Chapter 36
Ohno's smile had been the key.
The key Nino had been searching for ever since he had first seen Ohno again earlier in the evening, and now he had finally found it. The key to Ohno's heart. Afterwards it had been easy to seduce Ohno and now that they had reached his hotel room, holding hands all the way there, Nino finally felt safe again. He was in control again and knew that everything would go according to plan now.
“Do you want something to eat? I can have them bring something up, the food is really good here," Nino said happily, as he turned to face Ohno and put both of his arms on his shoulders, all the while smiling softly. His mask, perfected over the years.
Ohno only nodded slightly and made a sound Nino interpreted as yes. The sparkle in his eyes revealed how happy he was with the way things had turned out - at least that was how Nino wanted to interpret it.
Twenty minutes later they were sitting at the table, enjoying their meal in companionable silence. A silence that made Nino go over their whole night again.
'Everything turned out different than I expected it to, but ... but I'm still sitting here with him now. That's what I wanted, right?' he asked himself, but suddenly another bout of insecurity hit him.
'Of course that's what I wanted! I wanted to get him back, to touch him again, to be close to him. But... but I know that this is dangerous. That I have to be careful again and that I can't make any mistakes. Is this really what I want?'
Nino sighed involuntarily.
'What do I really want?'
He didn't know. No matter how often he looked at Ohno, with the danger he was in always at the back of his mind, he still didn't know.
Ninomiya Kazunari had reached a point in his more than 1,000 years where he didn't know what to do.
"You seem to be really far away." Only those words brought Nino back to the present and away from the chaos of questions and thoughts in his head. But his mask fell into place again quickly, hiding his surprise.
"I was thinking about how good it feels to finally see you again."
With a smile on his lips, Nino watched Ohno's cheeks turn red. Suddenly everything felt the way it had a year ago.
'I would love to tell you so much more, Satoshi. I want to tell you how good you are for me, how much you mean to me... how much I love you. But there would be consequences to that. And I don't feel ready for them...,' Nino thought sadly, but didn't let his sadness penetrate through his mask. He didn't want Ohno to know that he was sad, he only wanted him to see the happy and tender Nino he had acted out so perfectly the year before. He wanted to go back to that point, because in his eyes, it was the easiest way to stay with Ohno.
"I... like it, too. It was just surprising, you know? You were simply back. I think... I think I need some time to actually realize it...," Ohno murmured, his gaze trained on his hands. He only looked up when Nino got to his feet.
"Let me help you realize it...," Nino answered softly. And before Ohno knew what was happening, Nino was standing in front of him, taking his hands and pulling him to his feet, making sure that there was only the tiniest amount of space between their faces. Their food was long forgotten.
One hand held Ohno's head tenderly as the other wandered to his waist, drawing him closer until their bodies were touching almost everywhere.
"Let me help you...," he breathed softly, almost inaudibly, against Ohno's lips. A look at Ohno's eyes showed him how much this simple gesture had intoxicated him already. But then something happened that Nino didn't expect.
It was Ohno, not he himself, who took the last step and closed the space between their lips.
'Why... you?'
But Nino didn't stop to think, he wouldn't have been able to anyway; too many emotion were bombarding him when he finally felt Ohno's soft lips on his again. There was only a hint of pressure to Ohno's movement, but it was enough to cloud his mind.
It didn't take long for the soft, tentative kiss to turn demanding. All of a sudden, as if the simply touch had ignited the fire of their longing, they pressed their mouths together hard. And again it was Ohno who opened his mouth first and, a little hesitantly, licked Nino's bottom lip, asking for entrance. When Nino's tongue came out to meet Ohno's, this kiss, too, turned demanding.
Slowly Nino pulled back from Ohno and looked into his big brown eyes. Then he lowered his head again and let his lips wander from Ohno's cheekbone all the way up to his temple, leaving a trail of soft kisses in his wake. Ohno's moan was music to his ears.
But Nino stopped again quickly, leaning back to look at Ohno hesitantly. His eyes asked him if this was alright, if he was allowed to show him tenderness again.
Ohno nudged his cheek with his nose in response.
