Chapter 9: Truth and Desperation

"You're getting married?!"

Kazuya gave Pi an incredulous look.

He visited him in the forest cottage. It was officially theirs now since the King had insisted that it may be put under their names. Palace guards had accompanied him as per both the King and Jin's instruction but the guards were courteous enough to stay outside the house, in a respectable distance so that he and Yamapi could talk privately.

"Where in my sentence did I say I'm getting married? I just said that I and Jin had admitted that we love each other."

Yamapi scoffed. "Pft. Same thing Kazuya. Soon, marriage is where that will lead."

"There's no talk of that yet. Anyway, that's not the point," he stated since Pi was getting off track. "The important thing to consider is that Jin doesn't know that I'm a Whisperer. I've stopped talking in his mind since he came to get me here. I've also refrained in using my magic..."

"Wait. You're hiding it from the Prince?! Why?"

"Jin loathes Whisperers, Pi. It pains me to hide what I am from him but I'm afraid, no not even that. I'm terrified. If he finds out I'm a Whisperer, he'll be devastated, I know he will. He'll push me away and I can't live with that Pi. I can't live with him hating me."

His tears started to flow. The mere thought of those kind and loving eyes turning into contempt and disgust was making his heart break.

Pi wiped away his tears. "You're stronger than this Kazuya, come on stop crying."

Kazuya took in a deep breath. "Yes, you're right. I'm sorry I broke down."

"Did you talk to the King about this?"

"I did but he's just as lost on what to do as I am."

"Your Majesty, Prince Jin doesn't know that I'm a Whisperer."

"Unfortunately, yes. I thought he knew since he claimed to see you in his dreams and he did see you perform magic the day I brought you here." The King shook his head.

"Didn't you tell him, your Majesty?"

"I want to but his possible reaction worries me. The coronation is in less than two weeks and call me selfish but the kingdom needs a level-headed leader by then, something Jin surely wouldn't be the moment we tell him about your identity."

"I'm sorry for asking this but why are you terribly worried about this? I had wanted to tell the Prince about me for quite some time now but I thought I should consult his to you, your Majesty, first. That's why I asked to see you."

"Jin won't take this lightly. He detests your kind. It vexes me to say this but he himself had led hunting troops for catching Whisperers."

The King's voice and expression was gentle and sympathetic but it did nothing to ease the shock and hurt that Kazuya felt at the moment.

He couldn't believe that a man so full goodness such as Jin is capable of hating anyone so much to the point that he wanted them dead.

"W-why?" His voice broke.

"A family Jin had grown to love was killed by a Whisperer," the King said gravely.

"That's impossible! My kind won't kill innocent humans, we simply can't."

"What do you mean?"

"You humans have a skewed view on history. I won't say anything else." He still couldn't trust the King completely.

"Very well. But it would probably best if we keep your identity a secret from Jin for awhile."

Yamapi was silent as Kazuya finished narrating what happened.

"There's something I want to ask you Kazu..."

"What is it?"

"Do you still want to be with Prince Jin? There's a chance one of your family members died on his hands."

"He hadn't been able to catch any of us. He doesn't even know what to look for. He didn't recognize me as a Whisperer, remember? He was probably apprehensive about the risk of killing someone innocent by mistake. Besides, my blue dusts accepted him as a good soul. Even if they didn't, I don't think I can let him go."

Yamapi smiled warmly. "You really love him, don't you? Everything will be fine. If he loves you even as half as you love him, he'll see reason."

"I hope so."

-------------------------------------------------

It was early morning when Jin persuaded Kazuya to go to town in disguise to "cheer him up". No matter how well Kazuya hid his distress, Jin was binded to him so his feelings was open to the prince.

Kazuya agreed. If nothing else, it would ease the Prince's mind.

The town was abuzz with the usual activities but to a person who hadn't always visited the place, it was quite entertaining.

They giggled like little kids as they kept their head low so no one would recognize them.

It was unnecessary of course, since dressed in workers' clothes, no one would had suspected that the Prince was among them. But it was so much more thrilling to sneak around.

