I’m doing a study in literary metamorphoses and I’ve got a problem finding full-fledged definitions of the term in dictionaries of literary terms. The only exception is The Encyclopedia of Fantasy by J. Clute & J. Grant which does the job with really good entries for ‘metamorphosis’ and ‘shapeshifting’. Can one talk of a genre shift not as a historical phenomenon, not in the retrospect of time but an effect made by faulty translation?
