Luministi is the picture of a peaceful small town, not unlike the kind one might find in New England, though this town has its quirks. One look around the main streets in Luministi will show the savvy observer that things don't quite add up, but the residents don't seem to mind or really notice any of the changes that take place. It's something that simply happens in town and they've long accepted that. Most older residents live outside the town proper. If there is one thing they love, it's the ride into town as they come in for work or pleasure, but they don't use any conventional automobile or automated riding vehicle at all; just a bike. The newer residents are all housed in the townhome neighborhoods west and east of the town proper.
Another thing the residents are fond of are the sculptures scattered throughout town. One can be found in the southernmost part of the park. Another is located in front of town hall, to the northwest of the library, and in the small garden outside the clinic.
In addition to the human residents, Luministi is home to your standard woodland/suburban dwelling animals, such as squirrels, chipmunks, mice, rabbits, deer, frogs, toads, and the occasional stray cat or dog, but we ask that new citizens refrain from capturing them. Also, an assortment of wild birds, like robins, sparrows, finches, hummingbirds and other small birds populate the area, and a wide range of freshwater fish (sunfish, bass, catfish, bullheads, perch, etc.) swim in the man-made reservoir and river in the southern portion of town. Fishing as a sport is allowed, but town officials ask that all fish caught are tossed back. If citizens wish to partake in a nice fish filet, there are restaurants in town more than happy to cook one up in any number of ways.
It should be noted that, while the older residents claim to have no problem leaving town, the new residents will find that leaving town through exit A will bring them back into it through exit a and vice versa. The same phenomena occur for exits B and b.
❧ Town Features
A❧
Town Hall: Adjoining the town square and its central fountain sits the majestic town hall. All day-to-day activity in the Town of Luministi happens here! All bureaucratic offices and courthouse are contained within. To reach the mayor's office, go up the stairs and head down the hall to the very last door on the right. However, don't be disappointed if you can't get in to see him. You can, however, pay a visit to his secretary, Miss Osculia. The town clock is also housed in this building and it tolls on the half-hour--and is never off by a single second.
B❧
Sheriff's Office: Situated next to the town hall is the sheriff's office, including three jail cells. These days, they normally house rowdy drunks who had a few too many down at the pub. It must be noted that the jail cells possess a nullifying technology that will prevent any of the citizens' powers from working while inside (unless they are absolutely needed to survive).
C❧
Library: Near the town hall sits the Luministi Library. All citizens have access to the vast contents of the library, which include both hardcover/paperback books as well as digital versions of all fiction and non-fiction books (unfortunately, reference books are not allowed out of the library, even as digital copies.) Citizens may borrow any book using their CAT code at the front circulation desk. Books may go on loan for up to two weeks, but there is a steep fee for any late returns. Digital versions may be accessed at any time during the two week period through the CAT, but once the borrowing period has ended, all but the last page the citizen had read will be deleted from the CAT unit. (It must be noted that any materials inappropriate for those under 17 won't be accessible to them--not even the hardcopy versions.)
D❧
Shops and restaurant plazas: On either side of the square are a long row of shops and restaurants. The citizens of Luministi can find just about anything here! As far as shops go, there are clothes shops (ranging from bargain/thrift clothing to expensive/designer clothing, as well as for those special occasions where a ball gown or tuxedo, or even a costume, might be needed), local grocers always selling the freshest of produce, a bakery with the only the freshest bread available as early as 6 a.m. (and the smell of baked goods permeates the air during the better half of the day), a butcher's with just about any kind of meat imaginable (except humanoid), a general goods store that sells any household goods citizens may need and any other food items unavailable in the speciality shops. There is a farmer's market early Saturday mornings where the best deals and items are up for sale, and usually at half the price they bear during the rest of the week. Restaurants include a steakhouse, sushiya, English tea room, and pizzeria. There are restaurants that cater to all forms of diet the citizens of Luministi might require, and there is a strict no-smoking rule within the restaurants. There are, also, several umbrella-covered tables outside the eateries or for simply hanging out in the shopping plazas.
E❧
Malt Shop: In the west shopping plaza is a maltshop/diner popular for breakfast and a quick lunch and famous for the adjoining ice cream parlour and most especially for their malt shakes.
F❧
Cinema: Luministi's own Janus Theatre has recently finished extensive interior renovations to provide citizens with the latest and greatest of viewing experiences at any time during the day. New features include a concession stand in the front lobby with very affordable snacks ranging from popcorn and nachos to mini pizzas baked on-site and candy of all kinds imaginable. Every seat in the each theatre has its own built-in tray that can be adjusted to fit over the lap of any patron. The Janus Theatre runs 24 hours a day, every day, and caters to all tastes in film genres (with more mature content appearing at night). Every other day, the Janus Theatre runs an outdoor 'drive-in' style double feature! Bring a lawnchair or blanket to curl up with a loved one and enjoy the film! There's an outdoor concession stand open only during the times the double feature is running, but fear not, normal services in the Janus Theatre are still underway should the double feature fail to tickle any citizen's fancy.
