Ambling back through town, I was delighted, thrilled and secretly vindicated to spot the sign "Fairy Dental Service" adorning a dentists.

It wasn't until about 200 yards later that I realised I'd mis-read "Friary Dental Service".

I've moved up a size in painting, now working on 24"x24" boards. It's a whole different ball-game ! from having to walk to the other end of the studio(*) to see it properly, to estimating the amount of paint needed for coverage, it's taking some adjusting to. ... still in the theme of monochromatic palettes, here's my nearly abstract work 'Courtship of the Pheonix', a contemplation in Red. The inclusion of the birds gives some dimension to the otherwise abstract shapes, and a graduation in both temperature of colour and of motion crossess the canvass from top left to bottom right.

Well ... inspired by roses, anyway. Artist Keith Edmier created a sculpture of a dozen roses out of red acrylic; most noticeable is that they are the same red all the way through, including the stems and the ribbon holding them together. The result is very evocotive, mixing as it does both the symbolism of the colour and the natural colour of roses ( Read more... )

Boccioni is an italian futurist painter and sculptor, who's bronze-cast "Unique Forms of Continuity in Space" greatly impressed me. It needs to be seen in 3D to be appreciated properly. To me the idea that it most strongly evokes is the synthesis of form and movement; the anatomical acuracy of the sculpture is surprising in it's detail, whilc each ( Read more... )