And Nino's lips went back to Ohno's temple, now wandering across his forehead and down to his cute little nose. He placed a last kiss on Ohno's nose before his lips found Ohno's again. Soon they were lost in a demanding kiss again.
'Oh how I missed touching you like this. How I missed feeling your lips on mine,' Nino thought as he dipped his tongue in Ohno's open mouth again. Desire pooled first in his chest, then lower, creating a pleasurable warmth within him. As if in a trance he maneuvered Ohno to the bed, never losing contact with his lips. A moment later he pushed Ohno back into the soft pillows and lay down on top of him. Their lips stayed connected.
'How far will you let me take this...?'
But before he could even finish thinking the question, he felt Ohno's hands on his waist, felt them slowly pull his shirt out of his pants, before slipping beneath the fabric. He sucked in his stomach when he felt Ohno's long fingers glide up his abdomen. He broke the kiss quickly. He just had to look at Ohno in that moment.
But he didn’t know what to say.
"Why are you looking at me like this?" Ohno asked quietly when Nino stopped moving. A shy smile graced the host’s lips and his eyes sparkled in excitement.
Nino couldn’t keep himself from returning the smile.
"It's nothing, I was just surprised."
Suddenly filled with a rush of happiness, Nino leaned forward again, seeking Ohno's lips while his fingers began to unbutton Ohno's shirt.
'He allows it... he wants... he... does this mean I won him back? I have my Satoshi back?' This thought caused his lips to curve up in a smile despite the kiss and Ohno must have felt it, because he too smiled into the kiss.
'I can't believe it...'
Nino could also hardly believe how fast their clothes had vanished, leaving him naked on top of an equally naked Ohno. His head had stopped functioning at some point during all of this; he had given in to the feelings and the blazing desire of the moment.
Unfortunately he hadn't heeded his mind’s warnings.
To be able to feel Ohno beneath him, to touch his warm body, to kiss his tender throat, all of it was much too pleasurable. His happiness and relieve were too strong.
"Nino...," he heard Ohno breathe as he licked the part of his throat he had been sucking on just now. The hot body beneath him pressed up into him, causing another bolt of pleasure to rush through Nino. He could hardly control himself.
Then he felt fingers glide down his back, he felt their feather-light touch on his skin and trembled in excitement.
Ohno was driving him crazy.
He could no longer control his desire, his passion. And Ohno didn't seem to want it any other way.
Their love play had been slow and tender. Nino couldn't remember having ever made love so tenderly before. But he couldn't remember ever having loved someone as much as he loved Ohno either.
Still breathing raggedly, they were now lying next to each other, the sheets covering their naked bodies, and looking at each other with glowing eyes.
"Don't think I do this with everyone," Ohno grinned, his cheeks still flushed. As soon as the words had left his mouth he cuddled closer to Nino, resting his head on Nino's chest.
"I sure hope you don't...," was all Nino could answer. His body was still flooded with too much happiness for him to really realize that he had just had sex with Ohno. With his Satoshi. With the man he had been afraid would hate him just a few hours ago.
Nino chuckled as he felt Ohno cuddle closer still. Too late he finally realized what he was doing.
What he was looking for. And what he didn't find.
“Nino…? I... can't hear your heartbeat," Ohno whispered hesitantly as Nino tensed beneath him.
At once it rose within him again, engulfed him until he thought he would drown in it.
Everything was back, everything he had tried so hard to forget; his existence as a vampire, his past deeds.
His loneliness.
A minute ago he had actually felt human. When their bodies had been connected, when they had moaned each other's names, he had been human. But now everything was back and more real than ever before.
'I... just wanted to forget for a while... why do you have to remind we that we can never work out? That you will leave me in the end... because of fear or mortality...' The thoughts burned him from the inside and filled him with endless sadness. He couldn't look at Ohno, who was now trying to find his heartbeat with his hand.
But at the same time he couldn't lie to Ohno, not after they had made love. So he stayed silent, hoping against hope that Ohno would just give up.
"Even... if I can't feel it right now, but... but..." Suddenly Ohno started to stammer, making Nino look at him again. He could see the redness in Ohno's cheeks again.
"But... do you think... it beats for me?"
Nino held his breath, trying not to let the surprise he felt in every fiber of his being show on his face.
