Last week, Nicole and I carefully cleaned our shared desk in the grad office. It is now exceptionally tidy, with only a few post-it notes, some tiny toys, and our pair of coffee mugs to clutter the space. So I came in today and settled into the desk. Hot tea: check. So, there were several standing dead trees in our large yard, back by the pond, that we were ignoring because of birds/ habitat/ laziness etc. At the end of last winter, we lost one. I've been missing on here for awhile. The short version is, lots of lovely things have been happening in my life, but I'm still ill, and while we keep making slow progress in ruling things out (I do not have celiac disease, thank god) we don't seem to be progressing much toward answers. So, rather than an exciting vacation in Minnesota and a fun wedding, I have spent the last two days in the hospital: Thursday getting appendicitis diagnosed and the appendix removed, and yesterday feeling generally gross because of the holes that have been poked in my body. I'm just exhausted, but here's the update.

After visiting coryp on Tuesday, we drove to Salt Lake and stayed in The Sketchiest Motel Ever (hint: there was a puddle on the bed) for a night, then drove to San Fran and stayed with my friend Mark, then down Highway 1 to Salinas. Got in yesterday evening to a tasty homemade dinner, then ventured out on the town to see the new tattered cover location. Also, I recommend the Upstream Brewing Co in Omaha Nebraska for pretty good beer and an enjoyable evening, even on a Sunday night.
