Ryo opened his eyes, pleased to see that he was waking up next to Yamapi. After all the shit that has been happening to them, he finally has him.
He quickly stood up, praying that the sleeping boy would not wake up and left the room. He went to the nurse’s station and looked for Shiraishi-sensei.
“Sumimasen, Is Shiraishi-sensei here?” asked Ryo.
The nurse quickly shook her head and told him, “Can you please wait here? I’ll page him.”
He thanked the nurse and sat down by the side. A warm hand was placed on his shoulder as he saw Shiraishi-sensei behind him.
“Nishikido-san? Why did you call for me?”
Ryo stood up and faced him. He had his pleading look. “Listen, sensei. Yamapi has already told me what’s wrong with him. Truth is I don’t know how I’ll live without him. I have only been with him for what less than a day? I know it might mean nothing to you and he’s just like any patient to you but he’s my lover, my soulmate. I can’t live without him. Please tell me what I can do.”
The doctor looked down and shook his head, “Since he was young, Yamashita-san had always been sick. He was always admitted to this hospital and I had to check on him. He is one of my closest patients. I completely understand that you love him but there’s nothing more that I can do for him. Only a heart transplant could save him.”
“So get him a transplant! Isn’t there this transplant list that you could put him on?”
“I’ve tried but his condition is too weak to be considered. Only a direct transplant could cure him.”
Ryo’s tears started to form as his anger was rising. “I’ll do it! I’ll give him my heart. I understand the risk and I’m willing to die for him.”
“I know that Nishikido-san but I can’t do it. If Yamashita-san survives and starts asking for you, how do you expect me to tell him that his lover was dead because you gave his life for him?”
“B..but If I don’t give him the heart then he dies?”
Shiraishi-sensei smiled at him, “Just enjoy the time you have left.”
With that, Shiraishi-sensei bowed and left Ryo in tears. Yamapi was going to die in a few days and there was nothing he could do.
Not wanting to waste another minute without him, Ryo rushed to his room. To his surprise, NEWS and KATTUN members were already there. They were piled up in Yamapi’s room with Tegoshi sitting next to Yamapi.
What the hell is that Tegoshi doing near my Yamapi?!~
Of course, technically in everyone’s eyes, Yamapi and Tegoshi were still a couple. Even Tegoshi doesn’t know about Ryo and Pi.
“Oi! Ryo! Where were you?? We’ve been trying to reach you for the past week!” said Akanishi.
“I’ve been with him,” answered Ryo.
Tegoshi was stroking Yamapi’s head slowly as if trying to tell him, “Don’t worry, I’m already here.”~
Ryo knew that he had nothing to worry about and that Tegoshi still had rights to Yamapi but his jealousy was eating him up. He wanted to tear Yamapi away from Tegoshi and not let him get near Yamapi even a millimeter.
“Guys, can I please talk to you outside?” Ryo pointed to the door and everyone but Tegoshi left the door.
“Tegoshi, we have to talk.” Whispered Ryo.
“Okay.” Answered Tegoshi.
As soon as the door was closed, everyone shut their mouths. It was the first time that Ryo had been this serious so they know something was wrong with Yamapi.
Sighing Ryo said, “I don’t know how to tell you this but Yamapi. . He’s dying. He has a heart disease and needs a heart transplant.”
Tegoshi started to cry as Masuda was stroking his head reassuringly. Jin felt like he was hit by a car and sat down catching his breath as the ragged sobs left him. The other members were also in tears. Yamapi had always been kind to them. He had done everything with precision and hard work.
Koyama spoke up and said, “But! If there were someone to directly donate a heart. He could be saved right?”
Nishikido nodded. “Who do you know that’ll donate a heart? The person has to be dead in order to transplant that heart.”
Tegoshi looked up and said, “I have an idea but I’m not telling you guys first. I know someone who’s about to die.”
They all looked at him and smiled. Kazuya looked at Tegoshi and smiled, “I know how hard this is for you Tegoshi. We know how much you love Yamapi but you have to be strong for him okay?”
Ryo’s jealousy was about to burst. He was so mad at them for not even considering his feelings then again, they didn’t know that he loved Yamapi. Ryo merely sighed and entered the room, “Yamapi? Are you up? There are a lot of people here to see you.”
Yamapi opened his eyes and nodded, “I’m up. I just don’t know how to face them. I don’t know how to tell Tegoshi that I don’t love him and that I love you and most especially I don’t know how to tell them goodbye.”
Ryo patted his shoulder and smiled, “Don’t worry about a thing okay? Just be yourself. I’m sure they missed you already.”
As if right on cue, both groups started to enter. Yamapi could tell that from Jin’s puffy eyes and Tegoshi’s red face that Ryo had told them about him.
