The boy only had one bag to his name. He had an old acoustic guitar that was strung around his shoulder and on his round head, he wore several hats-to conserve space he said for all the other crap he jammed into his “luggage” which consisted of an old duffle bag.

When he and Fuwa showed up at the apartment, Ruki’s nerves were all over the place. He knew Isao was inside and he was afraid that his presence was going to incite a fight between the two older men.

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” he asked Fuwa nervously. His big black eyes glittered in the light that poured in from the wide window down the hall. The apartment building was rather nice, much better than he had expected. It was about 5 stories high, had its own lobby and a security guard.

“He is more open-minded than you give him credit for,” Fuwa said turning around and giving the boy a comforting smile.

Ruki wasn’t yet used to seeing his face again. His smile sent warm trickles across his skin.

Fuwa opened the door and they walked inside.

The apartment was rather spacious. To their right was the living room, a wide room with long windows decorated handsomely with paintings, sculptures and calligraphy. There was even a Piano which immediately caught the young man’s attention. To the left of them was the kitchen. It had marble counters and low hanging lights. Next to it was the dining room. In its center was a darkly painted mahogany table with beautiful crafted chairs. A gorgeous painting of naked youth graced the back wall of this room, framed as it was by two large windows. Down the hall from there was a bedroom, no doubt Fuwa’s and Isao’s. In the far rear, there was the bathroom-which Ruki could not quite see. Across from the bedroom, there was a study of some sort. Wandering a little bit down the hall, he could see that all the wall space in that room was taken up by tall bookcases.

“Isao?” Fuwa called taking Ruki’s bag from him and placing it near the chic white sofa.

“I’m here!” Isao called, opening the door to the bedroom and stepping out. He looked much different than Ruki remembered. For one, he looked thinner, grey and instead of having long dark hair, he wore instead this strange colorful turban like thing. Since he was at home, he walked around in a red flannel housecoat.  “Darling!” he said walking up to Fuwa and grabbing his face with both hands planted a wet kiss on his lips.

Ruki gaped at him. Although everything about his appearance: his skin, his lack of hair suggested that of a weary cancer patient, his manner was anything but. In fact, he moved around like a Queen in a Drag show.

“Look what the cat dragged in,” he peeped suddenly seeing Ruki there.

Smiling uncomfortably Ruki managed to say “hi,” before looking down ashamed.

“I remember you,” Isao said, dragging his eyes up to Toru’s face. “Well? Why is your favorite child of all time here?” he asked in a monotone voice.

“He’s homeless,” Fuwa answered.

“OHHHHHHHHH!!!” Isao let out dramatically. “Let me guess you want him to stay here with us. Baby, darling don’t you think we are a bit too old to adopt?” he tilted his head.

“Isao…” Fuwa said, folding his arms. “He needs a place to stay and I think having him around would be nice.”

“Nice?”

“The only people we have over are our old friends, queens, aged artists, critics and the occasional poet, don’t you think it will be nice to have someone under 30 around?” Toru said with a smirk.

“You make it sound like I invite over the living dead! Pff Critics” he said cynically with a sigh. He rested his hands on his waist and sized up the small boy. “Well, he is certainly cute as a button. I can’t promise that my friends won’t try to touch him. Just warning you Cinderella, yeah I’m talking to you,” he lifted up a bony finger and pointed at him. Ruki looked up timidly. “Keep away from all the Queers especially the ones that seem like they can still get it up.”

Fuwa let out a laugh. “Isao, please,” he smiled.

“And I am going to make you clean out the stove and make my bed 8 times until its free of wrinkles and then I am going to make you lick my feet clean,” he joked.

“Stop,” Fuwa laughed and lightly slapped him.

“I am NOT your fairy godmother, just so you know Precious,” Isao smiled. “Oh and last time we talked and you threw a fit…none of that because you ain’t a baby anymore and I am going to treat you like the grown woman you are. I’m the Queen here. I’ll let you be Princess but I rule the roast.”

“What does that make Fuwa?” Ruki smiled, feeling a little bit more welcomed. He could tell that Isao was pulling this act to make him feel at home.

“Hm? I would say King but I think peon serves him better,” he laughed.

Fuwa turned and smiled at the boy. “I have a futon in the closet. You can sleep on that if you’d like or the couch. Right now, the extra room is a study but we can rearrange things and turn that into a room for you,” he smiled.

“Thank you,” Ruki bowed.

“Now, I know you want to take a shower so go ahead. The bathroom is right there,” Fuwa pointed. Ruki nodded enthusiastically before smiling.

“Thank you,” he said again as he made his way back there.

When Fuwa looked back he could see Isao watching him with narrowed eyes.

“What?” he asked him.

“I see what you are doing…” he answered in all seriousness.

“I’m not doing anything.”

“And if I didn’t love you, I’d kick that kid out right now.”

Fuwa sighed. “Excuse me?”

