VGMAND 2015 Tokyo - Praying for health at Togenuki Jizoson

Aug 05, 2015 15:59

First off, I'm technically Buddhist and the main deity i pray to is Guanyin (or Kannon or however you refer to said deity). If you want to put a religious factor in for me to tour Japanese shrines, its in part to visit the Kannon shrines (some, I can't go all so I just throw in the tourist factor). Long story short, think of my various shrines trips as a form of energy recharging/release.

Sugamo... duck nest, why do they call it Duck nest? Was there duck farming in some distant past? Or was it duck nesting ground before people move in? Or that the ducks came by because it was a seed trading post?

On Saturday evening I was at the Sugamo station end of the street and the place looks shut down around 9pm. This area is either the tail end (no pun intended) or the middle. The street felt kinda narrow in feel when compared to Yanaka. I am sort of here during opening hours literally!

Note that I'm here around Natsu Matsuri/Tanabata season to be able to see seasonal decorations.

The tram station is kinda near this shrine to Sarutohiko

Warm day it was, there's ice cream and drinks opposite the temple, buy some tea powder or senbei too. Would you like some lucky red underwear?

Specifically I came by to Kogan-ji after reading up about the Togenuki Jizo. There was suppose to be a sort of similiar practice in Shibamata, but I end up coming to Sugamo instead.

The summary to various folktales was that if you have an ailment you wished to be cured of/ have some relief from.

- Go to said temple
- Buy a piece of white cloth from the vendor near said Arai Kannon statue
- Queue up
- When you at statue, take a ladle of water and pour it slowly over said statue
- think what you want cured of or have relief from
- use the white cloth to wash aflicted area (mine is the left eye, I forgot about back issues and feet blisters)
- leave white cloth in container nearby

Whether you believe this or not is up to you. I had a fall in May which caused me to see some lens flare in my upper left visual field when I look up to strong lights, when in muted light it appears as a patch of oily pixels/scales(for lack of better words). Four months of eyedrops later, it show some improvement after my trip. I'm still waiting for my followup eye appointment in October.

And from Sugamo, I eventually managed to get back to Nippori via tram-bus connection. Seriously wondering if I have some kinda of aversion to taking the train or something.
