Like a tiny mote of dust in a sunbeam
I went to the ENT hospital in Oxford today, to have my wayward nose prodded about for a while. I've had the right nostril cauterised, and I have to go back in about a month to have the left nostril done - apparently you can't do both at the same time, there's a chance it'll make a hole between the two nostrils or something. My mum's just phoned me to tell me she had the lead singer of a locally-well-known Oxford band round today, for a tea and a chat and to look through some old photos of the band he used to be in back in the late nineties.
I think this means my mum is officially cooler than me. -
The view from inside ward nine affords this much
I went to see Mogwai at Oxford Brookes on Saturday night. They were very good, and very loud - that was indeed the loudest gig I've been to, just as I was led to expect. My ears were still ringing through most of Sunday - they started to clear up late afternoon. They played a varied set, with some bias towards the new album 'Mr. Beast' obviously. ( Read more... ) -

I noticed this article on the BBC News website at the weekend, about how emailing and texting are replacing pen-and-paper for communication. It notes that 50% of written communication is by email (which actually sounds low to me), 29% by text message, and just 13% by letter (I haven't worked out what the other 8% is!). Friday night I went to the Zodiac to see a bunch of local all-girl rock bands at the Zodiac, including AllYouMiss, Harlette and Last Proposal. The music was good, but unfortunately I'd failed to realise that this was an all-ages gig and as such they weren't serving any alcohol. No cider for me, sadly. I don't know what is about clients in the software development world, but they seem to have a great knack for making things seem very simple right up until the point where you say "that will take about two weeks of work", before suddenly coming up with "oh, and we also need..." as if you can somehow squeeze all this extra stuff into the original ( Read more... ) -

I have been struck by the curse that is inextricably linked to flat-pack furniture. My attempt to put together the large bookcase that would have solved all my CD storage problems has been foiled at the first hurdle, upon discovery that one of the two sides of the unit hasn't got the holes drilled in for the shelf supports, which somewhat inhibits ( Read more... ) -

I think the battery in my iPod is starting to lose capacity. It was fully charged a couple of evenings ago, and now it's looking close to empty, and when I think back to how much I've used it since then I can't account for more than about six or seven hours or so.