“Toru, honey the worst thing about this disease is leaving you alone.” Fuwa attempted to say something but Isao cut him short “And I am okay with you wanting a family. I understand that. I know how much you love that boy. How could I not? You have a picture with him on your wall. Look, I don’t know exactly how-”

“Isao!” Fuwa interjected shocked.

“I don’t care Toru,” he said slowly and forcefully. “I don’t care if you love him like a son or like something else. I don’t care. I just don’t want you to be alone when I am gone.”

“Isao don’t talk like that.”

“Don’t tell me how to talk. I’m not a fucking idiot, Toru,” he stared him straight in the eyes, his gaze unfaltering. “It’s my life, my death and I’ll talk about it any goddamn way I please. I’ll be nice to him,” he stood up straight. “For your sake because I want him to stay around for you when I am gone but don’t ask me to treat him like he’s my son. I don’t want to look at him. I don’t want to spend time with him or eat dinner with him.”

“Isao, Ruki is a good kid.”

“Ruki is here to replace me, okay?”

“He is not,” Fuwa answered forcefully. “I can’t replace you, Toru,” he could feel himself trembling. “We’ve been together for 40 years, Isao…I will always love you,” he looked down. “Ruki is here because he needs someone to look after him. He’s still a child in many ways. He needs a home. He needs someone to watch over him to make sure that he doesn’t hurt himself. He isn’t here to replace you Isao.”

He didn’t say anything in response to Toru’s words. He wasn’t sure if he quite believed him. Even if it wasn’t his intention to bring the boy over for the reasons Isao suspected, he believed that in the end, that is what would happen. After he died, Ruki would fill the hole that he had left inside of Toru and even though that filled him with a burning jealousy that he couldn’t begin to understand, he knew that if Toru was going to continue on without him, he couldn’t do it alone.

“Alright. All I am saying is he is YOUR charity case,” Isao turned around and walked back into his room.

Kai almost slammed the door to the staff room behind him he was so stressed out. D who had been relaxing back there, looked up as he came in.

“Sorry,” Kai said, his frustration evident in his voice. Unlike the rest of the restaurant, the staff room actually had AC. Exhausted, Kai threw himself on the floor and leaned against the wall. “Ughhhhhhh….” He moaned painfully.

“Are you okay?” D asked.

“Just having a bad day…”

Inside the staff room was an old couch that no one sat on-except for Hajime, he was the only one who didn’t mind the springs that shot up and threatened to sodomize any who dared to take comfort there. There was also a white table that D was resting his legs on at the moment, several fold up chairs, a metal cabinet, a small black tv and random boxes sprawled about.

Getting up, D walked over to Kai and sat down next to him. “Want to talk about it?” he asked.

“I feel really stressed…” Kai looked at him from his half-closed eyes. “I just want to relax…that or beat something.”

“Here,” D said grabbing something from his pocket. It was small, thin handmade cigarette. “Got this from Hirano actually,” he chuckled and shook his head.

“What is that?”

D’Marcus looked at him like he was insane. “Its marijuana,” he answered in all seriousness.

“Why do you have marijuana?” Kai sat up straight.

“I smoke sometimes so does Hirano.” D pulled out a red plastic lighter. “I take it you never smoked before?”

Kai shook his head no. “Um…isn’t it illegal?”

D’Marcus merely laughed. “Look, when I am stressed, I smoke. It helps me relax. It calms my nerves.”

“I’m not sure…” Kai said taking off his baseball cap. His damp black hair frayed out crazily around his head. The cool air felt good against his scalp.

“Just try it once,” D brought the small cigarette to his full lips and lighting took a hit. “Here,” he said as he held the smoke inside.

Kai tentatively took it from him, looking at D skeptically.

“I guarantee it will make you feel better,” he smirked.

Kai brought the cigarette to his lips and inhaling it, felt it go straight to his head. He wasn’t even a tobacco smoker.

“Hold the smoke in,” D said.

Kai coughed instead. And in seconds, he could feel himself becoming giddy. For some strange reason, he had the urge to laugh. All his stress seemed to go down.

D taking the cigarette from him took another hit. Kai suddenly starting giggling madly. Reaching out for it again, he inhaled it once more. As soon as the smoke escaped his lips, a long string of cute giggles poured outward. He threw himself against the wall and just giggled nonstop, his eyes shut tightly as he slapped his leg.

D smiled as he watched the small guy descend into a pure mass of uncontrollable laughter.

“Feel better?” he asked.

“He he he he yeee-ahhhh,” Kai smiled. “This is baaad. I shouldn’t do this….it’s baaad,” he giggled and scrunched up his nose like he was apologizing.

D who was normally a rather guarded and uptight person, felt more relaxed as well. He started laughing and lightly pushing his giggling companion.

“D~,” Kai whined cutely. “Haru likes you…she doesn’t care about me,” he shook his head back and forth dramatically.

“I know,” D said taking another hit and handing it to Kai.

