Chapter 01 Chapter 02 Chapter 03 Chapter 04 Chapter 05 Chapter 06 Chapter 07 Reita didn’t talk much as he walked home from school with Ruki that afternoon. Since lunch, Reita had constantly been thinking of what he should do about Uruha. Ruki seemed to understand that Reita had things occupying his mind, because he left the silence as it was. When the two finally reached Reita’s house, they parted ways and Reita walked inside. After being greeted, Reita’s mom said, “I thought we talked about not snooping around in your sister’s room,” with a small smirk.
“I didn’t!” Reita insisted with a whine. “I haven’t been in her room without permission in forever!”
“Well she told me that some of her things weren’t where she had left them,” she said as she looked at Reita knowingly.
Reita hoped he was right in assuming Lorenzo had returned the “borrowed” items and then told his mom, “I promise I didn’t sneak in her room! She probably just forgot she moved them.” As an afterthought, Reita added, “Besides, you know she looks for stuff all the time and doesn’t find it until she’s checked the same spot like fifty times!”
His mom chuckled as she nodded and then said, “Alright, alright. Just remember how she gets sometimes. She hated when you used to fiddle around with her things.”
“Seriously! That was years ago! Before I actually had a life more exciting than playing with toy fire trucks!” Reita defended. “She always blames stuff on me!”
With a roll of her eyes, she said, “You two are always fighting! Let’s just let it go. If she says anything about it again, I’ll tell her you didn’t go in her room… alright?” Reita nodded and after his mom had dismissed him, he hurried up to his room. He closed the door and turned around to see the usual scene of Lorenzo lounging on his bed and working on what seemed to be a crossword puzzle.
Dropping his bag, he sat down at his desk chair with a sigh and said, “Have I ever mentioned how much I appreciate having a fairy around to help me out?”
“Well, including just now, you’ve mentioned it a total of… one time,” he said with a smirk as he averted his gaze from his crossword puzzle and instead focused on Reita.
“I need your help, Lorenzo. I have no idea what to do.”
“Is this about your angry friend?” Lorenzo asked.
Reita nodded and explained, “I don’t know what to do! He likes Uruha, but so do I! And even though right now Aoi hates my guts, I still think of him as my best friend and band mate.” Reita paused and sighed heavily before adding, “As much as I want to work things out with Uruha, I don’t want to hurt Aoi either… especially if it ends up with me bleeding.”
Lorenzo suggested, “Let’s flip this around for just a minute.” Reita nodded slowly. Continuing, Lorenzo asked, “What if it had been your angry friend who was pursuing the person you liked? What would you do or how would you feel?”
Reita thought about it briefly and then answered, “I’d be bummed, probably.”
“Would you beat up your angry friend because of it?” Lorenzo asked.
Shaking his head slowly, Reita said, “I don’t think so. If Uruha wanted to be with Aoi, then… I’d just want him to do what would make him happy.” Reita bit his lip for a few seconds and then he shrugged while adding sadly, “It would really suck, but if Aoi is who would make him happy… then… I’d want him to be with Aoi.”
The two sat in silence for a minute; Lorenzo watched Reita thoughtfully as Reita stared at his floor. Turning his attention back to his crossword puzzle, Lorenzo broke the silence as he asked, “What’s a four-letter, English word for a score of zero in tennis? Starts with L…”
Reita turned to look at Lorenzo curiously before he answered, “I don’t play tennis.”

The next day at lunch, Reita walked into the cafeteria and immediately noticed that Uruha was sitting by himself. Reita frowned slightly as he walked over towards Uruha’s table, wondering why Aoi wasn’t sitting with Uruha. Because he had occupied himself with eating his lunch, Uruha hadn’t noticed Reita approach. Reita gently tapped Uruha on the shoulder, causing Uruha to yelp in surprise. Once he recovered from his surprise, Uruha smiled at Reita. Eyes widening as a thought suddenly occurred to him, Reita suggested, “Hey, why don’t you come sit at my table today?”
Uruha gasped softly and then asked, “Is th-that okay? Th-they w-wouldn’t mind?”
Reita smiled and rolled his eyes, saying “Of course not!” Uruha’s smile brightened as he started to gather his lunch together. “Do you need any help?” Reita had asked, but Uruha just blushed and shook his head. As they started to walk the short distance to Reita’s table, Reita asked, “Where is Shiroyama today? Did he not come to school?”
Uruha shook his head as he answered, “N-no, he’s here. Sometimes he spends lunch on the roof. If he has stuff on his mind, he likes to be alone.” Shrugging as best he could while holding his lunch, Uruha offered a small smile.
Kai and Ruki looked up at the two as they approached their table. Reita said, “I thought it would be cool if he ate with us today. Is that alright?”
Both Kai and Ruki smiled and responded with, “Sure.”
Smiling back at his friends, Reita then pulled a chair out for Uruha to sit in. Blushing, Uruha set his lunch on the table and mumbled a “Thank you” as he sat down.
After he sat down next to him, Reita said to Uruha, “You already know Kai, but this is Matsumoto Ruki.” He turned his attention to Ruki and said, “Ruki, this is Takashima Kouyou.”
After the polite bows, Ruki then rolled his eyes and said, “It’s about time!” Turning to Uruha, Ruki said, “I was wondering when this idiot would think to introduce us,” as he jutted a thumb in Reita’s direction. Lowering his voice, Ruki asked, “He talks about you all the time, you know?” Reita blushed and kicked Ruki’s leg under the table, hoping to shut him up.