G❧
Pub: Down the road from the Janus Theatre lies The White Rabbit, Luministi's own pub! Inside, patrons will find it to be a nice, cozyatmosphere with dark woods, benches, stools, and the occasional leather chair to relax in while enjoying the finest of stout beers! Of course, any other beer or alcohol is also available to paying customers. There's almost always a football/soccer match playing on the television so there's never a lack of entertainment! The White Rabbit also functions as an inn and has a small selection of rooms for rent in case its clientèle can't make it home in their inebriated state (and it might be best to stay the night, especially if being drunk leads to a rowdy/boisterous/destructive state of mind) or for the, uh, consenting patrons who wish to have a bit more privacy and take their 'conversation' elsewhere. There are only four rooms available at any given time, so if they are full-up, unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done. Citizens will be asked to walk home alone or contact a friend to escort them back. The pub owners request that all smoking is done outside and have provided chairs and tables under an overhang where that may be done. Anyone caught violating that will rule will face the smiling wrath of Audrey, and at one time, her brother Andre, who smiled less and was filled with more wrath. And that was saying something. Sadly, Andre was killed during some very unfortunate circumstances...
H❧
Town Pavilion: The park includes a large, white gazebo that's often used for various special events in the Luministi town calendar, but it is available to the citizens to rent and hold their own special celebrations or to simply rest and watch the goings on in the town square. The park rests next to the town's reservoir and river. In one spot in the park lies an impressive stone sundial, a gift from the Luministi Founders many, many years ago and one of several sundials seen throughout town.
I❧
Clinic: This posh clinic (with relaxing waiting room) is equipped with the latest and greatest medical technology available in the universe, as well as the finest recovery room facilities, such as a pool for water therapy purposes and sun therapy chairs. The clinic is run by Dr. Ernesto Resarci. His nurse Hope maintains the clinic in his absence and is ever-present and willing to help any citizen in need of aid.
Botanical Gardens: Just over the bridges leading south out of town lie the botanical gardens where residents can do anything from wander about aimlessly amongst the flowers to join your fellow botanists for a day's study of the world's greatest flora. Along the southern bank of the river lies the palmhouse, the gardens' pride and joy. The palm house, doubling as an arboretum, features just about every every tree imaginable, as well as exotic ferns and plants, some of which can be studied out back beyond the palm house. It also features amazing wrought ironarchitecture on the inside. Next to the palm house is a little gift shop where residents may buy your typical souvenirs and a relaxation and observation area where residents may rest and enjoy a refreshing cup of tea or coffee from the little café there.
The gardens include several different types of gardens featuring flora from all over the world, such as those seen herefrom Japan, a marshy area home to several large lily pads, and collections of flowers that make up not one, not two, but three different mazes located all around the impossibly large grounds for people to wander about in. Of course, there is a proper hedge maze about as well. There are somehiddengemsfound throughout the Luministi botanical gardens, like different carved topiary animals and statues. How there is enough room for everything in that small lot of land is anyone's guess!
M ❧
Treehouse Restaurant: The Chrysalis, set forty meters into the air, provides its patrons with one of the finest views around in addition to the finest dining experience Luministi can offer. When the restaurant isn't used as a venue for special events, patrons can partake in normal lunch and dinner hours and order any item off its extensive menu. All food is prepared in the cleanliest of kitchens with the freshest ingredients available. Nothing is too hard for the chefs of The Chrysalis.
N ❧
Mayoral Residence: The mansion known as the CaliginHouse has been in the family since the town's founding and has served as the residence for each incumbent mayor for just as long. The current mayor, Constantine C. Caligin does most of his work from home when he's not in the town hall, and with such refinements as an opulant kitchen, music room, exercise facilities, and a vast recreational room with state-of-the-art entertainment equipment, who can blame him for wanting to work at home? The highlights of the Caligin House are the exquisite gardens and lawn, and the ballroom. Mayor Caligin has been known to open up his home for public use in the case of wedding ceremonies and other celebrations.
❧ As of 05/14/11, the residence and the road leading up to it will not be available for exploration at this time. At times, the road leading to the mayoral residence will look like a mirage, shimmering in and out of being. Others, it will look like it doesn't exist at all, then at other times, it'll look like exactly as the other roads look. Regardless of the visual state of the road, anyone who tries to traverse it, or enter that space at all, will find that they've been turned right around and are now looking at the statue in the center of the town square. Keep on trying though, and you will end up stepping straight into the middle of the lake. How odd...and wet. Very wet.
❧ As of July 24th, the above corollary about getting into the Mayor's house is no longer valid. Residents may traverse the roadway and the house into the spacestation beyond as much as they want. If anything changes in regards to that, this page will be updated.
