“No! Rose! Please!” Chris struggled further against Jack and Ianto. He could see Rose struggling to breathe, Owen rushing around her, trying to calm her as the fog finally leaving her body.
Jack finally managed to get a handle on Chris and marched him up the concrete steps and into his office. Hot tears poured out of Chris’s eyes as he watched Rose disappear behind the wall.
Jack ordered Ianto, Gwen and Toshiko to stay with him. They stood by the door and watched as Chris walked up and down the length of Jack’s office. He held his head in his hands as he continued to pace.
“Can’t you do something to help her!?” He shouted at the trio, they jumped slightly at his words as he hadn’t said anything in the last four minutes. Chris watched as the three in front of him looked at each other.
“There’s nothing we can do for now, Owen and Jack are with her. They’ll try their best.” Ianto spoke before looking back at Gwen.
“He’s right, there’s nothing Jack won’t do to make sure she’s ok, Owen too.” Gwen moved towards Chris and put her hand on his arm, smiling lightly at him. She motioned him to the chair in front of Jack’s desk and waited for him to settle before moving away slightly.
“The fog was having quite an effect on her; there may have been some complications as it was leaving her.” Tosh smiled, hoping to give Chris something to think about. She shifted next to Ianto; they were all a bit unsettled of what was happening to Rose. Chris could tell they wanted to know nearly as much as him.
Ianto looked behind him and saw Jack come up from the autopsy bay. He didn’t look happy. Ianto took the opportunity to pop out of the door watching Chris stand up in surprise.
“Jack, what’s happening?”
Jack looked at Ianto; he looked at Rose and Owen in the autopsy room then back again. “It’s not good.”
“What does that mean exactly?” Ianto moved closer to Jack and saw how tired he looked.
“We’re losing her. Owen’s down there now trying to steady her but it doesn’t look like she’s going to last much longer.” Jack’s voice broke slightly. “This isn’t right. She’s young, too young. Maybe I made the wrong choice.”
“Jack, you couldn’t have seen his. We didn’t know how badly the fog was going to affect her.”
“But it told me she would be too weak without it, I should have listened. Now she’s going to die.”
Ianto reached for Jack’s arm and brushed his thumb over the cotton shirt. “The fog had to leave her, we had no idea what it was capable of doing.”
“Jack! Come here!” Owen called from the bay, they pair looked back at each other before rushing to the steps. Owen looked up at them and nodded his head.
Jack left Ianto at the steps and made his way to Rose.
