Yesterday I was driving in the lousiest part of Cincinnati with Elliot. We were on our way to pick up some free school supplies from Crayons to Computers. As I turned a corner I heard a loud BANG followed by some intense scraping. Pulling into the fleabag motel on the corner, I realized my muffler had come detached from the car.
At that moment, I also realized I did not have my cellphone.
Also, Ellen is away for the next few days.
I'm BONED.
I look under the car and I can see what's wrong- the piece that holds the muffler to the bottom of the car has lost a screw... but I have no screws in the car. I have NOTHING in the car. No tools, no spare parts... nothing.
Here's what I do have: A bunch of Latin textbooks that our friend had left in my backseat when we moved. A lanyard that I wear to carry my school ID around. A GameBoy Advance charger.
Here's what I do: With my foot, I hold up the muffler and stack textbooks underneath it until it's hugging the bottom of the car. Then I rip my laynard apart and feed it through the hole where the screw was only minutes ago. I wrap that around the side of the muffler several times. Then I take the GBA charger and wrap that around the muffler. I tie off the charger to the inside of the trunk.
...and now the car runs more smoothly than it has in months.
