“I’ll give you a few minutes out of the kindness of my heart for your upcoming short lives.” Joon leaned forward and pressed the stop button on the elevator, halting them in between floors somewhere.

“Thank you for the courtesy, Joon.” She turned to Taemin fully and before she said anything further he started talking.

“When we get off the elevator we’re heading for the stairs.” He heard Joon snort a laugh from where he was leaning in the corner, trying to let them have their moment. Taemin side-eyed him, “And we can reschedule when it’s a better time.”

“Reschedule for never you mean.”

“Yeah.”

“If that’s all…” Joon trailed off when Sayu shook her head. He shrugged and tried to find something interesting to look at.

“This is the best time to meet with her, but it would make me feel more comfortable if you accompanied me. Trust me with this.” She stared straight into Taemin’s eyes, full of seriousness and confidence, as much as she could muster. He tried to glare at her but soon gave in and sighed.

“Fine, but this is going to be bad.”

“That’s what I was telling her. So ready?” Joon looked to both of them and they nodded, so he pressed the button. “Now we’re even, girly.”

When they reached the top floor, the doors opened into a pent house. Now it made sense why Joon was laughing, they were already inside the meeting place once they stepped outside the elevator. The room was spacious, with a round table setting, circular couches wrapping around a small area where some people were gathered.

There were about five men in various outfits lounging around and they all were quiet, looking over towards them. Joon waved and stepped forward, “I lucked out with a two-for-one,” he mused as he spoke to no one in particular. Sayu and Taeming stepped outside the elevator and remained there until the doors shut and one of the men walked over to them.

“Jessica’s in the back room so get moving, and you, you can wait with us.”

Taemin looked like he was going to object but Sayu quickly spoke, “Thank you for the hospitality, but do you mind if he waits just outside? I can guarantee he won’t be trouble.” She smiled politely up to the man and at Taemin.

The man narrowed his eyes to Taemin, “I’ll check with Jessica first, so I guess I’ll lead you.”

As they were walking down the longer-than-they-thought hallway, Taemin whispered to Sayu, “Why are they listening to you?”

“Because I’m neutral, it wouldn’t benefit anyone to kill or otherwise maim me, nor to not listen to reasonable requests. They know who you are but this meeting is supposed to be common ground. They don’t even eat here.”

“Wait, so you meet here often?” Taemin crossed his arms, suddenly unsure how Sayu made it this far. They were stopped at a door now and the man gestured for them to wait outside while he went in.

“It changes location every time but it’s governed by rules just like The Council, except its set up to benefit communication more so than hierarchy.” Sayu stood against the opposite wall to the door, while Taemin leaned on the wall just to the side of it. “They set up the spot and I get to meet with them unhindered by the usual push-and-pull. Though not a lot of vampires are willing to do all this.”

They both looked to the door as it swung open and the man turned to Taemin, “She said it’s cool if you come in, too.” Sayu smiled to Taemin and stepped forward, the man moved out of the way to let her in, and Taemin followed, eyeing the man as he brushed by him. Once inside, the door was shut behind them and after a short electric sound Taemin fell forward into Sayu. She turned to see Taemin fall on the ground unconscious and another man holding up a taser, waving.

Shit.