"Lovely high quality pearls for sale! Come all and buy these pearls!" A street merchant enticed, holding pearls and showing them to passerby's.

Kazuya stepped closer to look at the pearls, curiously.

"Kazu?" Jin followed him and held his hand.

The merchant noticed them. "Oh why don't you buy this for your lovely wife, sir? A beautiful lady deserves beautiful jewelry, wouldn't you agree?"

Kazuya blushed.

It was inevitable that anyone would mistake him for a lady since Yamapi had dressed him in women's garment. He told them it was less suspicious if they pretended to be a young couple. But Kazuya had seen the glint in his friend's eyes. It was obvious that Yamapi was teasing him for his feminine looks. Again.

"Kazu, do you like this?" Jin asked, fingering a simple but elegant pearl necklace that Kazuya had been looking at earlier.

"Mother would have loved to have that," he whispered.

He didn't remember much about his real mother but one of his few memories of her was that she had always stared wistfully at the jewelry human women wore.

"3 gold coins for that, Sir. You won't find a deal as good as that," the merchant persuaded.

"I'll buy it. I'll give anything my wife desires." Jin was looking at Kazuya intently as he said that, making Kazuya's blush grow darker.

"Ah, to be young and in love," the merchant commented pleasantly as he received the coins Jin gave him and handed them the necklace.

"Jin, you didn't have to buy this," Kazuya said when they were already far from the merchant.

"I know. But I want to. You never told me about your mother, though. Where is she?"

A loud commotion in an alley not far from where they were standing prevented Kazuya from answering.

"Ruki!"

"Sister! Save me!"

"Please, I promise I'll be good! Just don't hurt my brother!"

Kazuya and Jin's eyes met and they hurriedly rounded the corner.

They found themselves in a small dirty street.

A loose circle of people were crowded and looking at something.

When they went closer, they saw a boy around 5 years old being held up by a burly, mean-looking scowling man and his older sister who looked to be only 11 on the ground, wounded and dress torn at places.

"What happened?" Jin asked a bystander.

"Punishment to a misbehaving servant," came the bored reply.

Kazuya was repulsed as he took in the expression of the people looking on. Some were mildly interested but none was truly concerned.

How could they just look on and do nothing while children were clearly being oppressed?

He glanced at Jin but the prince had a stunned look on his face. He was sheltered and kept in the palace all his life so he probably didn't even know this kind of ugliness existed in their kingdom.

When the burly man threw the boy towards his sister roughly, Kazuya acted without thinking and sprinted to the children.

He managed to catch the boy but the man's ire turned to him instead.

"Who are you?!" When the man looked at his face, the man grinned creepily. "Well, looks like I got myself a new servant. Come here girl, I'll pay you more than I pay this good for nothing trash."

The moment the man reached for him, blue light appeared on his body, coiling around his body protectively.

The people gasped and ran in fear, shouting "Whisperer!". The burly man and the children ran as well.

"Y-you're a Whisperer?" It was Jin who asked.

"Yes, he is, dear Prince." Lord Ryo, who had just arrived after being informed of the situation, answered. He turned to Kazuya. "We meet again, Whisperer."

"Why?" Jin couldn't seem to say anything else.

A simple question but Kazuya understood.

Why did he hide it from him?

Why didn't he tell him?

Why did he have to fall for a Whisperer?

"I'm sorry," he said sadly to Jin. His tears clouded his vision but he could feel the betrayal Jin was feeling.

"I guess this time, the King won't say anything. The Whisperer did try to kill a human, after all," Lord Ryo muttered.

He didn't resist when Lord Ryo tied his wrists with a rope very tightly. That rope was once soaked in a Whisperer's blood so it was powerful and no Whisperer could escape that rope if it's tied to them. It dug on his wrists painfully, but he didn't complain.

Lord Ryo led him away and Jin stood there, not doing anything to stop what was happening.

This time, Kazuya didn't blame him.

I do love you Jin. I'm sorry.

He hoped Jin believed his reflected thoughts.

And that he would forgive him someday.
