Chapter 01 Chapter 02 Chapter 03 Chapter 04 Chapter 05 Chapter 06 Chapter 07 Chapter 08 Reita didn’t know how much more he could take. Every chance Aoi got he glared menacingly at Reita. In the week following Reita’s walk home with Uruha, Reita had been pinned to a wall twice, physically distanced from Uruha (which was the nicer way of saying Aoi pushed Reita away) too many times to count, and had been called various insulting names… such as “slime ball.” It was really frustrating!
Although he hadn’t forgotten about Lorenzo suggesting he put himself in Aoi’s place, it was very difficult for Reita to imagine Aoi accepting Reita’s feelings for Uruha. Especially when he was busy pushing Reita away from the object of his affections. Aoi’s overprotective attitude was getting to be ridiculous!
“This sucks,” Reita said, pounding his fist on the cafeteria table.
“I love your mom’s rice balls!” Kai said in defense of Reita’s food.
“No! Not my lunch! I meant it sucks that Shiroyama is basically guarding Uruha! I can’t even talk to him if he’s around!” Reita explained in a whiny tone.
“Takashima could always come over here or something, though! What’s up with that?” Ruki asked.
“He’s not exactly the type to approach a person, Ruki,” Kai explained matter-of-factly. “He’s way too shy for that!”
“That’s it. This is fucking stupid!” Reita said, standing up.
“Oh, shit,” Ruki said, shaking his head at the thought of what trouble Reita was asking for. Reita paid no attention to his friends and simply walked over to Uruha’s table. Each step Reita took was heavy with determination.
He stopped in front of Uruha and Aoi. Smiling reassuringly at Uruha, who was looking at Reita anxiously, Reita said, “Hey Uruha.” Uruha relaxed and grinned brightly at Reita while he gave a small wave as a hello. Reita’s facial expression transformed into one that clearly said he was pissed off as he turned to look at Aoi. “You and I have some talking to do.”
“I can’t imagine what I could possibly have to say to you,” Aoi spat.
“Just think of this as bonus time for insulting me, alright? Let’s go.”
------------------------------
Reita had led them to a secluded area of the schoolyard where he knew they’d have privacy to discuss things. He suddenly stopped and whipped around to face Aoi, demanding, “What is your problem?!”
“You! You are my problem!” Aoi said, glaring at Reita.
Although he was unsurprised by the vague answer, Reita wasn’t any less angered by it. “What have I ever done to you, huh?!”
“I don’t fucking trust you!” Aoi spat in response.
“Why?!” Reita whined. His anger had passed and now he just felt desperate for Aoi to understand how he felt.
“Why not?! What reason do I have to trust you?” Aoi asked, narrowing his eyes at Reita. “How do I know you’re not just playing some prank on him or… or using him for sex or something?!”
Reita looked at Aoi sadly and shook his head as he softly replied with, “I would never hurt him on purpose.”
Aoi’s angry face softened into one of concern as he said, “He’s too innocent! It would never occur to him that you might not be sincere. Do you know how crushed he would be if… if…” Aoi sighed in frustration.
“If what?” Reita prodded.
Aoi’s voice cracked slightly as he answered, “If you turned out to be an asshole, Suzuki. It would break his heart.” He sighed and then added, “He likes you so fucking much. I don’t understand why, but he does.”
Reita wasn’t sure how he should feel right now. It was so wonderful to hear that Uruha liked Reita, especially if it was Aoi he heard it from. He knew it was certain if it was coming from this person who hated sharing the same air as him. As wonderful as it was, knowing Uruha felt that way, Reita still hurt for Aoi. It was even more painful now that Reita saw how sad Aoi looked.
“He’s my only friend,” Aoi spoke softly enough to almost be considered a whisper. “I would hate myself if I let anything happen to him.”
To say Reita was shocked at the feelings Aoi was displaying would be an understatement. However, he saw this as an opportunity to make a winning move in chess. “You know,” Reita started, “You’re actually a lot like my friend Ruki…” He wasn’t just saying that to appease Aoi, either. Both Aoi and Ruki were very quick with comebacks and weren’t afraid to say exactly what they were thinking. Ruki might be less intimidating, and definitely less violent, than Aoi… but Reita saw their similarities. After a brief pause for thought, Reita suggested, “Why don’t you come back with me to the cafeteria and you and Uruha can come sit at my table?”
Aoi’s eyes widened with surprise at Reita’s offer. They quickly narrowed with suspicion, though. “What’s your game, Suzuki?”
“No game,” Reita answered with a smile. “I just want to make everyone happy.”
------------------------------
“Holy…. Shit…” Ruki whispered as Reita stopped at their table with Aoi right next to him.
“I hope it’s okay that I brought someone to sit with us,” Reita said with a smile. His friends were too stunned to speak, so Reita continued with introductions. “Shiroyama Aoi, these are my friends Uke Kai and Matsumoto Ruki.” Ruki and Kai smiled nervously at Aoi as they bowed and, as odd as it might have seemed, Aoi looked just as nervous.
“Please don’t bite each other! I’ll be right back,” Reita said once he had seen that Aoi sat down with plans to stay. He turned and walked over towards Uruha, whom he could tell had been watching the scene in confusion.
As soon as Reita had approached him, Uruha asked, “I-is everything okay, Reita?”
