Baylor’s Media Statement: Tirhas Habtegiris Case
I’m providing this in its entirety out of a sense of fairness to Baylor. I believe that Baylor’s physicians and staff acted out of their sense of compassion. The question of whether or not we agree with their decision remains one that each of us must answer.

"A woman who couldn't pay her bills is unplugged from her ventilator and dies. Is this wrong?"
According to an article in Slate, "Tirhas Habtegiris, a 27-year-old terminal cancer patient at Baylor Regional Medical Center in Plano, Texas, was removed from her ventilator last month because she couldn't pay her medical bills. The hospital gave Ms. Habtegiris' family 10 days' notice, and then, with the bills still unpaid, withdrew her life ( Read more... ) -

Waffles
It's been a lovely, lazy weekend. Yesterday we spent most of the day in bed with coffee and a dozen or so plant and seed catalogs, planning the vegetable garden and additions to the perennial borders. This morning I made my special waffles, and then we went outside and worked in the yard. Deb's off tomorrow too, so we have even more time!

Blossoms in January
It's snowing here in St. Louis today, but when I went out to check the mail I noticed a wonderful fragrance in the air: our witch hazel is in full bloom. Look under the cut for some photos I couldn't resist taking.
