I think this is pretty straightforward. If a machine can do a job much better than a human, the machine gets the job. That includes Presidents, and congressmen, and generals and fighter pilots. Incentives
I've been assigned to read "Drive" by Daniel Pink as homework for work. I've made it through Chapter 1 so far (go me). But, it has reminded me of a couple problems with incentives that I have encountered recently.

Perspective
Worked 15 hours today. Didn't get a lot done. Spent the drive home wondering if I would know when to quit. Then I remembered that my Dad used to work 16 hour days all week and his job was a lot crappier than mine will ever be. New Lows in Procrastination
This week I made the powerpoint slides while sitting in the meeting in which I was to present them. I think the only way to top that is to actually type them as I'm presenting them. On the plus side, it appears that I did not accidentally sell my company for $1 or create an international incident via typo. -
Take a Number
Left work Friday with 0 unread messages at 6:30pm
By 11:30am Monday, had 95 unread messages. Knocked that down to 45 by 2pm.
It's 7pm and I have 72 (no, 73!) unread messages.
I used to laugh at my boss for being 3 days behind on his email. -

is wondering how many friends it takes to Ascend. -
Yay
We have a new baby girl. Born 0759 PST, weighing 7lbs 2 oz, and measuring 20" long. Everyone's fine. She fed right away, which was cool. Plus, Chica is much better off this time (so far). Apparently, last time there was poor communication about what she was supposed to feel (sensation yes, pressure yes, pain no), so she got enough drugs for a ( Read more... )