“Wonderful, actually! The only thing that could make it any better would be you joining me for lunch,” Reita answered with a wink. Blushing, as usual, Uruha nodded happily. He gathered his lunch and followed Reita over towards his lunch table. Uruha had barely set his lunch on the table when Ruki said to him, “Oi, Takashima-senpai. Your boy here thinks he’s funny, calling me short…”
“Aoi!” Uruha scolded as he sat next to his friend.
“What?! He is! Some people are just born that way!” Aoi replied indignantly.
Uruha sighed as he rolled his eyes and said, “Be nice for once, would you?!”
------------------------------
As soon as he’d greeted his mom, Reita all but ran straight to his room when he got home. He threw his bag on the floor and said, “Lorenzo!”
“Rambo!” Lorenzo exclaimed with equal enthusiasm as he floated over to Reita. He couldn’t help it; Reita started to bounce up and down with excitement. Lorenzo also did the fairy version of bouncing up and down excitedly, which was basically floating up and down excitedly.
“I did it! I did it!” Reita exclaimed.
“Yay!” Lorenzo said, waving his arms in the air. After a few seconds of excited celebration, they both stopped their jumping and Lorenzo said, “What are we happy about again?
Punching the air with his fist, Reita held his arm up in a victorious stance as he exclaimed, “I ended the Reita-Aoi battle!”
Smiling proudly at Reita, Lorenzo said, “You did. And I must say that I was quite impressed with the way you handled it, Rambo. Good work.” Reita smiled at Lorenzo’s praise and then sat down in his desk chair. Floating over to Reita’s bed and getting comfortable again, Lorenzo added, “It would have been very easy to just punch your angry friend in the face…”
Reita shrugged and nodded his head. “I know that… but, even if you and I are the only ones who know it, Aoi’s still my friend. He might be annoying… and he might hate me… but I care about him.”
Lorenzo smiled fondly at Reita. “You’re a good friend.”
------------------------------
Reita woke up the next morning and he could feel it; today would be a good day. After consulting his advising staff (which was the fancy way of saying he asked Lorenzo a question,) Reita decided today would be the day he asked Uruha out. And what reason did he have not to follow through? He had sorted out his differences with Aoi and it had been determined that Uruha liked Reita (although Uruha hadn’t said so himself.) Today was a great day to ask Uruha out.
So when Reita arrived at his first class with Kai, he told his friend to go in without him; he had business to attend to. Of course that business involved Uruha, which is why Reita waved him over to talk. Uruha smiled and this time he walked over towards Reita with a bit more confidence in his step. Reita stepped away from the door of the classroom. Uruha followed suit, smiling adorably at Reita as he asked, “Did you need something?”
And then Reita’s nerves set in. Maybe it was the way Uruha blushed slightly while biting his full bottom lip as he waited for whatever Reita might say that had Reita’s palms sweating. Or it could have just been that this was finally when he would ask Uruha out. This was, after all, a huge step. His intentions for Uruha would be clear once he asked him out. The only way he could fix his wrongdoings would be if Uruha accepted him romantically. Obviously that requires Uruha to be okay with dating him. Sure, it seemed to be that Uruha liked Reita in that way, but a guy can still freak out about asking someone out on a date. Especially if that someone is the love of your life-transformed into a teenager after you screwed up your relationship with him by being a thickheaded jerk.
“Reita?” Uruha softly asked, knocking Reita out of his intense state of thought.
Chuckling nervously, Reita said, “Uruha, I need to ask you a question…”
Frowning as his brow furrowed with concern, Uruha asked, “Is s-something wrong Reita?”
Reita took a deep breath, exhaling before he said, “Uruha… how would you feel if I told you there was someone who liked you… in that way?”
As expected, Uruha blushed and started to fiddle with his hands nervously. “I-I… I guess it w-would make me happy to know s-someone liked me like that…”
Reita nodded slowly and then asked, “How would you feel if I told you that person wanted to… go on a date with you?”
Blushing a little deeper and fiddling with his hands a little more, Uruha responded, “W-well… I guess I w-would feel happy ab-about it, if it were someone I l-liked, too…”
Reita nodded slowly again and he paused his question asking for a few seconds. When he decided to speak again, Reita stared at the floor as he asked quietly, “How would you feel if I told you that someone was me?” Slowly and unsurely, Reita looked up at Uruha to see his reaction. He couldn’t help but to smile as he saw Uruha’s wide-eyed and extremely flushed facial expression. A minute passed when Reita said, “Uruha, don’t make me so nervous! Can you at least say something?”
Uruha inhaled sharply and then shook his head a little to try and rid himself of his state of shock. “D-did you just…”-he pointed a finger at himself-“…w-with me?”
Reita laughed adoringly as Uruha stumbled over his words. He nodded and answered, “If you’re asking if I asked to go on a date with you, then yes I did.” Uruha gasped. Scratching the back of his neck, a little nervous that Uruha hadn’t agreed yet, Reita mumbled, “We don’t have to go anywhere fancy… It can just be at my house if that’s more comfortable for you…”
“I’dloveto!” Uruha answered quickly, causing Reita to jerk his head up and look at him in surprise.
“Really?!” Reita asked, smiling widely. Uruha nodded with great enthusiasm as he blushed brightly and grinned at Reita.
“Is… is Friday okay?” Reita asked.
Uruha looked at Reita dreamily as he smiled. Speaking softly, Uruha said, "Friday sounds perfect."