At least, it would be easy~
“How are yo feeling, Pi?” asked Jin. His voice was still thick from all the crying but he didn’t mind it.
“I’m feeling fine.” Answered Yamapi.
“Minna, I have something to tell you.” Whispered Yamapi. “I know that you all know about my sickness.”
Taguchi looked at Yamapi and smiled at him, “You don’t have to say anything Yamapi. We know.”
Shige looked at him and smiled too. Everyone was smiling despite their sadness. It wouldn’t be good for Yamapi to see them sad. It would make his last days harder for him.
“That wasn’t it. I know you know about my condition but I wanted to apologize to you all. Especially to Tegoshi. I’m sorry because Tegoshi, I’m with Ryo now.”
Ryo’s eyes widened and his mouth fell open. Yamapi was really announcing to everybody that they were together. He glanced at the other members and they too had mouths open. They couldn’t believe what Yamapi was saying.
“What?,” whispered Tegoshi. “Are you serious?”
“Gomenasai Tegoshi.” Yamapi tried to stand up to reach Tegoshi and comfort him. Despite the fact that he loved Ryo more than any other person. He knew that Tegoshi felt for him what he felt for Ryo.
He tried to imagine not being able to be with Ryo because he loved someone else; not being to hug Ryo or kiss him and his heart hurt. He couldn’t imagine the pain that he had caused Tegoshi.
“Tegoshi, please stop crying. I know I screwed up and I really really am sorry. I know I am responsible for even allowing you to fall for me but I just want you to know that I’m not the guy for you. I want to let you go because if I stay with you, I can never make you happy. I can never make you believe that I love you when I really love someone else.”
Yamapi stood up and made his way towards Tegoshi. Jin supported Yamapi’s arm and shoulders because he was too weak to even walk on his but he knew that he should be responsible for his actions. He wordlessly patted the younger’s shoulder hoping to console the boy.
“Y. .yamashita-san. .Arigatou. thank you for giving me the chance to love you. Th. . thank you for. .not hurting me more. I know that maybe . .this is really the end. .and Ryo is your. . match. .not me. . .B. . bu. .but I’d like to let you know that whatever happens, I will always love you and if you ever need me. You know that I will always be there for you. . .It hurts. .and I’m sad. I want to shout at you. I want to strangle you but I want you to be happy. I’m still the Tegoshi who’s here for you always but I’ll keep all my feelings to myself. From here on out, I’m your friend.” He took a small bow and whispered, “Imama de Arigatou gozaimasu.”
The people in the room started applauding. They knew that Tegoshi was going through a rough time and they knew that he needed some time alone but the found the courage of the younger one to be inspiring. However courageous he might be, he had a heart; a young and fragile heart and he couldn’t take the pressure from everyone at the same time so with a small smile, he excused himself and left the room.
While buying a bottle of water from the vending machine, he accidentally overheard a few nurses by the nursing station.
“What do you thinks gonna happen to Yamashita Tomohisa-san?” asked the tall brunette.
“Well, judging from his chart. He’s got a week to live. Two weeks tops.” Sighed the smaller blond.
“I kinda like him. Why did you think the panel rejected his application? I mean, he’s healthy and young. Only his heart has the problem.”
“You know that. I heard that the reason he didn’t get a heart was because he doesn’t have a stable job. Look at his chart, it says here that he’s an actor. Yeah, he has money but with the number of projects that he has and the stress of being on stage again, he might wear out any heart that UNOS gives him.”
The tall brunette looked at the blond and said, “I really hope they find a donor soon. I heard that his boyfriend Nishikido-san asked Shiraishi-sensei to give his heart to Yamashita-san; literally.”
“Why didn’t Shiraishi-sensei accept him. He knows that Yamashita-san needs this heart.”
The brunette sighed and said, “It doesn’t matter. Shiraishi-sensei won’t accept his heart because he knows that Yamashita-san would die if he found out that Nishikido-san gave him the heart. It would crush him and he might even kill himself.”
Blond nurse just smiled at the other nurse, “The things people do for love. I still do hope that he gets his operation. I hope that someone could make a direct donation of their heart. It sounds so crazy right? Someone actually dying to give a heart?”
“Well, it is Yamashita-san’s only chance.”
Tegoshi’s tears started falling. A week?
I only have a week with him and he’s not even mine anymore!
He turned to go back to Yamapi’s room but looking by the glass window, he could see Ryo and Yamapi laughing. He could see Jin and the other KATTUN members making a joke about the other NEWS members. They were having this much fun with Yamapi around and his heart swelled with pain.
He loved Yamapi, he always will and this is the last thing he wanted to give him.
With that thought, Tegoshi climbed the stairs and headed for the roof.
