It was September 17th, the sky was a cloudless blue and the trees were starting to lose their leaves. The streets of Oakdale were silent and the willows were weeping softly because Luke Snyder had just lost the man he loved.

Nearly everyone had heard about Reid’s accident and Luke’s phone had beeped non- stop for hours with messages of condolences, but Luke read none of them, heard none of them. He hardly registered anyone.

Reid Oliver was dead.

Luke‘s whole life destroyed.

Stolen. Gone.

Chris was still in the ICU getting help from John Dixon about his condition and he knew that he was running out of time. Luke was in charge of Reid’s final affairs, and he knew that Reid was saving Chris‘ life; he needed a new heart, so Reid had told Luke for them to give him his.

It broke Luke apart.

The ambulance crew had tried to get Reid to the hospital in time but it was too late; his injuries were too severe and Reid had lost his life.

The world was like a tomb to Luke as he sat by Reid’s graveside, staring at those words - Reid Oliver 1980 - 2010, what had seemed like days. Everyone in town was saddened by what had happened. Chris had blamed himself most of all, saying that if he had never sent Reid to Bay City, then none of this would have happened. After Chris had got back on his feet and was well again, as well as could be expected, he knew he had to see Luke and had gone to Reid’s grave, knowing that Luke would be there.

Luke still sat there; he had put flowers down and was running his fingertips along the edge of the white tombstone as he told Reid how much he loved him. Walking slowly, Chris came up the path and he could see that Luke had been crying. Luke was so lost in his sadness that he jumped when he spotted Chris and he turned to him sharply.

“Chris, I don’t want you here. Please, just go away”

Chris ignored him and had started rambling telling Luke how sorry he was about what happened and he didn’t mean for any of it to happen.

Luke got extremely upset and physically pushed Chris away from Reid’s grave, crying and yelling at him about how Reid wanted to help him so much and Luke thrown that help back in his face. He told him that he and Reid had been making plans for the future, a future that was now gone. Thanks to HIM. Chris tried to hold onto Luke while he was yelling and crying but Luke kept on pushing Chris away from him.

Worrying that his son was spending too much time at the grave and making himself ill, Holden had gone to find Luke. When he had arrived, he blinked as he saw what was going on. Moving quickly, he dragged the blonde off of Chris’ body and held him in his arms as he cried.

“It’s okay” he tried to soothe, but it was as though Luke hadn’t heard him.

“Why did this have to happen?” he cried, over and over.

Holden turned to Chris, telling him that it would be better if he left; Chris nodded and left father and son alone together.

“Why did it have to be someone I loved Dad? Did I do something to deserve this? Haven’t I gone through enough?” Luke asked his father.

“You don’t deserve this Luke! I wish I knew how to make it better, I really do.” Holden replied.

Holden wanted to take Luke home and after his son had calmed down a little they were able to leave. Once Holden got Luke back to Lily’s place, Luke without talking or even looking at Lily or Faith in the living room, went straight up to his room and slammed the door. He fell onto his bed and let himself cry.

There was a picture of him and Reid on his night stand; a photo they took on one of their dates, they were both smiling and having a good day date out. On Luke’s desk there was another photo of him and Reid together, this time Reid was giving Luke a kiss on the cheek, with Luke smiling.

Lily was downstairs with Faith and Holden. Holden told Lily he had again found Luke at Reid’s grave, but this time he was with Chris. Lily was shocked.

“I can’t believe he had the guts to show up there after everything that happened”

“I think Chris meant good intentions”

“Good intentions or not, Chris shouldn’t be there after what happened”

“Mom! What if Chris wanted to tell Luke how sorry he was, this can’t be easy for Chris too” Faith said.

“I don’t care! My son has lost the man he loves in place of Chris; I don’t know how Chris can fix this”

“Lily! Chris can’t fix this, but what Chris can do is show Luke how much he respects Reid for his sacrifice”

“I don’t care! Chris is a walking reminder of what my baby lost” Lily argued.

“I know! But I was there, Chris is hurting too!”

“I agree! All around town when Chris is around, everyone looks at him” Faith tried to reason.

“Good, he should feel shame!”

“Lily this is not Chris’s fault” Holden persisted.

“Like hell it isn’t, if Chris didn’t tell Reid about the heart waiting in Bay City nothing would have happened”

“Chris didn’t know what was going to happen there was no way of knowing it!”

“Chris should have called John; he is the heart doctor not Reid!”

“I know! But Reid was helping him, no one saw this coming”

Back in Luke’s room Ethan came through the door and jumped on Luke’s bed, he leaned over the blonde and shook him.

“Luke! You sleeping?” he asked.

“Go away Ethan!” he said quietly.

“Luke play with me”

“Go away Ethan!”

Ethan gets up and shakes Luke harder this time to get his attention.

“GO AWAY ETHAN!” Luke snapped at his brother.

Ethan began to feel scared; he had never seen his brother acting like this before and he turned to run out of the door, tears running down his face.

Luke suddenly felt guilty for making his little brother cry. “ETHAN! Man! This…FUCK!”

Ethan peers around the door, he was still crying but Lily came around the corner at that moment to pick him up.
“Why are you crying, sweetie?”

“Luke yelled at me!” he said, wiping the tears from his face

“Oh sweetie Luke didn’t mean it!” she tried to soothe.

“Luke is just extremely upset right now, that’s all”

“Hey Ethan, I will play with you! We could play Candy Land!” Faith said from her spot on the stairs.

Ethan gave a small smile and began to feel better and Faith took him back to his room to play the game.

Lily and Holden felt completely lost in how to help their son.
