VGMAND 2015 Tokyo - Lost in Nippori (technically)

Jul 31, 2015 16:14

After seven years I'm back in Japan! Or at least Tokyo since circumstances and logistics meant that I can't go Hakone, Nikko and do a Kyoto Dolpa detour. Anyway when life throws you lemons, make lemonade for the Tokyo heatwave!

I am definitely aware that summer is hot but never expect to land in a heatwave, had to shuffle and change certain days accordingly to avoid exhuastion.

Note - For whatever reason you're visiting Japan (or any other summery country) in summer, just be wary of the heat and tour with precautions. You're there to enjoy yourself, not get a heatstroke.

Had the chance to see butterfly garden at Changi airport but evening time butterflies aren't active much.

I start my trip from Hanada

And took advantage of this ticket while I was there.

I was stationed in Nippori on account of liking the direct-to-airport stops being supposedly easier for me to navigate. Technically easy as long I don't confuse my Train station exits. XD My lovely hotel is a simple looking place that's pleasant and cosy inside, its suitable for lone, budget travellers who aren't keen on sharing dormitories with others. There's a Laundromat and sento in the neighbourhood that I found out about too late. Really put my hotel room to great use when I had to hide from the heat on some days where I was exploring the neighbourhood.

I am technically lost.

Until I am back in front of my hotel and learned to see the Ota Dokan statue as a location marker for my hotel during the first few days.

The other thing about picking Nippori was for the Nippori Fabric street, being a fabric fan and all. It was pretty fun to spend part of one afternoon of the trip walking down both side of the streets in search of an elusive fabric. Do note that while shops officially close at 6pm. By the time 5pm rolls around, stuff starts to get slowly push into the store. Yes I bought a length of cloth for one of my dolls.

What I love most during my stay was that on Sunday morning (2nd morning) I found Rokumon Soba (ごぼ天そば) Yes sir! I am a soba fan! To have a bowl of soba at 5.30am in the morning instead of having to microwave food is much appreciated. Much as I'm okay with combini food most of the time, a bowl of hot soba with topping of choice (tempura prawn/ vegetable/fish/onigiri) for breakfast before catching the train out for the day is always appreciated and will be my breakfast place for the whole trip.

Itadakimasu! I know there is Macdonald's in the area but soba wins most of the time.

I'm also a fan of tempura so having Tendon Tenya downstairs is much appreciate too. Kitchen origin is an interesting one. You can get your regular bentos on offer as well as add on side dishes by the weight for your meals. What can I say, I like my food simple when I'm exhuasted at the end of a day.

Combinis have nice coffee drinks for breakfast since I can't take coffee(and therefore didn't try out the coffee places) after 3pm

I'm gonna end up with series addiction when I get home.

Nippori tracks separate Nippori and Yanaka.

No rail pass this time. Just riding the bus for fun on some days

Is it just me or does someone doesn't belong here? And would Solid Snake be in this game?
