
He's so obvious, Ohno thought, smirking. Nino scowled. “Of course I care.”
“Eh..” Nino sighed and scratched his head. “I really don't get you.” Ohno laughed softly in response, agreeing in his mind. Ohno did care- he just had a hard time showing feelings in his face sometimes.
“But I find it hard,” Nino continued, “to think of you as..caring.”
“Nino...Have you decided yet?” Ohno looked up to the sky, wondering why he had to act the way he did. “Whether I love you or just want some physical contact.”
“Why-” Nino sounded uncertain, and Ohno looked back down at him. “Why do I have to choose?”
“Because I'd be happy to do either one,” Ohno said smoothly. Nino's eyes widened as if he suddenly realized something, and he should have, the older boy thought.
“So you do...” Nino coughed out an awkward laugh, looking anywhere but at Ohno. “Can't I choose neither?”
“....You can,” Ohno said quietly. If Nino's feelings weren't ready yet, that would be fine. Ohno would just have to work harder.
Nino stayed silent, then shook his head. “It's not fair,” Nino said, a hint of a whine. “All I wanted was to become a great pianist, then you come and make me all...” He trailed off, looking annoyed. Ohno chuckled and ruffled Nino's hair.
“Did you want that?” Ohno asked. Nino stared at Ohno, already knowing that Ohno knew the answer.
“I wanted you to go away,” Nino muttered. “But now, now you're like Aiba.”
“Aiba?”
“I mean, he's annoying as hell but he's my best friend..”
“Should I take that as a compliment then?” Ohno smiled.
“All I'm trying to say is that you still piss me off but I don't want to- to lose you,” Nino ended, embarrassed. Ohno lifted his hand and placed it on Nino's cheek, stroking it softly. Nino let him, but observed Ohno's eyes for the look Ohno was sure he carried.
“What's with that,” Nino muttered, “You look so weird like that.” He looked off to the side and Ohno could make out a thin blush in his cheeks. Ohno chuckled softly and let his hand fall down. “Anyway, I'm tired of standing outside this bakery!” Nino took Ohno's hand and began walking, pulling the older boy with him. Ohno watched Nino's back, amused.
“Nino-chan, where are you bringing me?”
“I don't know!” Nino snapped back. Ohno couldn't help but smile fondly. After a few minutes, Nino stopped at a deserted park (which was relatively near Ohno's house but he was sure Nino didn't know that) and let go of Ohno's hand.
“I used to come here a lot when I was little,” Nino explained sheepishly.
“I did, too,” Ohno said quietly. Now that he thought about it, he probably did play a bit with Nino at that park. (At least he remembered his mom telling him that he did when he was going to Nino's house to tutor.)
“Ah..” Nino sighed softly. “All these connections from the past just creep me out,” he groaned.
“Perhaps we're fated to be together?” Ohno quickly kissed the tip of Nino's nose, unable to help himself. The spot he had kissed soon turned red as a deep blush filled Nino's face, but he didn't say anything.
Well that's an improvement, Ohno thought happily.
Nino took out something out of his pocket and shoved it into Ohno's hand. It was poorly wrapped in brown paper. Ohno looked at Nino questioningly then back at the object and unwrapped it without waiting for Nino's permission; he assumed it was for him to unwrap anyway.
Ohno almost laughed when he found a Wii game.
“It was just lying around in my house and I didn't wanna pay for something,” Nino shrugged. “Sucks for you if you don't even have a Wii.”
“Thanks,” Ohno replied simply (Nino muttered something about why he couldn't give better reactions). He didn't play much, but his mom did, and she'd probably make him play with her anyway.
“Anyway, happy birthday,” Nino said, smiling shyly. Ohno grinned and kissed Nino's lips softly.
It was only to hide his own thin blush.
“Would you stop with the kissing!” Nino flushed a crimson red, turning away and rubbing his lips with the back of his hand. “But...Thank you,” he murmured quietly. Ohno raised his eyebrows, though Nino wasn't looking at him. “I- for today.”
Ohno smiled softly, feeling his heart warm a little. He hadn't planned on just telling the younger boy a bit more about him, but he felt it was more fair to. And if Nino was going to ever want to date him, he'd probably want to know more about him. (Again, Ohno was reading Nino's feelings like an open book, but he was just that obvious.)
“You're so cute,” Ohno said with a smug smile.
“Whatever, I'm leaving,” Nino declared, already annoyed.
--
“What is that, a horror game!?” Ohno's sister stared at the TV screen in shock. Ohno looked at her horrified expression, shrugged, and continued playing. “Satoshi, do you have any weaknesses at all?” She sighed and left the room.
Ohno did have a weakness.
One that he loved.
