I've just been told that I'm the only person in the Computer Lab who is researching networks at layer 2 (i.e., Ethernet). This intrigues me: I'm not seeing a particular lack of papers in the area, and also I thought the industry was moving towards doing an increasing amount of stuff at layer 2 (the transit provider I use certainly is). My grandfather, Jack Jowett, died earlier this afternoon at the age of 93 after becoming steadily more ill for the past few months.

He was a wonderful man in every way and will be missed by all who knew him.

I don't know how long thetrainline have been operated by Virgin Enterprises Ltd., but it does seem that they are now rather keen on sending me very bizaare and expensive routes just so I can be treated to a Virgin train for as much of my journey as possible ( Read more... )

I have just spent over three hours diagnosing weird faults on my DSL connection (remotely, I might add, over lossy and laggy wifi). In conclusion it appears that packets transmitted from my modem of exactly 89 or 90 bytes in length have the 89th and (if present) 90th bytes corrupted sometime before they reach the rest of the Internet.
