Chapter 14: A Proposal and A Punishment

Jin bit his lip nervously.

"I don't have to be Kazuya to know that you're nearly having a panic attack."

He glared at Koki. "You know if I didn't need your help, I would kick you out of the palace right now."

"Tough. You do need me."

Jin mock-shivered. "That sounded dirty, Koki. However if Kazuya was the one who said that..."

Koki chuckled. "Now who's being dirty? Really, you're lucky the rest of the Kingdom can't hear you now." He sipped from the tea he was drinking. "That aside, were you able to do the task you needed to do for the grand marriage proposal for Kazuya?"

"I did but I'm not too sure it's gonna work. I'm not even sure if they heard me."

The task Koki was talking about was Jin's idea to ask the magical creatures to come during the marriage proposal.

"I guess we'll know later if they heard you or not. But frankly Jin I don't understand why you're so jittery about all of this. I mean, he already said he'll stay with you and the kids right?"

"Staying here and marrying me are two very different things. Besides, I just want Kazuya to be happy. This isn't just about me."

"Right. Well, I'll hurry along and make sure everything's in order for the main event tonight. Good luck loverboy." Koki put down the cup he was holding and left Jin.

"Luck. Yes, I'm going to need heaps of luck." He looked outside the window and stared at the bright blue sky. "Please, please let them be here later."

"Hello? Magical creatures? Um, I don't know if I'm doing this right. But Koki's sources said if there's any place you'll be able to hear me, it's here." Jin rubbed his neck. "I am King Jin, the leader of Azure and I know you probably all hate me and you have a reason to do so because obviously I have screwed things up more than once and- Okay look. I'm in love with Kazuya, maybe you know him. He's a Whisperer and I'm planning to propose to him tomorrow night at the Palace's main garden. It would mean so much to him, and to me as well, if you would be there. I will accept any punishment you want to give me but please come see Kazuya. He misses you."

He glanced one more time at the forest before pulling on Eragon's reign. They were going back at the palace.

"Daddy!" Little Ruki called Jin's attention. He asked the boy and Ami to call him 'Daddy' since he was going to be their father soon.

He lifted Ruki in his arms. "What is it Ruki?"

"Dizzy. I'm dizzy."

"What? Why? Are you sick?" Jin fussed over Ruki.

The boy giggled. "No. You're walking there and there." Ruki pointed to one point and another. "It's making me dizzy."

Ami tried to muffle her laugh with her hand but Jin still heard it.

"So you're laughing at the King huh young lady?" He wiggled his eyebrows to show that he was only playing around. Ami was still not that close to him like Ruki was. He didn't want to scare the poor girl more.

"You're so nervous, it's funny." Ami squealed when Jin caught and tickled her.

The two kids were laughing delightedly and Jin was chuckling when Kazuya arrived in the grand garden - the one nearest to the forest.

"I'm glad you're all getting along fine."

Jin felt the nervousness return to him full force.

"I can feel what you're feeling Jin," Kazuya stated. "Will you finally tell me why?"

This is it.

"Kazu...I love you so much. You know that, don't you?" He began.

"I do Jin. And I love you too. Just as much." Kazuya placed his palm on Jin's cheek tenderly. "What's bothering you, my King?"

Music started to play softly from an orchestra that was concealed earlier, courtesy of Koki who saluted Jin.

Yamapi also came, a wine glass on his hand. He raised his glass in acknowledgement. Well, Jin had been able to convince him that he deserved a second chance.

"King Jin, I don't care about titles so you being king doesn't impress me at all. All I care about is Kazuya and your actions caused him to be hurt. You abandoned my brother. What guarantee do I have that you won't hurt him again?"

"Nothing really. There's no guarantee about that. But what I can promise you is that I love Kazuya. More than my title, more than this kingdom, more than my life. Every decision that I will make from now on will be founded on that. I want to always see him smile. I want him to be happy."

"What's going on?" Kazuya asked, confused. The orchestra, Prince Koki, even Yamapi...

I thought Pi still hates Jin?

He gasped when Jin dropped on one knee.

"What are you doing Jin? Come on, get up. Your clothes will get dirty."

"It's okay, love." Jin smiled and held Kazuya's hand. "I know I hurt you before and I know I'm not the perfect man for you. I'm not the most intelligent or the strongest or the kindest. I'm not even the best king. You know sometimes I wonder why you chose me. But of all those imperfections, the only perfect thing in my life is the man standing here in front of me. You are perfect Kazuya."

"Jin..." Kazuya couldn't find the words to express just how incredibly touched he was by the things his lover was saying.

"I can't live without you, Kazu. And if you would allow me to, I would like to cherish and take care of you for the rest of my life." Jin pulled out a ring from his pocket. "Are you wiling to spend the rest of your life as Ami and Ruki's parent and as my partner? Will you marry me, Kazuya?"

Kazuya's tears fell. "Are you sure? The people of Azure would want a princess to be your bride - not a man like me. I'm a commoner Jin, a Whisperer at that."

"Oh for heaven's sake Kazuya! Just marry the man already!"

Little winged girls floated towards them.

