“Taking another break?” Lowe asks as I enter the trailer. I close the door behind me, deliberately, carefully, making sure every ounce of that Arizona heat is left beyond the doors.

Week 3 Entry for brigits_flame. Prompt: "Truth."
So this is technically part of a short story... and I wrestled with the idea of explaining the characters, the situation, etc, etc... and found it not only too painstaking, but it just sounded bad. So, I apologize if this is confusing, and you can make of it what you will. I hope you like this piece, anyway, and good luck, everyone!

I drink coffee with vanilla creamer and pretend it’s a luxury I couldn’t live without. I pretend it’s a drug. Laced with alcohol. LSD. Ecstasy. All the things I wish it could be.

She was a thousand times
more a poet
than you.
She had syllables
filling heart chambers
metaphors
fused
to cardiac tissue
She had rhythm
from atrium
to ventricle
She had twilight
in deep hollow lungs
constellations
contained by breath
and bone
Alveoli
shuddering
wondering
at each inhale
what would come
next.

I lost the race years ago.
Or maybe… maybe there never really was a finish line.

I realize I am not built
like a bomb.
There is no digital countdown, seconds sliding by in red lights, no hardwired detonation sequence. No ticking, and no fuse. No rag to ignite like a Molotov cocktail. No terrible center awaiting a push of the trigger, no tripwire, no gunpowder.

Yep. I knew it. I'm unable to write fluffy, happy things.
I even tried, but I couldn't bear posting it, so... now for the opposite end of the spectrum--I got really bored one day and read too much Plath. :P
