I searched through FanfictionNet, AdultFanfiction, The Archive at the End of the Universe, Skyehawke, Fiction Alley, Restricted Section, Granger Enchanted, WIKTT Archives, Ashwinder, The Petulant Poetess, OWL, Digital Quill the sshg_exchange and grangersnape100.
Below are notable SSHG stories under 10,000 words posted between July 21, 2008 and July 21, 2009, including single drabbles and drabble series. I couldn’t list every such short story, there would be hundreds of them. Besides ones I personally liked, I’ve listed any recognized by the awards and rec sites Know It Alls (KIA), crack_broom and fangirl_tour, as well as the sshg_awards to highlight those that you might find worthwhile checking out. (Some stories are/will be listed here because of that recognition, and not because I would personally recommend them.)

Shorts are I think sadly neglected in the ship--don't get the attention and respect they deserve. I hate the term "one-shot"--it sounds dismissive to me and I can't tell you how often I've seen people review shorts and ask the author to expand it into a "real story." These are real stories and often it's the short stories where you find the most stylish, experimental, edgier fic as well the most scorching of the PWP and heart-warming of the fluff. They give more of a snapshot of the ship than works of longer lengths. Last year we were all a bit obsessed with rescuing Snape from snakebite--this year we tend more to take Snape's survival for granted and move on from there.
My favorite short story among those above happens to be somigliana's Unreliable Trio, because, like the best "drama" it makes me think, reflect on Ron and Snape and Hermione--their characters and how they might fit--or not fit--with each other. Another moving, thoughtful fic was MissTee123's A/U Breathe. For feel-good warm romantic fluff, you don't get better than the stories above by deeble (The Pleasure of That Madness), bluestocking (Let Nothing You Dismay), annietalbot (The Foreigner) and warded_portal (Midnight Oak, Moonlighting, The Windup Kiss, All In Good Time). Horror? Well, absolute_tash's The Flesh Menagerie was deliciously creepy while leaving me thoughtful and wallyflower's angsty The Curse chilling but with a ray of hope and feathersindigo's Secrets has a dark twist in the tale. Humor? Darned Child's The Unlikely Matchmakers and chivalric55's Life and Death of Lord Voldemort delivered laughs and grins, tonksinger's Advice to a New Husband has a wickedly sharp black humor and juniperus's The Frog Prince, bambu345's A Member of the Family and kribu's Meetings a gentle whimsy. If anyone should take a bow and deserve a nod as one of our best authors based on her shorts alone this year, that person should be lullabelle72--I had the hardest time choosing a representative sampling--she's been prolific and good. Moreover, along with warded_portal, Lula's good at delivering hot and stylish PWP and they are sometimes fluffy and often laced with humor. Try The Gentleman's Ticky Box, Illumination, Where the Pug Is, The Mausoleum and Diary, Diary, among others.
Among the drabbles and drabble series this year I've been the most impressed by the contributions of averygoodun. I thought her Three Lilies easily the most memorable of the single drabbles and Hell the most affecting of the drabble series. Another particular favorite is silburygirl's hilarious Juggling Act for how it satirizes and subverts the too-common Hermione-has-triplets trope. Most Drabble series I find rather too spare and choppy, but I think those listed above flow like real short stories.

Shorts are I think sadly neglected in the ship--don't get the attention and respect they deserve. I hate the term "one-shot"--it sounds dismissive to me and I can't tell you how often I've seen people review shorts and ask the author to expand it into a "real story." These are real stories and often it's the short stories where you find the most stylish, experimental, edgier fic as well the most scorching of the PWP and heart-warming of the fluff. They give more of a snapshot of the ship than works of longer lengths. Last year we were all a bit obsessed with rescuing Snape from snakebite--this year we tend more to take Snape's survival for granted and move on from there.
My favorite short story among those above happens to be somigliana's Unreliable Trio, because, like the best "drama" it makes me think, reflect on Ron and Snape and Hermione--their characters and how they might fit--or not fit--with each other. Another moving, thoughtful fic was MissTee123's A/U Breathe. For feel-good warm romantic fluff, you don't get better than the stories above by deeble (The Pleasure of That Madness), bluestocking (Let Nothing You Dismay), annietalbot (The Foreigner) and warded_portal (Midnight Oak, Moonlighting, The Windup Kiss, All In Good Time). Horror? Well, absolute_tash's The Flesh Menagerie was deliciously creepy while leaving me thoughtful and wallyflower's angsty The Curse chilling but with a ray of hope and feathersindigo's Secrets has a dark twist in the tale. Humor? Darned Child's The Unlikely Matchmakers and chivalric55's Life and Death of Lord Voldemort delivered laughs and grins, tonksinger's Advice to a New Husband has a wickedly sharp black humor and juniperus's The Frog Prince, bambu345's A Member of the Family and kribu's Meetings a gentle whimsy. If anyone should take a bow and deserve a nod as one of our best authors based on her shorts alone this year, that person should be lullabelle72--I had the hardest time choosing a representative sampling--she's been prolific and good. Moreover, along with warded_portal, Lula's good at delivering hot and stylish PWP and they are sometimes fluffy and often laced with humor. Try The Gentleman's Ticky Box, Illumination, Where the Pug Is, The Mausoleum and Diary, Diary, among others.
Among the drabbles and drabble series this year I've been the most impressed by the contributions of averygoodun. I thought her Three Lilies easily the most memorable of the single drabbles and Hell the most affecting of the drabble series. Another particular favorite is silburygirl's hilarious Juggling Act for how it satirizes and subverts the too-common Hermione-has-triplets trope. Most Drabble series I find rather too spare and choppy, but I think those listed above flow like real short stories.