Behind them, unicorns peeked shyly from the trees. Winged horses proudly spread their magnificent wings. A phoenix pearched on a tree, her fiery wings coming in contact with the leaves but not burning them.

"You came!" Jin exclaimed, relieved. He smiled at Kazuya. "Surprise!"

Kazuya stared at his magical friends, momentarily lost for words to stay.

"Wow!" Ruki and Ami said at the same time while the adults looked at the creatures in both amazement and fear.

"Oh Jin! Thank you! And yes, I'll marry you. Now get up. I can't hug you properly with you still kneeling down," Kazuya said once he finally got over his surprise.

Everyone laughed and just like that, the tension disappeared.

Jin stood up and slid the ring on Kazuya's finger.

Kazuya threw his hands around Jin's neck.

"Are they gonna kiss?" Ruki asked innocently to his sister.

"Yes so you shouldn't watch." Ami covered her brother's eyes.

"You're too young to watch that too young lady," Yamapi lectured before covering Ami's eyes.

Kazuya and Jin however, were only aware of each other and no one else. They looked at each others' eyes and then slowly, kazuya leaned in and gave Jin a long, passionate kiss.

"Woah!" Jin blurted out once their lips parted.

"Whew! It's getting a little too hot here, don't you think?" Koki joked, fanning himself. "I think it's time we leave these two lovers alone." He signaled for the orchestra and the kids to follow him back inside the palace then he dragged a grumbling Yamapi with him.

Jin grinned and wrapped his arm around Kazuya's waist. "Thank you for the help Koki," he said to his friend who just raised his hand in acknowledgement.

Once the other humans were gone, he looked at the magical creatures and though he had never done it before, he bowed low in full respect. "Thank you for coming."

"You said you are willing to accept punishment in exchange for our presence here?" A black winged horse with equally black wings said in a strong, clear voice.

Jin was surprised because he didn't know the winged horses can speak the human's language but he nodded nonetheless.

"Jin? You accepted punishment? You didn't have to do that!" Kazuya said, worried.

"It's okay, love. I'm willing to go through anything to make you happy. It's the least I can do to make it up to you for all the pain I caused," Jin said calmly.

"As long as we don't hurt you physically, Kazuya will be left unharmed. Well then, mental punishment it is. Come near me, human," the winged horse spoke once again.

"No! Don't hurt him!" Kazuya tried to stop Jin but the unicorns blocked his way.

It's going to be alright Kazu. Jin's projected to Kazuya.

The fairies floated above Jin and chanted in small, indistinguishable voices.

Images started to flood Jin's mind. Horrifying scenes...unimaginable things. It was like having a nightmare when you're wide awake. Only this time, it's much more scary because Jin can't control his body. It's like he was forced to watch something he didn't want to see.

He felt his heart constrict painfully when he saw an image of Kazuya lying on the floor, blood pooling beneath his body, his eyes looking at Jin and the life slowly fading from those brown orbs.

Jin didn't realize he was crying if not for the strong arms that wrapped around him and brought him back to reality.

"Shh. It's alright love. I'm here, I'm here," Kazuya soothed Jin but he himself was crying.

Jin blinked and glanced at Kazuya. His lover was in his Whisperer form - blue light coiling around him -and Jin- protectively, his skin almost gleaming in it's fairness and his hair being swept away from his face by the wind.

He was the epitome of beauty.

"How dare you torture him like that," Kazuya snarled at the fairies.

"What we did was allow him to see his worst fears. Everything he saw was from his mind, we didn't put it there," one fairy said, flying down to a level with Jin's eyes. "What did you see?"

Kazuya snarled again but Jin touched his cheek affectionately.

"Calm down, love. Anger doesn't suit you." He glanced at the black winged horse before answering the fairy. "Let's just say I saw the one person who could make or break me."

The black winged horse trotted slowly towards the unlikely couple and to Jin's surprise, knelt down submissively before the King.

Everyone of the magical creatures followed suit.

"You have proved yourself worthy, human. I saw what you saw. It is not the loss of your kingdom or your title that scares you. It is the loss of Kazuya. You cherish him truly. And it is that love that will restore the old times. My name is Pegasus and I am very old and due to die soon but I am glad that before I leave, a King finally understands what it means to treasure and trust a magical creature. Me and my troop of winged horses pledge allegiance to you. You may call on us whenever you need help," the black winged horse - Pegasus - said solemnly.

"Count on us too!" A fairy said. "We may be small and not as powerful in magic as the Whisperers are, but if you need us we'll be there."

The unicorns and the phoenix nodded in silent agreement.

"Thank you. I promise I'll revive the times when humans and magical creatures co-existed peacefully," Jin said sincerely.

"I'll take your word for it," Pegasus said. "We must go now."

"Yes and you still have a lot to prepare now that you're engaged," one fairy reminded.

"Come visit us soon! You know where to find us," another fairy cheerfully added.

Jin and Kazuya watched as the magical creatures returned to the forest and disappeared one by one.

Kazuya glanced at Jin and then up to the sky. Maybe it will really be a dawn of the new era.
