BCT hike: Map 2, F to the Mill River bridge remains
Much of today's hike was along eskers, with swampy bits down steep hills on either side. Fewer mosquitos than earlier this summer. Signage at a couple of places on the trail said "The beavers are winning" and suggested a detour around the bridge at Mill River. Perhaps "former bridge" would be a better description. St. Francis of Assisi and the cavy
One of the local churches had a pet blessing this afternoon. chiefoperator wanted to take Cuddles, so they were duly blessed by a holy water sprinkling deacon. (Cuddles was snuggled in the tall man's shirt, so sprinkling one dampened both.) Judging by the expression on the little pig's face, he is not a Catholic. There was a special on a one yard piece of IL019 bleached softened white linen for $1. I let temptation win and bought it. Before I washed it, it was allegedly one yard long (but I didn't measure) and measured at about 58 inches wide. (The website says 59 inches, now that I look at it.) BCT hike: Map 2, D to F
If I'm reading my map correctly, today's hike was entirely in Ipswich. I started by crossing Rt. 1, which was a little exciting. You almost can't see the trailhead on the west side of the road unless you know just where to look. A few steps took me from highway to woodsy enough that passing cars wouldn't see me. BCT hike: Map 2, S to C again, and on to D and the edge of Rt. 1
Back into Willowdale State Forest today. I don't know why, but it was a bit of a slog. I did see a tiny dirt colored frog on the path near where I started and a bright green fly. Lots of ferns. The section near East Street and the water lifted my spirits a bit. Might be time to retire these hiking boots; my legs and feet ached as I limped back to ( Read more... ) -
One rehearsal down
My first rehearsal as Waytes Captain. I thought about what we might play, drew up some notes, and then left them on top of my printer. My goal was to knock some of the summer rust off myself and anybody else who showed up and needed it. On the whole, it went pretty well. Next time, I might even remember to bring my notes with me. little ride
Piggy needed green pepper. Too hot to walk. I'm feeling out of shape, so I took the bike to Shaws. Hauled back a small pile of groceries. Didn't die. Not ideal weather for this sort of thing, but I did it anyway, so there. Round trip about two miles. -

Waytes Captain
Now that it has been announced on the guild's mailing list and in Council, I suppose I should record it here: As of July 1, I will be Captain of the Waytes of Carolingia. udalrich did it for ten years; I have a much more modest term in mind.