Inhaling it Kai went on “then on top of that, it’s a sauna out there and my friend came by…” he rambled. “and his fiancé! Man…she was….NOT what I expected,” he slapped his leg and giggled. Lifting up his legs, he started slamming his knees together cutely.

“Oh yeah…what was she like?” D said resting his head against the wall.

“Rude…but whatever. I was just shocked because he was madly in love with our one friend, you know?” Kai mimicking D, rested his own head against the wall.

“I thought you guys went to an all boys retreat?” D gave him a weird look.

“Ye-ahhhhh we did. We did. We did but…out of the 5 of us…well, we are like Fleetwood Mac…You know them?” he laughed.

“No…I don’t listen to that white people shit,” he spat and started laughing as if it were the funniest thing in the world.

“Whaaaaaaa?” Kai giggled. “What do you listen to?”

“Black people music,” D laughed as if the whole dialogue and situation were hilarious.

“Like Rap?”

“Yup,” D nodded enthusiastically. “And R&B. Shit like that,” he sighed and put the blunt out.

“Well anyway…there are five of us and back in the day, Aoi was with Uruha and Reita was with Ruki.”

“And you were all left out,” D laughed as if it were hysterical. “Why were you all gay?”

“I don’t think they are gay…I don’t know…I think…if you love someone…that doesn’t matter, you know. The power of love!” he announced raising a small pale fist into the air.

Yeah, he was high.

“Poor Kai…they didn’t try to find someone for you?”

Kai shook his head no and started laughing.

“Man, that’s crazy…and you are okay with that?”

“Yeah, why not?”

“They didn’t try anything with you?”

“Well….yeah…” Kai giggled. He shouldn’t be talking like this but whatever, he felt free and at ease. “One time, Uruha had me jag him off and then he…”

“WHAT?!”

“Yeah, then he blew me. It was actually the first time I ever did anything with anyone….YIKES!” Kai threw his hands up cutely and giggled, pursing his shoulders up and knocking his knees together. “Then, Aoi that bastard…I lost a bet with him and he made me kiss him.”

“And you are totally cool with that?” D asked, surprised.

“Uruha…he had problems so…it’s alright. He wouldn’t try anything now, I’m sure. WAIT! I don’t know we haven’t really really talked since but we will…you know we are supposed to get the group together again tomorrow. Aoi is just a trickster…” he laughed. “So messed up but from my memory he was the best kisser I’ve kissed…” he giggled at the idea of it. “Not that I am going to tell HIM that. That would just make his day and he wouldn’t drop it,” he giggled and stuck his tongue out slightly, biting it.

D just watched the side of his giggly cute face. “So…you’ve kissed a guy before?” he raised his eyebrows.

“Mhm,” Kai looked at him, his big eyes looked even bigger.

“And you are completely okay with that?”

“I don’t see there to be anything wrong with two men being together,” he giggled and pulling his knees up, hugged them. “It’s not like you are different person after it happens. It happens and then,” he shrugged.

“You aren’t scarred?”

“Scarred!” Kai laughed, his adorable dimple appearing charmingly on his face. “What’s the big deal?! It’s nothing reallyyyy.” Slapping D’s leg dismissively he said “Get over it.”

“So…” D’Marcus looked down, a crazy idea coming to him. Building up his courage he asked “So, if I kissed you, you would just forget about it?”

“Huh?” Kai laughed. “D! What? Why?” he giggled and shook his head. “That would be random.”

“I’m not saying I’m going to do it, I’m just asking if you would mind…”

Kai stared at him, considering it. Would he? He couldn’t concentrate on the question too long. He was in such a good mood that he felt he could forgive the world. “I wouldn’t care,” he giggled, yet again.

D completely not in his right mind, perhaps lulled and tempted by the other boy’s incessant and charming giggles, moved closer to him. Kai didn’t back up. In fact, once D’Marcus started to move, he knew what he was going to do. He sat there waiting for it.

“Hold still,” D said. His words caused Kai to start giggling all over again. He didn’t stop until D’s full lips were pressed up against his own. Gently and slowly, D started to kiss him. Uncharacteristically, Kai let go and let himself be controlled, allowing D to softly put his tongue into his mouth, allowing him to pull him closer.

It felt good, strangely good-better even than his kiss with Aoi. D was more skilled; he kissed with the intention of pleasuring the other person. He treated Kai’s mouth as if it tasted better than anything in the world. As he kissed him, Kai started to giggle with delight which only caused the other young man to want to kiss him more. Kai was too cute, too adorable. With enthusiasm, he started to kiss him deeper, caressing his tongue with his. Biting his bottom lip, he softly kissed his chin before going back to his mouth.

Kai, perhaps under the influence of his high or because of the other man’s skill, started to kiss him back. D took his reciprocation as a sign so he moved closer to him and putting his hand on his knee, attempted to pull them a part. Kai feeling him touch him there, moved back quickly. “Uhhhh…” his eyes grew wide. When it finally hit him what he had been doing, he rapidly got to his feet. “I should get back to work,” he said, avoiding D’s gaze as he turned around sharply and left.