'Why now? Why is he doing this now? Now when I am once again realizing that there can be no future for us...'
But he knew that he had to answer Ohno's question. Much too soon his mask had fallen back into place and he sent Ohno his typical, soft smile. But on the inside he wanted to run away.
"Are you trying to tell me how you feel about me?" he asked calmly, looking at Ohno tenderly.
Why did his mask have to be so perfect?
"Well... one of us has to start... right?" Despite coolly answering Nino's question with another question, Ohno sounded a little nervous. Nino couldn't blame him for it. The Ohno he had known a year ago never would have gotten those words out.
And maybe that would have been better.
"You're silly...," Nino whispered softly and ran his hand through Ohno's hair. He tried to delay the inevitable and allowed silence to settle over them.
'You can't have a relationship with him, Ninomiya! You know that! And you told yourself you never wanted to go through it again. Never again! So stop this! Stop it, goddamn you! Tell him!'
So he did.
“Thank you, Satoshi. Thank you for feeling this way," he said softly.
"But..." And the softness receded to leave only sadness in his voice, "... the two of us... can't have a relationship."
His voice grew steadily colder. Nino took another deep breath. He didn't want to look at Ohno anymore, but he knew that he had to. That he owed it to him.
"I'm not... a good person."
For a moment there was complete silence.
“What?”
And Nino could see something shatter in Ohno's eyes.
'I’m sorry… Satoshi... so very sorry...'
“What are you talking about, Nino? What… what is the meaning of this? Not a good person? Why are you not a good person? Stop talking in riddles! Damn! Please... stop talking in riddles..."
Nino looked away sadly, he could hear Ohno's desperation in every word. But this was the way it had to be as he had just seen; or rather talked himself into believing.
Slowly he closed his eyes and let his mask crack. He waited until it was gone completely before he looked at Ohno again, showing him his true face. His features hard and uncompromising, his eyes cold and ruthless.
"You love a mask... But the person behind that mask is someone completely different..." A dangerous lilt had crept into his voice and he could clearly see how much it frightened Ohno.
For a second nothing happened. Ohno just looked at him, his eyes wide in horror, unable to speak.
The he suddenly sat up and scooted away from him.
“Why...? That's... that's not true... You're lying. You're lying, right...? Why else would you have... with me... why...?" Ohno could only stammer, unable to form complete sentences.
"Why did you sleep with me...? I... I don’t believe this. I don't believe that it didn't mean anything to you! That can't be true!" Ohno spluttered indignantly and violently shook his head before looking at Nino again in disbelieve.
Nino knew he had to put an end to this quickly now. He had said too much. He couldn't go on this way.
He had to drive Ohno away for good.
That's why his gaze turned soft again, became the gaze Ohno knew.
"You mean something to me... or I wouldn't have taken care of you. You mean something to me, or I wouldn't have slept with you. I don't sleep with everybody. Just with people that are important to me."
Nino smiled.
"You're my sweet, silly boy...," he added, amusement rife in his voice, and looked Ohno in the eyes for a long moment.
Then his eyes turned cold again.
"Is that what you want to hear? That is my mask, that's the Nino I pretended to be."
It was almost over. Almost everything had been said. Only one thing was missing, a point that would show Ohno what he was all about without a shadow of a doubt.
"That’s not me.”
Then everything happened very quickly.
Nino didn't try to defend himself when Ohno struck the first time. He didn't dodge the fist that landed in his face. And he didn't move when the next blow fell on his chest.
"You bastard! Why are you doing this? Why did you do all this, you bastard...!" Ohno screamed suddenly, still raining blows on Nino.
"Sho was right! Everyone was right! Only I didn't see it! The whole time you were lying to me and I didn't see it!" Ohno's angry words echoed through the room. But then Ohno was suddenly calm. He stopped hitting Nino and just looked at him, hurt shining in his eyes.
"I wish... I could hate you..."
Slowly Ohno turned away, gathered his clothes and got dressed. And then, without looking back at Nino, he left the hotel room. He left Nino.
"Now... it's over...," Nino breathed into the quiet blanketing the room.
"For good..."
He closed his eyes tightly as he was overcome, leaned back in the strange bed and tried to fight against the tears gathering behind his eyes.
