It's been more than a week.
In three days, Jin would be crowned King.
But he wasn't happy.
I do love you Jin. I'm sorry.
Those words still haunt him till today. But he refused to acknowledge it. He refused to think about Kazuya. A Whisperer had no right to his love.
After all a Whisperer had killed Xenon, his friend who he had treated almost like his father.
Being the crown prince was a lonely life. It meant he was trapped inside the palace and treated delicately. He must always appear impeccably regal. He must walk, talk, sit and even eat right. He had several instructors to make sure that he will grow up to be an excellent man - worthy of being royalty, worthy of being an an Akanishi.
Because of his title, he didn't have friends to talk to except when royal children from other kingdoms visit. Even then, those visits were never long enough. Of course, eventually he had Kazuya's visits in his dreams but it's not like he could sleep forever.
He tried making friends with the servants but they were too guarded around him - scared of being scolded by the King and Queen or wary of the big gap between them and him.
Xenon was different. When he first arrived to tend to the horses, Jin had kept his distance like the snob prince that he was. But Xenon had reached out to him, sharing stories and jokes. He treated Jin like his own son and for once Jin felt what it was to be a normal boy. Xenon had always reminded him that he was still a child. To him, Jin was a son to cherish.
That was why when Xenon and his wife was found dead in their house, their children missing and assumed to be dead as well, it had hit Jin hard.
The people said that Xenon and his wife could barely be recognized because they were beaten up so badly. They were bathing on their own blood.
Witnesses had seen a female in their house, blood on her hands and on her dress. They knew she was a Whisperer because of the green light that glowed around her.
The people caught the Whisperer and she was put to trial. She offered no explanation and bore her death sentence in silence. Jin had never seen her face because he couldn't stand to see the one who robbed him of a genuine friend.
Ever since then, Jin had hated Whisperers and had even led the hunt to more of them. He believed that no one should ever suffer like Xenon in the hands of those monsters. But they were hard to find because of their human traits and if Jin accidentally killed a human because of his recklessness, he would be even worst than those Whisperers. So he stopped the hunt though the anger at the injustice done to Xenon and his family still burned in his heart.
But even knowing all that, Jin couldn't fight the guilt that was eating him up every time he remembered Kazuya's sad eyes, the resignation in them. It was as if Kazuya had already accepted everything that was happening, like he knew from the start that he would be abandoned.
It didn't help that even the most insignificant things reminded him of Kazuya.
Every time he would pass the room Kazuya used to occupy, his steps would falter and slow down. He would walk towards the door and then he would run away from the room once he realized what he was doing.
He had also ceased to ride Eragon because the stallion reminded him of when Kazuya first told him he loves him.
He would catch himself gazing at the pearl necklace Kazuya had left behind in the confusion that issued. So he had locked that necklace in a jewelry chest.
Worst of all were the nightmares. He could do nothing to prevent them and every night after Kazuya was captured, he dreams of disturbing images. Most of them involved Kazuya.
"P-please...don't kill me. He won't...survive if-"
A pained scream. And then laughter coming from dark silhouettes.
And then total silence.
"Would you like to talk about it?"
He saw the Queen standing beside him, in the garden that she owned.
He didn't even notice her approach because he was deep in thought. It was times like this that he thinks his ability to remember dreams vividly is a curse.
He shook his head at his mother's question and lied down on his back and looked at the sky.
"Why is it so hard for you to trust that Kazuya is a good person?" The Queen asked again.
"He's a Whisperer, mother!"
It was his mother's turn to shake her head. "He's also the one who kept you company in your dreams, the one who held your hand when you fell asleep, the one who never pushed you away no matter how annoyingly clingy you become." She sat down beside him. On normal circumstances, it would have been an outrage for the Queen to simply sit on the grass like that. That time, however, she was simply being a mother and not a Queen. "Besides, if we follow your logic, Kazuya has just the same right to hate you because you're royalty, a direct descendant from the line of people who had always killed Whisperers. But he never blamed you, did he?"
"W-why are you defending him?" Jin was feeling the guilt and pain of loosing Kazuya increase ten-fold with his mother's words.
"Because I'm tired of seeing you so lifeless, pretending you don't care when I know your heart yearns for him. And also because it's normal for a mother to be kind to a person who cured her son."
"What?!" He sat up. Did I hear it right? Kazuya cured me? How?
He didn't realized he said the words out loud until his mother answered him. "Yes. He cured you using the Kiss of Life, a power of Whisperers. He shared his life force to you, basically."
"Why didn't you tell me?" He was starting to get irritated. Why do people feel the need to always hide things from him?! He was no longer a child!
"Your father and I decided not to tell you because we wanted you to be sure of your feelings to Kazuya. We wanted to make sure you really love him and not just being indebted to him."
He closed his eyes as he absorbed what his mother told him.
And just like that, he could see Kazuya's beautiful face, smiling at him, eyes full of love.
"By the way there's someone you really need to listen to. It'll clear all your doubts, I'm sure," the Queen said and stood up.
He followed his mother with his head still in turmoil.
They reached the throne room where his father was already seated on his throne. In front of him were two children kneeling respectfully.
Jin recognized them as the siblings Kazuya had helped before he was captured.
"You've seen sense, I see?" The King said to Jin and then smiled at the Queen who sat on her throne beside the King.
Jin simply nodded and took his place by the King and Queen.
"Child, tell him what you have told me," the King commanded.
