Snapesforte has removed her wonderful fic, Soul Play, from the internet. I dare say, that's rather sad - it was perhaps the best Snape-centric fic I'd ever read. One thing that has both astonished and irritated me with respect to the Death Eaters - and why Severus Snape joined - is the scarcity of decent explanations.

They amount to what? - Teenage angst, his friends were doing it, or he wanted power to punish the Mauraders. All reasonable, I suppose, but reading the same thing over and over dreary.

Another pet peeve:

Some youthful character from Harry Potter canon (Harry, Hermione, whoever else) either undergoes a traumatic experience or has some revelation and decides to go out and kill Death Eaters, or become really good at magic, etc. Oh, and they're really successful. And quickly learn more about magic than people 20 years their senior.

Why is this so much sheer suffering in Harry Potter fanfiction?

I go through the archives, and there are just so many of them.

Rape is popular.
Child abuse (of various kinds, including rape) is frequent.
Torture is rather more frequent than you'd expect.
