2 years later, Hokkaido
“Masaki, baby!” Sho shouted as he stomped down the stairs in their small house. “Haven’t you seen my notes? I have to finish my article! Today’s the deadline!”
The younger man appeared next to him with a bunch of papers, handing them to his boyfriend.
“These were on the table in the living room” he said with a knowing smile. “The exact same spot where you left them last night…”
Sho returned his beloved’s smile as he took the papers from him and kissed his lips.
“Thank you! What would I do without you?” he asked rhetorically and grinned wide.
“You’d be dead already…” Masaki said with a serious face and handed a nicely wrapped bento box to Sho. “But I’m happy to be here and take care of you…” he added with a bright smile.
“You can’t even imagine how happy I am!” Sho replied then kissed Masaki once more. “I’m going now…”
“Take care!” Masaki said. “And don’t be late tonight! You know we have guests!” he shouted after him then returned to the house to get ready for university. He had only a few months left till graduation from Sapporo University…
After Shuntaro-san disowned them they stayed in Tokyo less than a month to settle their things. Ohno was kind enough to let them use this small apartment and moved back to his parents for the time being.
They wanted to start anew and they knew that they could go to one place only where they’ll be able to do it. So during their remaining time in the capital they settled their transfer to Sapporo University. They also went to the registry office and requested that both of them being removed from the Sakurai family register and moved into their mother’s parents’ register so they won’t share name anymore…
Masaki was stepping out their house as he reached this point in his memories. A smile bloomed on his face as he looked at the name tag next to the door saying ‘Suzuki Sho & Kazama Masaki’ The smile on the young man’s face grew wider like it did every time he saw the sign…
“That’s one nice house you have here,… Suzuki-kun…”
Hearing the snarky comment, Masaki dropped whatever he had in his hands - which were a knife and a potato since he was preparing dinner at that moment - and ran to the door where Sho was just letting their guests in.
“Nino-chan!” he shrieked and pulled his best friend into a bore-crushing hug. “I missed you!... All of you!” he said letting go the shorter man and moved to hug Ohno, Jun and Toma as well.
“We missed you too, Ma-chan” Ohno said grinning as he returned his hug.
“Yeah, yeah, now let him go, you’re my boyfriend if you would’ve forgotten it… And someone might want to kill you for hugging other’s property for too long…” Nino commented smirking and pulled his lover away.
“Hey! I’m none’s property!” Masaki mock-complained and everyone started laugh when he didn’t even budge to protest as Sho put a protective - or rather possessive - arm around his boyfriend.
“From where I’m standing, you do look like being someone’s property…” Toma said teasing and grinned at Masaki who blushed a little at that.
“Toma!” Jun snapped at his boyfriend for still pushing the topic and embarrassing their friend.
“Come on, I show you to your rooms then I finish dinner and we can catch up during eating…” Masaki said leading their friends to the upper floor.
“You live here… what, two years already and we got invited just now?... I’m hurt…” Nino said mock-complaining.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever you say, Ninomiya” Sho said rolling his eyes but a smirk was tugging at the corner of his lips.
“See you soon, Nino-chan!” Masaki singsonged and closed the door into his friend’s face. “Matsujun, you and Toma-chan can have the room next door. If you need anything, I’ll be down in the kitchen…” he told them before left with Sho in toe…
During dinner the young men filled in each other how their life was going nowadays. How Jun and Toma were preparing to open their boutique; or how Nino got a job at the company that was making all the top selling video games in the past few years; or how Ohno will have his first exhibition next spring; or how Sho became a reporter at the local newspaper…
“I just remembered… was that really a goat I saw in your garden?” Jun asked raising an eyebrow.
“Oh, that’s Gacchan. I assisted to his birth when I was here on internship for the first time and Shimura-san gave him to me when we came here with Sho-chan…” Masaki told with a proud smile on his face.
“You know, peopled usually keep dogs or cats, not a goat as a pet…” Nino commented.