The older sister looked up to them. "Our father's name was Xenon Khan. He was a horse caretaker here."
Jin's eyes widened. Xenon's children were alive?
"I was just 6 years old when our parents were killed. My brother Ruki was only a few weeks old."
Jin cringed. He didn't want to hear this part. But he felt like he needed to. This was important.
"We don't know the man who killed our father-"
"Man? Wasn't the Whisperer captured a woman?" Jin interrupted, confused.
"No, your highness! That woman was innocent! She saved us!"
"What?!" Jin was very confused now.
"That woman saw what was happening by chance. But it was already too late by then. Our parents have already been killed. Their murderer wanted to kill us too but the woman ran inside to save us. The murderer fought her but he didn't stand a chance. The woman kicked him out of the house. When she turned to us, she was crying."
"You poor children shouldn't stay here anymore. This scene will just haunt you for the rest of your life. You should be with someone who will take care of you."
"She told me an address, told me to bring my brother and never look back. She also told us that someday someone will save us the way she did. The next time I heard about her, it was about her death. I was saddened but I didn't say anything because she told me never to talk of that night again."
"Why did you bring it up now then?" the Queen asked.
"Because-"
"The Whisperer's in danger!" the younger sibling interrupted.
"Ruki!" the older sister scolded. "I'm sorry for my brother's rudeness, your highness."
"It's alright. Go on child," the Queen coaxed.
"Our friend in Lord Ryo's house saw the Whisperer. He's...not treated well there," the girl said, praising her words carefully.
"He's got bruises and wounds! They're hurting him over and over again!" Her brother interrupted again.
Jin felt the blood drain his face at the very thought of Kazuya, his angelic Kazuya, going through pain everyday for the past week.
It was at that moment that he felt the consequences of his wrong judgement.
What have I done?!
--------------------
Jin felt like crying the moment he saw Kazuya. He was thinner and his pale skin was filled with black and blue bruises. He also had cuts on his arms and legs and his wrists and ankles had red rope marks on them.
He couldn't even stand on his own feet if not for Yamapi who was holding him.
Jin stepped closer to the two but Yamapi's hate-filled glare stopped him because he knew he deserved it.
For the past few days, Yamapi had repeatedly begged him to help Kazuya but he remained deaf to him.
"Stay away from him," Yamapi practically spat. Then he turned to Kazuya as if he was called. Kazuya probably did.
"No, Kazuya! We are leaving this place! I'll find you someone who will take care of you better, someone who won't abandon you for selfish reasons." He glared at Jin again.
Every fiber of his being protested at the mere thought of Kazuya with someone else. That 'someone else' holding Kazuya's hand, hugging him, kissing him.
"No! I forbid you to leave!" He declared. He would do anything and everything to earn Kazuya's trust again. He would grovel and beg if Kazuya asked him to. But he couldn't allow him to leave.
"How dare you-" Yamapi ranted but Jin stopped paying attention to him the moment Kazuya talked in his mind.
I'm sorry, Jin. I'm so sorry.
Every word that Kazuya projected to him was like a stab to his heart.
Here Kazuya was, terribly wounded and yet he was the one saying sorry.
None of these is your fault, Kazu. Don't you ever think that you did something wrong. You never did. You're wonderful and perfect and I'm an idiot for abandoning you.
He moved closer to Kazuya and this time Yamapi couldn't do anything when he gathered Kazuya in his arms.
Kazuya flinched and Jin's tears fell. How much did Kazuya had to suffer under Lord Ryo's hands that he wasn't comfortable with a simple touch?
Speaking of Lord Ryo, the moment Jin became King, he would take away Lord Ryo's title. The bastard deserves that and more.
"I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry," he sobbed on Kazuya's neck. "I'll take better care of you, I promise. I won't let anyone lay a hand on you ever again!"
Yamapi scoffed. "You better! Kazuya lost more energy because he was protecting you!"
"Pi..." Kazuya warned.
His voice was hoarse, tired and once again Jin felt like kicking himself.
"What? It's the truth. If you weren't trying to prevent this stupid prince from physically feeling your pain, you wouldn't have been so weak and vulnerable."
"What is he talking about, Kazuya?" He pulled slightly away from Kazuya to see his face. "Kazu?"
Kazuya refused to meet his eyes.
"The binding, you-" Yamapi began but their conversation halted because Kazuya fainted.
Jin carried him in his arms and brought him to his room.
"Now about that binding..." Jin prodded Yamapi after gently laying Kazuya on the bed.
Yamapi had calmed down a bit but his voice still held coldness and contempt as he spoke. "The moment he gave you the kiss of life, you were connected to each other in a way. It makes you share his experiences. If he's hurt, you go through it too. Apparently, he knows how to prevent that. Only, the pain doubles for him."
Jin gaped. He remembered Kazuya's sickness before. "The days after I was cured... It was because of me that Kazuya was sick?"
"Yes. He healed much faster than you though because Whisperers are generally not affected by human sickness." Yamapi sighed. "Look Prince Jin, I don't trust you anymore but strangely Kazuya still does and I always respect his decision. You won't be getting anymore information from me, though. It's Kazuya's right to decide whether or not to tell you everything. That is, if he trusts you that much."
A soft thud was heard as the door opened and closed.
Jin knew Yamapi had already left. But his words still lingered in the air.
Does Kazuya still trust him enough? Even after all he went through because of him?
He was afraid to know the answer.