❧ Character Lodgings
J & K❧
Townhomes: All new citizens live in neighborhoods of one-story townhomes situated at either the west or east ends of town. Each citizen has their own individual single-bedroom home with the finest of amenities available including a state-of-the-art kitchen, comfortable living and dining rooms, jacuzzi bath, walk-in closet, in-house laundry facilities, and a solarium. Each unit is identical in terms of the contents, but the layouts mirror each other per division. All units come furnished with brand new furniture and there is even enough room in the entryway for the citizen's bike, so no storing them outside or leaving them about in the grass or flowers. As far as the gardens go, citizens may add their personal touch to them, but they are not required to maintain their look. A special team of gardeners handle that job and would appreciate if their hard work was not destroyed. Citizens may call upon the maid services from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. any day of the week. Between the divisions rests a heated community pool that is always, always clean and at the perfect temperature for those who wish to go for a swim at any time of day.
Each citizen is assigned a unit in either the east or west complexes upon their arrival to Luministi (through the use of AIM dice). In addition to the fully-furnished townhome, new citizens will all receive a brand new bicycle with a bell and flat rack in the rear for transporting larger goods, a vase of fresh flowers, and a welcome basket set on the coffee table. The full contents are as follows: an assortment of coffees, teas, and hot chocolate; sugars and creamers; fruits like apples, oranges, pears and pomegranates; candies, both sugar and chocolate-based; fruit preserves; small gourmet cheeses; crackers; baked goods from the local bakery, like one of their famous loaves of fresh bread, danishes, and cookies; a couple bottles of wine (only for those 19 or older); notices about trash pick-up and maid services; the letter from the mayor; map of the town (for those who like a paper copy. One is included on the CAT's databanks); coupons for free swag in the restaurants and shops in town; a bright yellow and violet mug and T-shirt with "Luministi Lions" printed on them; a first aid kit; and finally a lion paperweight. The basket is large enough that the citizens can--and are encouraged!--to use it for their laundry basket.
The most important item in the basket, though, is the citizen's CAT (which is detailed here). The moment the citizen touches it, it will activate and start up. Don't worry; it won't begin recording. It's just a general systems start-up and registration process that will explain to the citizen what it is and how it can be operated. The initials "C.A.T." are etched in tiny letters along one edge of the device.
Update (May 7th, 2011): Also, citizens returning from the end of the first season will find that any items they tried to bring back with them or procured from any friends will be waiting inside in their homes. This includes any food left over when they left Luministi, as well as items they received during the various plots, including the fliers for the 700th Luministi Town anniversary and the Luministi Citizens Award plaque. It'll seem like no time has passed at all...
Any citizens who wish to move in with each other must notify the town hall of their intentions as all business for the townhome estates falls under Miss Osculia's purview. (Note: the number of units is subject to change as the community population grows.)
Constantine C. Caligin is the mayor of Luministi. He is a friendly, charming man with salt-and-pepper hair and always dons an impeccably neat, expensive suit and tie. He is very dedicated to the citizens of his town, but for this very reason, he is frequently unavailable to them. He can be found in the town hall--unless he's wanted, in which case he typically cannot be found at all.
Miss Osculia, the mayor's secretary, is a very severe and business-like woman always found in neat suits and glasses. She works hard to help the mayor be successful and will do whatever she thinks is necessary to aid him--even if that means fending off the questions of pesky townspeople. She does, however, have a secret love for something that might just ingratiate her to you if you figured it out. She can be found outside the mayor's office in the town hall.
Verita, the town crier, is an energetic young woman with a twinkling smile. She takes her job as town crier very seriously, so you can rest assured that, as soon as she receives the news, you'll receive it, too. She does have a bit of a tendency to give more news than strictly what she knows, but you can't blame her for her youthful overzealousness, can you? After all, no matter what, she does strive for the truth! She can usually be found in the town square or relaxing in the malt shop.
Dr. Resarci, the resident clinic doctor, is a serious but kind man. He is firm but courteous with his patients. He is also generally very patient, though he can't abide it when patients try to hide things. He doesn't like to startle people unnecessarily, but he is very straightforward with his work and won't hesitate to tell things as they are. He can be found in his clinic at most any time of day, ready to serve.
Audrey, the barlady, has a quick tongue, brilliant smile, and a wry sense of humor. She enjoys talking and joking with her patrons, but if anyone is reckless enough to take more than they've paid for or start up a fight in her establishment, you might find that she's quite capable of breaking a hand or a face, as needed. She can be found in the bar on most nights and weekends, though she alternates with other employees at times.
Sheriff Dante Iussus, the former sheriff of Luministi has a kind face and gentle voice, but don't let that fool you into thinking he's a push-over or an incredibly nice guy. Far from it. Push him, he'll push back with three times the strength. Because of an unfortunate murder that happened while he was visiting some old friends, Mayor Caligin has appointed him as sheriff once more. He takes his duty very seriously, has the mouth of a sailor when he isn't too concerned about censoring himself, and has little to no tolerance for people trying to jerk him around. Fools need not apply when he's around. He isn't afraid to give you a swift punch in the face and play off the assault like it was your fault you got hurt. But he was raised right and won't ever raise a hand against a woman or child.
