Chapter 19: Exposed secret

After they managed to clear the misunderstanding to Nino, Sho and Masaki started to hope that everything will be fine from then on. Sho knew that he still had to talk to Miki one more time to be sure she understands that there never will be more than friendship between them. When Sho told Masaki what happened when they met, the younger boy pouted his lips frustrated. He was sure that she just faked being sick but Sho being a gentleman in his heart, insisted that she wouldn’t do something like that.
But whatever was the truth about the girl’s behavior, the boys had to realize that they were too naïve again…

“Change into some more proper clothes. We’ll have guests soon!” Shuntaro-san ordered the boys when they came down the stairs on the next Sunday afternoon.
“We were about going out to catch a movie in the cinema. I’m sure those guests coming to see you anyway, so we’re not needed…” Sho said shrugging but when he wanted to pass next to his father, the man grabbed his arm.
“They’re coming to see you especially…” he said meaningfully.
Masaki’s eyes widened at this; he immediately caught up on who these ‘guests’ could be only… Sho seemed to come to the same realization and didn’t seem to be happy about it all either. ‘That girl…’
“Don’t you think you should tell me beforehand when you’re inviting someone to see me? Don’t treat me as if I’m some pageant at the zoo…” he said as he tried but failed to get free from his father’s grip.
“I’m telling you now” Shuntaro said with finality in his voice, leaving no place for further arguing. “Now go and change your clothes! You too, Masaki-kun!” he added looking at the younger boy sternly and pushed Sho toward the staircase.
Reluctantly the boys obeyed to the order.
“Sho, do you think…?” Masaki started but he couldn’t find the courage in himself to voice his fears so he just looked at his brother with those sad, puppy-eyes of his.
“It doesn’t matter” Sho said firmly and took Masaki’s hand gently, entwining their fingers. “You said yourself. As long as we’re together… Do you remember?”
Masaki nodded silently.
“Good. Don’t forget it ever. We’re in this together, okay?” he asked then raised Masaki’s hand to his lips, kissing it softly. “Now, let’s get ready for this stupid parade…”

Just as the boys stepped out their respective rooms, clothed in dress slacks with shirt and tie, they heard the doorbell rand, indicating their guests’ arrival. Sho made an unhappy face at this which earned him a chuckle from Masaki.
“Sho, come here! Your tie is crooked…” he told to his brother and reached out to fix it for his brother. “There you go, handsome!” he said with a cheeky smile when he finished.
“Arigatou” Sho smiled back at him and pecked the tip of his nose. “Let’s go! The sooner we go to see them, the sooner we can hope they’ll leave…”
The older boy went ahead when Masaki nodded but the younger didn’t follow him immediately. Despite his smile, he had a really bad feeling about this visit, and he couldn’t get rid off this feeling no matter how hard he tried. He wished if he could ask Sho to sneak out the house secretly and run away but he knew it was impossible. He knew that his brother was too polite - despite his short temper and usually rebellious attitude - to do that. He sighed deeply as he walked after the older boy. If he couldn’t escape whatever will come, he wanted to be at Sho’s side at least…
But being at Sho’s side, literally, was out of the question.
By the time Masaki reached the living room, his brother was seated on the couch between Miki-chan and her father. And if anyone would bother to look at him closely - next to Masaki, of course - they would’ve seen how unhappy he was with his seating. Shuntaro-san, as expected, sat in the armchair next to his boss and they were chatting animatedly. Masaki sat on the floor at the other side of the small coffee table in front of his brother and smiled at him encouraging. Sho immediately beamed back at the younger boy.
“Oh, Masaki-kun! Hisashiburi!” Miki chirped when he noticed her former classmate.
“Yeah, it’s been a while indeed” the boy looked at her and his smile immediately seemed to be less honest than just a few seconds before. “How have you been since we last met?” he asked politely, not that he was actually interested in the answer or cared at all, but as long as the girl was talking to him, he could keep his attention away from Sho…
Not much later Ayako-san brought in a tray with tea and small cakes on it and started to serve it. Shuntaro-san seemed to wait for her presence only cause he spoke up now.
“So that we’re all here, we can start, can’t we, Kobayashi buchou?” he said with a stupidly polite grin on his face.
“Oi! No need to be so formal, Sakurai! We’re not in the company and soon we’ll be family, right?...” Miki’s father said and laughed good-naturedly.
The effect of his words was immediate. Miki’s face lit up delighted while Sho, Masaki and Ayako-san looked shocked instead. The woman was the first who dared to speak.
“Anata!...” she started staring at his husband indignantly.
The man stared back at her hardly, his eyes saying ‘He’s not you son. Don’t interfere!’
Sho tried to keep his temper under control, while Masaki fight to keep his tears from falling. He didn’t want Sho to have to marry that girl but he was also afraid to speak up or to see what will happen if Sho creates a scene… But mostly… he was afraid of loosing Sho…
“So as Kobayashi said it already, we decided that Sho and Miki-chan should marry…” Shuntaro-san started but his words were interrupted by the doorbell.
“Don’t bother, I go, get it! Just keep on talking…” Masaki said immediately jumping up from his seat ad sped for the front door. Anything but having to sit there and listen to their death-warrant…

