PKT25: Retreat
Much like Formal was our spring special event, Retreat was our fall special event. Retreat was basically a fancy name for "the Phi Kaps go camping," or at least outdoors. We'd take a weekend and go somewhere other than Cleveland. I don't remember if this aligned with Fall Break or was just random.
In the Fall 1999 semester, we rented some cabins in... I think West Virginia? I don't remember exactly. The major thing that I remember happening on that trip was that Mike fell asleep while driving and drove his car off the road, totaling it. Fortunately, Mike was driving a giant green whale of a car with lots of old fashioned steel in it (we lovingly called it Godzilla), and he was fine. As a bonus, the groceries he was transporting to Retreat in the trunk also survived the crash.
In the Fall 2000 semester, we went camping somewhere in Ohio. I want to say it was south of Columbus, but again I'm not sure. The main thing that stands out in my memory is that I got my first ever speeding ticket driving down to Retreat with a carful of PhiKaps. Fortunately, I was only going a few over the limit. I slept in the backseat of my car as tent space was limited.
During the Fall 1998 semester I was on co-op and missed Retreat. I don't particularly remember what we did for the other two autumns of my membership, although I seem to recall Bacher coordinating a day spent hiking in the Cleveland Metroparks near Squireview Castle followed by grilling out. I'm not sure if that was actually a low budget Retreat or just a fun day out though.
I've gone through the offices and committee chairs, and I've texted a few of my contemporaries, and I have NO idea which office planned Retreat. Someone suggested that it was the VP, but I was the VP in the Fall 1999 semester (it even says so on the composite), and I certainly didn't plan Retreat that fall. Someone else suggested Social Chair, which doesn't seem quite right to me either. Maybe there's some position that I forgot when I recapped them? I obviously don't know, but some position was in charge of organizing it. Hopefully someone will remind me when they see this.