Drawing Ruki out of his glaring at Reita, Uruha blushed as he asked, “R-really?!”
Not able to stop his grin, Ruki leaned towards Kai and quietly said, “He really does get cute and embarrassed about Reita, doesn’t he?” and earned a smile and enthusiastic nod from Kai.
Noticing Uruha’s cheeks becoming even redder, Reita hissed at his friends, “Would you stop embarrassing him?!”
“Oi! I think your face is redder!” Ruki retorted with a snort. Even if Reita’s face hadn’t been redder than Uruha’s, it definitely was after Ruki’s comment. The rest of lunch had been-much to Reita’s relief-free of embarrassment. Reita was also relieved to see that everyone seemed to be getting along. Uruha was gradually becoming more comfortable around Reita and he seemed to fit in perfectly with Ruki and Kai. He was still shy and quiet, but he laughed at their stupid jokes and seemed to share a lot of the same interests. Reita figured Uruha would be accepted, but Reita now knew that anything could happen-Ruki, Kai, and Uruha not getting along with each other being no exception.
As the school day had reached its end, Reita said his goodbye to Kai and then hurried off to meet Ruki. He had hoped he might be able to walk Uruha home, but he needed to talk to Ruki about it first. Spotting Ruki at the entrance to the school, Reita walked over to him and asked, “Ruki, would you mind if I walked Uruha home today?”
With a roll of his eyes, Ruki answered, “Yeah, I guess I’ll let you work your magic today.” Looking at Reita sternly, Ruki added, “But don’t think this means you can ditch me all the time!” Reita smiled gratefully at Ruki, who also waved before turning to walk off of the school property.
Reita moved to lean against an outdoor wall with the school’s entrance still in his sight and started to watch for Uruha. He hadn’t had a chance to ask Uruha about walking home together yet, so he was hoping to catch him as he left the building. He didn’t have to wait long before he saw Uruha walking out of the building. Hurrying over towards him, Reita called out, “Uruha!”
Uruha’s eyes widened as he heard Reita calling out his nickname and he turned in the direction his voice had come from. Walking towards Reita, Uruha asked, “R-Reita! What are you still d-doing here?”
Smiling sheepishly, Reita said, “I wondered if maybe I could walk you home today…”
Uruha asked in surprise, “You w-waited to w-walk me home?” Reita blushed lightly as he smiled. Uruha smiled back and he said, “I-I’d really like that.”
Their walk had started off in an awkward silence, but then to Reita’s surprise Uruha broke the silence by saying, “I w-wanted to thank you, Reita.”
Furrowing his brow in confusion, Reita gently knocked his shoulder against Uruha’s as he asked, “For what?”
Taking a deep breath, Uruha said, “There was one day when I was asked a question in class…” he trailed off. Uruha suddenly stopped walking. Reita quickly noticed Uruha was no longer walking and he also stopped, looking at Uruha curiously. Sighing, Uruha said, “I don’t have good social skills. I don’t know what’s wrong with me! I get so nervous when all the attention is turned to me and I just freeze up!”
Reita thought of how strange this was. He was so used to Uruha’s confidence on stage that he sometimes forgot that Uruha could be very shy at times. Just like now. Just like Uruha had been since Reita started his second life as a high school student.
…Just like Uruha had been the night he tried to tell Reita he loved him-the night Reita went into inconsiderate-jackass mode. As startling as this realization was to Reita, he wanted to let Uruha finish what he had wanted to say. So he ignored his thoughts for right now and nodded at Uruha to show he was listening.
Continuing, Uruha said, “I was asked to answer a question… I don’t even remember the question, but the answer was photosynthesis.” He chuckled bitterly and then tugged at his hair as he let out a growl of frustration. “Photosynthesis! It was such an easy question, Reita! I knew the answer was photosynthesis!”
Reita was confused at what Uruha was trying to tell him, but he was shocked by Uruha’s sudden change in attitude. He was speaking louder than usual and he hadn’t stuttered at all. Uruha hadn’t said anything again and Reita was afraid to be the first to speak. If Uruha hadn’t finished what he was trying to say, Reita wanted to be sure he gave him that chance. Not to mention, he was downright curious where this story was leading. Luckily Reita didn’t need to break the silence because Uruha finished explaining. “I froze. All I could think of was the way everyone had turned to look at me… waiting for me to answer… and I froze.”
“But that stuff happens, Uruha,” Reita said softly. “You shouldn’t worry about that.”
Shaking his head, Uruha said, “A guy called me an idiot. I don’t even know who it was, but I remember him clearly saying, ‘what an idiot! How can he not know the answer?’”
That pissed Reita off. “And the teacher didn’t do anything?!” he asked angrily.
Uruha shook his head as he looked at the ground. “The teacher didn’t hear him say it,” he answered. After a few seconds had passed, Uruha softly added, “But you heard, Reita.” Reita’s face softened as he looked at Uruha-waiting for him to say something else. Uruha slowly lifted his gaze from the ground. Instead, he looked at Reita and smiled with what was unmistakably appreciation, “You heard him say it and I doubt you remember saying anything at all… but I’ll never forget what you said Reita.”
“W-what did I say?” Reita asked quietly.
Uruha laughed and then answered, “You told him ‘Just because his head isn’t as big as yours doesn’t make him stupid. Brains take up less space than egos.’”
Reita couldn’t pretend he wasn’t pleased at hearing that he had thought of such a witty comeback. He grinned at Uruha and was glad to see Uruha grin right back. “Thank you, Reita,” he said. “It might seem small to you, but you have no idea how much it meant to me.”
