16 Tennessee

With only one exception, every time I've been to Tennessee I was driving through it. Actually, on each one of those trips I also drove through Kentucky, which to summarize included one trip from North Dakota to Florida in high school, 2 trips from Cleveland to New Orleans in college and one trip from Atlanta to Seattle.

That's a lot of driving, with relatively little stopping. Oh sure, I've passed some interesting places. For example, I've gone past Lynchburg and the Jack Daniel's distillery four times; each of them at roughly 3 in the morning. I've driven through Nashville. I've driven through Chattanooga. But I haven't actually DONE anything in any of these places.

Tennessee is saved from partial credit status by the one exception I alluded to. My fraternity brother and one-time radio co-host Dr. Bovi's wedding was in the northern Mississippi hometown of his wife Christy. The easiest was to get there was a flight into Memphis, and after the wedding we bummed around the city for a day. We had BBQ on Beale Street and checked out the Rock & Soul Museum, which is what the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame should have been. Alas, we did not have time to go to Graceland, Sun Studios, the Stax Museum, or the Gibson Guitar Factory. We also didn't to see Memphis Redbirds game, which is a shame because they play in what may be the nicest minor league park in existence. Fortunately my friend stephywang lives there with her husband, so I have a built-in excuse to check the city out again some day.

I also wouldn't going to Nashville; given the music scene there I'm sure I could find something to do. And Chattanooga has The Tennessee Aquarium and is a nice easy drive from my sister in Atlanta. So I expect I'll make it back to Tennessee one day.
