On Sunday, Mars House acquired several new pets. An old friend of mine was thinning his collection of spiders + snakes, and in the process I acquired a couple pretty Chilean Rose Hair tarantulas (male and female), while pixelmonster inherited a 2 year old rosy boa ( Read more... )

I've been terrified of spiders since I was a kid. I blame it on my mom, who used to scream bloody murder every time she saw one, therefore passing on her fear to me.

I'm also petrified of bees. With good reason. Anaphylaxis is not fun.

The good news about bees is that you *really* have to piss them off for them to sting you. Because if they sting you, they DIE. If a bee or wasp flies by - just be calm and stay still. They are attracted to motion - thus running and flailing arms is just about the worse thing to do!

Bees, yes. Only time I've been stung by a bee was when I accidentally stepped on one, barefoot. Bees have a pretty high threshold for attacking. Wasps are ornery bastards, though.

I used to pick up bumblebees with my bare hands and let them out when I found them trapped in windows. Until one misinterpreted my rescue attempt as hostile action. I had no idea they could cause that much pain..

So I don't fear them, but I have a fair deal of respect for them. I know they can cause me lots of terrible but temporary pain.

I see I'm in the minority for checking bears. I don't have an irrational fear of bears, but I'm pretty sure I'd be scared shitless if I came face to face with one. Because bears can kill people and I am not a fast runner.

I'm not afraid of bears, because even though they can out run me (both in speed and distance) - I know for a fact they are slower than my .45 LC bullets, which do nasty things to bear's heads.

Bugs bugs bugs bugs BUGS!!!!!!! They make me scream and drop things, some of which are breakable, and my spine goes all weird. However, he who shall not be mentioned by name always finds this funny, and tells me I should go to therapy for it. Well then, he can go to goddamn therapy for his SPIDER issues (which don't bother me a bit). And I *like* snakes.

damn me too! Hubby half the time makes fun of me, half the time gets annoyed with me. But heaven forfend there's a SPIDER around. Which I can easily squish.

and yes, snakes are pretty cool.

Most of the time, animals in general don't scare me unless they somehow startle me. Roaches in the house provoke extermination with extreme prejudice, but that's not really a fear reaction.

However, if something looked like it was going to come after me with the intent of injury or dinner, I'd certainly be afraid.

Most of these critters don't bother. I can even catch bats mid-air in a small room with a rags and gloves.
