From this article, I learn many theoretical things concerning cultural awareness such as the three qualities covered in cultural awareness, the four primary categories of understanding or awareness, the three components included in culture teaching, the four kinds of culture conflict, and the two general views toward culture awareness. Also, from reading this article somehow it gives me some clarification that, indeed, cultural awareness is really important to be taught to foreign language learners in teaching and learning activities. The failure that many foreign language learners faces when learning the target language is most likely caused by the lack of cultural understanding that they should acquire from teaching and learning activities that they have already experienced. It may be due to the language teachers’ lack of cultural knowledge, the time allowance for culture teaching in each lesson, or even the educational system being used itself.
That is said, foreign language (FL) teachers’ role in the development of FL learners’ cultural understanding is really significant. It is on them that the learners’ succeed is depend, though not one hundred percent. It is their own ability and creativity to try their best to conduct a class in which learners’ cultural awareness can be optimized. Hence, teachers must also have cultural awareness for them to be able to introduce it to their students.