Sho looked after him worried. He’d swear he saw tears in his beloved Masaki’s eyes and it just made him more pissed. Why can’t his father finally stop making decisions in his place?! Shuntaro started to talk again but Sho didn’t pay attention to him at all. He wanted Masaki to return; his presence was the only thing that would keep him calm in this situation. Even if he didn’t want to marry Miki, he didn’t want to cause unnecessary trouble or hurt anyone’s feelings with careless words… But he knew that might happen if he looses his temper… Instead of his father’s speech, he tried to listen to the muffled noises coming from the front door.
“Sho-kun? Why don’t you go and check what takes so long for Masaki?” Ayako-san said silently to the boy, looking at him completely understanding his feelings.
Sho shot up from his seat without wasting a second and tore his arm from Miki’s grip - ‘When did that girl take it at all?’ he thought indignantly.
“You’re right! It must be a door-to-door salesman. Knowing that he can’t say no to anyone, I’d better go and send them away before he spends all our savings…” he said as an explanation to their guests and his father then left the room hastily before anyone had the chance to stop him…
“Masaki?” he called the younger boy who stood at the crack of the door. At his voice, he tried to close it quickly but whoever stood outside, stopped him and pushed the door open forcefully. “Aiba-san!” Sho gasped surprised when he spotted his beloved’s father.
“Oh, the knight in shining armor just arrived to save the damsel in distress…” the man said mocking looking at Sho, while Masaki still fought to force the door closed even if that was obviously useless since the man was stronger than him.
“Tou-chan! Leave now, please!” the boy said looking at his father with pleading eyes but the man didn’t even look at him.
“Since you seemed to forget our little chat, I came to remind you…” Aiba-san said ignoring his son and fixed his eyes on Sho.
“I told you to leave us alone! I thought that was a clear enough answer” the Keio student said sternly.
The ramen chef shrugged.
“As you wish, brat…” with a firm push at the door he intruded the house, not even looking at his son who stumbled into the wall, wincing in pain. “I see you have visitors parading here… Well, that just makes things more fun…” he said with an evil smirk and marched in the house…

Sho rushed to Masaki to help him standing up while he tried to grasp that man’s motives. But all he could think that the man found pleasure in ruining others’ life - including his son’s… - once his own life was ruined…
“Are you okay?” he asked the younger boy and when Masaki nodded they both hurried after the boy’s father.
“Tou-chan!” Masaki cried out as his father entered the living room and grabbed the man’s coat, trying but failing stopping him.
The other four people in the room looked up surprised at the noise that the two boys and the man stumbled in the room with.
“What are you doing here?” Ayako-san asked standing up and looked at her ex-husband. “Please, leave! This is a family event…”
“Don’t make such a fuss, bitch!” the man told her while shaking off his son’s grip finally. “I have some chatting to do with your new husband…”
Shuntaro-san stood up as well at this.
“I can hardly imagine anything that you and I can have to talk about…”
“Oh, trust me, there is!” the chef said with a mocking laughter.
“Tou-chan!”
“Aiba-san!”
Sho and Masaki both tried to stop what they knew was coming but it seemed everyone in the room ignored them.
“Ehm… we should leave so you can talk…” Kobayashi-san said standing up and pulling up his daughter as well. He really didn’t like the idea of his girl marrying into such a problematic family but he’d give Sakurai the chance to settle things on his own. Miki was clinging onto his father and looked around the room scared. Even Sho’s presence wasn’t enough for her not wanting to get out of the situation as soon as possible.
“Oh, no, I don’t think so. You might want to hear it as well… You might want to know about the other side of the precious Sho…” Aiba-san looked at Kobayashi now.
“What about my son?” Shuntaro-san snapped impatiently.
“Senpai…” Miki whispered barely audible and turned her big eyes toward Sho.
“It’s not just about your son… It’s about this useless kid as well…” Aiba-san said motioning toward Masaki.
‘No, no, no! Please, don’t!’ the said boy closed his eyes tightly shut, he tried to say something - anything - to stop his father, to stop everything, their life crumbling down around them but the words stuck in his throat.
“I guess you had no idea that these two fags were fucking behind your back…” he said nonchalantly as he was talking about the weather only though his eyes talked about utter disgust.
Masaki paled in an instant. ‘He said it…’ He opened his eyes and looked at his step-father with panicked eyes, then turned his glance at Sho next to him and finally back to his own father.
“Tou-chan… why?...” he breather out but it seemed none heard him.
Shuntaro-san looked at Sho.
“What’s the meaning of this, son?” he demanded.
Sho closed his eyes for a moment and took a deep breath. ‘I promised I won’t betray you ever again. I’m not running away anymore…’ he thought. Opening his eyes, he looked back at his father while he took hold of Masaki’s hand boldly.
“We love each other with Masaki!” he announced; shocking mostly everyone in the room with his words. “He’s the only one I’ll ever love…”
“Sho…” Masaki said silently and looked at him with teary eyes. He never felt so loved than at that moment as Sho declared their love, holding his hand…
“Is that really true?” Kobayashi turned to his employee. “And you wanted my daughter to marry to such a… I’m outraged!... This is… disgusting! Between brothers!” the man shouted pointing at the boys.
Aiba-san was obviously satisfied as Hell broke loose in the room.
Shuntaro-san tried to stutter some excuse to his boss but Sho’s voice interrupted him.
“Kobayashi-san!” the boy said on an angrily raised voice. “You know nothing about Masaki or me so stop judging us! We might be both man or share the same name but we’re not related by blood. We’re not committing sin with our love!...”
“Enough! I’m not willing to listen anymore of this non-sense!” the man shouted back interrupting Sho. “We’re leaving! Forget what we talked previously. There’s no way I’m agreeing to such a marriage…” he said addressing his last words to Shuntaro-san. Then he grabbed his daughter’s hand and they marched to the door.
“Miki-chan! Wait!” Sho said grabbing the girl’s arm with his free hand as she was about to pass next to them. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…”
“Don’t touch me!” the girl shrieked and ripped her arm out of Sho’s hold. “You’re disgusting! You both are! I’m sick of you!” she yelled and ran out of the room, her father following her with a final indignant look. Shuntaro-san ran after them…

