Artemis, dearest friend of my life, has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. General nausea and indefineable pain after eating led eventually to a CT scan on September 5, which showed a 4x5-cm mass on her pancreas. It was not operable. Meet Herman
My friend Nancy is taking care of her neighbor's bird, a 14-year-old macaw named Herman. She took me over to introduce me last Thursday. I was impressed. This is one big, colorful bird! Are we having fun yet?
I got my packet last Tuesday. This is a half-inch-thick pile of paper that I have to read, sign, fill out, or otherwise interact with before I begin to be officially considered for a position as a DAE. Most of it seems like routine sort of stuff, but some of it looms at me as mysterious, if not downright sinister.

Things are still very busy with me. I'm working on getting all my ducks in a row before becoming a DAE (I still haven't gotten the paperwork to start that process yet). Sent to get my birth certificate. Applied for passport. Checked my credit records; working to clear those ( Read more... ) -

Big day at the map factory
I've been getting to do some cool maps lately. Our FEMA region (Region IX) is first on-call as backup for Region IV, which is most of the Gulf Coast. So there will be a hurricane training exercise taking place next week, with lots of folks from our region going through a "practice" hurricane.
