One of my favourite things about life in Tokyo is how easy it is to escape the city and go explore the countryside, without needing to rent a carJust train hopping and getting off at random stations is sure to lead to interesting experiences. The Ghibli museum came up pretty frequently as a MUST SEE when I first visited Japan in 2007. I never went. 1. People who had been there made it sound like the museum was located in a really inconvenient, hard to find location. 2. The game was finally released in Japan last Friday, and it's been fun to see how it's changed the world around me.

There are fireworks festivals all over Japan during summer. Some offer tickets for premium seats, but most have huge open spaces for people to bring leisure mats and picnic blankets and make a whole day of it. For free.
