Happy New Year everyone! 2013 is the year that RL happened and reading did not. With two thugs at home I expect RL will continue to happen, but hopefully reading will happen a little more as well. -

Have bought a house. Considering that I have bought two condo before this should not be new to me, but somehow the fact that this is a freestanding structure with a yard and exterior which I must pay attention to simply paralyzes me. arghhhh! The nice part of living where I do is that I'm right down the street from the library. The sad part is that the only area I get to see is the children's section. Well, let least I found this charming picture book today - Pish, Posh, Said Hieronymus Bosch The story could not be simpler, but the illustrations are simply marvelous. -

Now that I no longer take the train to work, it seems like even the smartphone can not help me post more ti LJ, alas. But right now I'm sitting in MVA, so i have a bit to catch up on my LJ reading. Was laughing over the undergraduate history illustrated that J posted when S leaned over and asked, have you read The cow essay?

the one thing about dc which no one told me is that the broadcast tv here is really entertaining. all the countries and organizations with agenda are on the airwave here. so we have two cctv channels, one devoted to the lavish documentaries about esoteric topics like the lost cities of Kuchi and Qun Opera, all subbed in servicable english. also ( Read more... ) -

Saw National Ballet of Canada's Alice in Wonderland at Kennedy Center. I went with some trepidation, but it turns out to be very clever and very British and very entertaining, there is some puppetry and some projection, but they're really used in a very thoughtful manner, perfectly complimenting the dance, and the Cheshire Cat was particularly ( Read more... ) -

Have finally started the Matthew Swift books. As always once I start reading it I wonder why it has taken me so long. Mostly I wish I had read it while I was still in NY, taking the NJ transit into the city, and then the 1 to Rockfeller center, and then walking though the tunnels underneath that feeds directly into my building. Have move into our new apt in bethesda, unpacked enough to keep thuglet and piglet amused ( which is surprisingly little) and the rest of us presentable, and had thanksgiving dinner. Go me!
Piglet had a chance to take his bike out on the trail, which he was never able to do in Newark, so I suppose there is something to be said for suburban living, ( Read more... ) -

Read whispers undergrounds over the weekend. Quite entertaining, and not at all what I was expecting, though I thought that the mystery was on the weak side. But one thing which I had kind of suspected before became clear as I read this book: the British conception of bureaucracy is exactly like that of the chinese.
