Well, I finally caved in and got a
Plurk.
And now I get back to the meme, after feeling too tired to do it on Friday or Saturday and in too lousy a mood to do it the following three days.
Technically, Ike is my favorite protagonist, but I put him down for favorite character, so this entry gets the runner-up.
Shirou is one of those characters who's amazingly fun to watch grow and develop as a character. At the start, he's something of a naive idealist chasing an impossible dream, and that doesn't really change at all in Fate.
In Unlimited Blade Works, however, Shirou is forced to face the flaws in his ideals and learns to accept them, but refuses to give up on them, in spite of the hurdles he has to face in his pursuit of them. His ideals are the main source of conflict between him and Archer, and their duel in this route is mind-blowing, both in the clash of their blades and the clash of their convictions.
Not to mention that he becomes one hell of a badass in this route. He picked up all of his sword techniques and projections from Archer (which makes sense, given Archer's identity), and learns how to use a Reality Marble, a type of forbidden, powerful magic that transports those nearby into the user's own mental world -- in Shirou's case, a field of blades. And he kicks the ass of the single strongest Servant in the entire continuity.
And then there's Heaven's Feel, for which I'll be vague out of courtesy for people following
professor_prof's LP. Here, Shirou is forced to face the flaws of his ideals in such a way that he chooses to give them up for the sake of Sakura. And once again, he becomes a badass -- Nine Lives Blade Works and Bad End #38 are testament enough to that.
And while I'm at it, I don't want to forget Shirou's
theme music. Give it a listen -- it's my all-time favorite track in the visual novel. And since this is Fate/Stay Night we're talking about, that says a LOT.
All around, Shirou is a character who gets some awesome character development and becomes one hell of a dude.
