Hey, it's the first state on the list that I've actually lived in.
Virginia was my residence in January and February 2002 during my abbreviated stint in the Marine Corps Officers Candidate School at Quantico, Virginia. Fun fact: the
Acela line went through Quantico, and reputedly the bridge over the train line is built at odd angles to make it harder for candidates to march over while maintaining lock step. Or so they said. Who knows for sure? In any event, I haven't been back to Virginia since, except for flying in and out of
the airport on the way to D.C. for a fraternity convention.
The first time I recall entering Virginia was on that big 1989 road trip. We drove through it to get to D.C.. We did a very small of D.C. related touristy stuff there, including
Arlington and
Mount Vernon. Then we drove through it again on the way north to New York from North Carolina.
On a side note, did you know that Mount Vernon is the gateway to the
American Whiskey Trail? Did you know there that is an American Whiskey Trail? This is separate from the
Bourbon Trail, so don't get them confused. Anyway, I'm sure Virginia is full of fun things to do, but other than getting to
Monticello I don't have any particular burning desire to go back there.