“Well, we’re special, aren’t we, Masaki?” Sho asked and squeezed his lover’s hand with a smile. ‘We were strangers, brothers, enemies, lovers to each other… It was way too long till we could reach here…’ he thought as he looked at his boyfriend and he knew Masaki was thinking the same thing as the younger man nodded beaming with love. The others around the table just smiled softly and silently at the scene. Even Nino kept his snarky comments to himself…
After dinner the guest were sent to the living room with some beers and snacks while Sho and Masaki cleaned up. The younger man already stood at the sink starting doing the dishes while newspaper reporter finished cleaning the table. The older man stood in the middle of the kitchen and watched as Masaki was humming for himself and swaying his hips slightly to it. He couldn’t help but smile widely at this, enjoying the peaceful happiness that filled not just tonight but their every day in the past two years. He hoped and wished for this would never change…
“Masaki! Marry me!...”
The sentence left his mouth before he could stop it.
Masaki turned around hearing his name but immediately froze at Sho’s words, staring at him with wide eyes, his mouth hanging open partly and soapy water dripping from his hands, wetting the floor around him. Sho stared back at him a bit surprised but mostly embarrassed.
“I… I mean… I didn’t mean to ask you like this… Like… out of a blue with a bunch of dirty dishes in my hands…” he said looking down on the said dishes then quickly putting them on the counter. “I have the ring already and I wanted to take out for a nice, romantic dinner with candles and flowers… And I still will do that!... And of course I asked mom’s permission when she was here last month!...” Sho said quickly, panicking that he might have ruined everything, concluding from the lack of answer from his lover. “But… if you don’t…” he added obviously dejected.
“Yeah!”
“Yeah?...” Sho asked back blinking, not daring to believe his ears first.
“Yes!” Masaki repeated and jumped on Sho, closing his arms around his neck, hugging him tightly. “Yes, I’ll marry you!”
The older man encircled his slim waist with his muscular arms, pulling Masaki even closer, a happy smile forming on his lips.
“Aww! It’s so sweet!”
The couple pulled apart a bit, turning their heads toward the door where their friends were peeping on them.
“I told you to keep your mouth shut!” Jun hissed at his boyfriend.
“But it was so sweet! And romantic!” Toma squealed delighted.
“How can it happen that they’re getting married before us? We’re dating longer than them!” Nino complained. “Though, knowing you, you’d just kidnap me and before I could say or do anything, I’d be bounded to you for ever…”
“And you’d love every minute of that” Ohno said smugly and kissed into Nino’s neck. “You’re not the romantic type like Ma-chan anyway…”
“You’re still a big bully…” Nino retorted and pouted.
“And you still love me for it” Ohno said grinning.
“If you’re finished with this whole weird, lovey-dovey act of yours…” Jun cut in before Nino could say something more. “Congratulations, Ma-chan, senpai…!” he said looking back at the newly engaged couple.
The others grinned and joined the congratulations.
Masaki beamed back at his friends as he leant his head on Sho’s shoulder, hiding his face in his boyfriend’s - no, fiancé’s… - neck. The proposal might not gone the way Sho planed and wanted but he was still happy Sho did it at all, and that he could share this moment with those who were closest to him next to his mother…
“Come on, I think we have some celebrating to do!” Nino said grinning and the four guests from Tokyo headed back to the living room where their drinks were left…
When they were alone again, Masaki looked up at Sho.
“I love you…” he said with a happy but wavering smile and slightly teary eyes.
“I know. I love you too and I’ll never leave you from now on. Cause you’re my love, my life, my everything. You’re the better part of me. I’ll do anything in my power to make you happy for the rest of our lives…” the older man said seriously cupping Masaki’s face in his palm.
The younger man blinked back his tears.
“It was almost like a marriage vow…” he whispered with a smile.
“And I meant every word of it…”
“Good. Cause I take you on your word. You’re stuck with me with the rest of your life…” Masaki grinned and pulled Sho in for a kiss to seal their brand new start…