Aiba-san snickered openly.
“Well, this was quite a scene. I’m glad I happened to be here to witness it…”
Masaki let go of Sho’s hand and cautiously stepped closer to his father.
“Tou-chan… How could you…?” the boy asked looking at his disappointed.
“How could I not? That whore of your mother just walked out on me when our family had trouble and got into bed with the first rich guy that came in her way!...” he spat the words. “Why would you deserve better life than me when you belong to the dirt where I am…” he said grabbing the hair on his son’s nape shaking him roughly then pushing him to the ground hardly.
“Stop it!”
Both Ayako-san and Sho shouted and rushed too Masaki.
“Stop it! You’re mad at me, fine! Hit me! I don’t care but don’t you dare raise your hand on my son ever again!” the woman yelled and put her arms around the boy protectively.
“It’s your fault that he turned out such a useless weakling! Cause you always treated him as a princess…” Aiba-san gritted his teeth in anger.
“Enough! Get out! Get out!” Sho shouted jumping up, pushing the man roughly toward the door. “You got what you wanted, now get out of our life and leave us alone or I call the police!”
The man stumbled a few steps till he regained his balance. His eyes burned with anger but left without saying anything else…

Sho let out a deep sigh. He helped up Ayako-san and Masaki then gathered the boy in his arms.
“Are you okay, baby?” he asked whispering into his ear.
“Yeah, I’m fine…” Masaki nodded but before he noticed, tears started to pour down on his face, soaking Sho’s shirt.
“Sssh…!! It’s okay… It’s over now…” he whispered soothing to the boy while he rubbed his back to calm him down.
The loud noise of the front door being shut close made them jump in surprise. The next minute Shuntaro-san dashed in the room angry.
“Do you have any idea what you did? You ruined everything!” he yelled at Sho immediately. The Keio student just looked at him coldly and tightened his protective arms around his boyfriend. “I told you, I’m not tolerating this in my house! You’re not my son anymore… Get out of my house! Both of you! You brought shame on the Sakurai name… From this day on, we have nothing to do with each other…” he said on that dangerously low tone before he stormed out of the room, shutting the door closed behind him…
Masaki jumped startled in Sho’s arms at that.
“I’m so sorry, Sho…” he whimpered into the older boy’s neck. “It’s my entire fault that you… I’m so sorry…”
“Hey, hey, that’s not true! You remember, right?” he asked and kissed Masaki’s temple before letting him go to look in his eyes. Masaki nodded slowly.
They both looked at Ayako-san who still stood there a few steps from them with a soft smile on her lips.
“Kaa-chan,… are you mad at me?” the younger boy asked silently.
“Why would I?” the woman smiled at him warmly. “As long as my sons happy, I’m happy too” she said then kissed both boys on their cheeks…
Not much than an hour later Sho and Masaki finished packing up their most necessary belongings, getting ready to leave the house for ever.
“Mom,… will you be okay?” Sho asked as she escorted them to the door to say goodbye to them. He wasn’t sure it was a good idea to leave her alone with his father.
“Don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine. Just give time to your father and he’ll get use to the situation as well…”
Sho highly doubted that but he didn’t start a fight over it.
“Just take care of yourself, okay? And call us if anything happens!” he asked and hugged his step-mother. “Thank you for becoming my mother…” he whispered silently.
Masaki watched them with a soft smile, then went to embrace his mother when Sho let go of her.
“I’ll miss you, kaa-chan…” he said, trying to fight back his tears again.
“It’s not like we’ll never meet again… And you’ll always be my boys…” she said gently.
Sho smiled at her one more time then took Masaki’s hand and they walked out…

“Ne, Sho… What will we do now?” Masaki asked silently as they walked farther and farther from the house that was once they home.
“I don’t know” Sho said honestly as they stopped and he looked at his beloved Masaki. “Just don’t forget your words: as long as we’re together, we can overcome anything…”
